Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is famous as the writer of the Sherlock Holmes stories. He was
born in Scotland in 1859 and as a young man attended Edinburgh University in order to
study medicine. He worked as a doctor for several years, but when he was thirty-two he
became a full-time writer.
He wrote romances, adventure stories, and historical novels, but it was his detective
stories which made him famous. He wrote his first detective story in 1887, while he was
still a doctor, and during the next twenty years he wrote fifty more.
Sherlock Holmes was his most famous character. A character who lived in Baker Street,
London with his friend and assistant Doctor Watson. Their enemy in many stories was a
man called Moriarty.
