Assessment plan
This unit is assessed through a number of forms of evidence, as follows:

To complete the final assessment, you must complete the following tasks as outlined in this assessment
booklet. Use this list to check that you have completed all tasks required.

place.

All assessments will ensure that the principles of assessment and rules of evidence are adhered to.

Assessment Task 1 – Short answer questions

You will be examined on the following questions and will have up to 60 minutes to write down your
answers. This is a closed book examination. To be assessed as competent for this assessment, you must
answer all questions correctly. If your assessor finds that you have not completed one or more questions
successfully, your assessor will discuss reassessment options with you. You may need to redo all or part
of the assessment.

Write down your answers on a separate page with all of the question numbers clearly marked.

Assessment 2: Develop and present research strategy


Part A: Develop and document research strategy

This assessment requires you to identify a human resource issue of your choice and initially plan and write
up a research strategy. Assessment Task 3 requires you to conduct and present the research. Ensure
you read through all of the assessment tasks before you commence your assessment.

Your research, including the strategy and conducting and presenting the research is to be based on a real
life business, Star Industries, provided to you by your assessor and will require you to review the
organisation’s strategic business plan that also reflects its human resources strategy. You will also be
provided with a range of reports that Star Industries has recently commissioned and that indicate the
human resources issues that the company is interested in. In addition correspondence relating to these
issues will also be provided to you.

Based on the review as described above, you will be required to identify a specific human resources issue
for research. Your assessor will discuss options with you noting that current human resources issues of
interest to Star Industries are performance management, industrial relations, human resources information
management system, remuneration and benefits, recruitment and selection, separation/termination,
work/life skills and rehabilitation.

Your research should have a specific objective and will need to address current practices and thinking, as
well as ethical requirements, in relation to the human resource issue you have identified.

Once you have conducted your research you will apply it in reviewing existing organisational human
resources policies and procedures, as well as ethical and confidentiality requirements and so during this
part of the assessment you will also be provided with relevant policies and procedures, as well as ethical
and confidentiality requirements of human resource personnel working in the area. You must also identify
associated relevant legislation, regulations and standards as your review will also including checking that
the policies and procedures comply with relevant legislation, regulations and standards.

A further aspect that should be included in the development of your research strategy is to identify any
sustainability issues that apply to your area of research and to consider these issues in your research.

You will be required to plan and document how you will conduct the research, for example, through
interviews, surveys, literature searches and statistical analysis, as well as all the information sources you
will use including workforce data sources such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). You will be
required to analyse all the information you gather in your research to establish key trends and critical
information.

You should also identify local, state or territory, national and international human resources networks for
human resources professionals and use these as a source of information for your research.
Your research should involve conducting at least one interview with one of the following personnel:

 experienced human resources practitioners


 training and development staff
 managers and team leaders
 industry experts or spokespersons.

You can conduct your interview over the phone or in person and you must develop a number of relevant
questions to ask the person you are interviewing (which you must also submit as part of this assessment).

Once you have decided on your research topic, strategy and information sources, you must write up your
planned strategy and present it to your assessor for feedback. This presentation also forms part of the
assessment.

The outcomes of this assessment are your planned research strategy and a presentation of the strategy to
your assessor (as if they are your manager).

You must also create a folder on a USB stick that is specific to the research you are conducting and save
your research strategy and all other documents that you develop for all assessment tasks under relevant
sub folders. You will be required to provide a screen shot of all of the folders that you have created
following completion of Assessment Task 3.

In summary, for this assessment, you must:

 Develop a research strategy document that is around 1000 words and that includes:
o An outline of human resources issue that you identified from the documents provided to
you including the Strategic Business Plan and human resources project reports and
correspondence from employees and your reasons for your choice.
o A list of the relevant Star Industries policies and procedures and ethical requirements
associated with the human resource issue.
o A list of legislation, standards and regulations that are addressed by the policies and
procedures and are relevant to the human resources issues identified for research.
o A list of any sustainability issues that apply.
o The objective/s of your research.
o A listing of the information sources that you will use to conduct the research including:
 Who you will interview and a list of at least 5 questions that you will use in your
interview.
 Which human resource networks you have identified and how you will use these
as sources of information.
 For the online research that you conduct, you must develop a list of key words and
phrases for searching and including Boolean operators.
 Sources of information that you will use to gather workforce data.
Your report must be typed up and be written in plain English and submitted to your assessor prior to Part B
of Assessment 1. Prior to submission you must proof read your research strategy document and edit as
required to ensure that it is accurate, clear and consistent.

Your assessment will be assessed against the criteria in Checklist A.

Part B: Present research strategy

You will be required to present your planned research to the assessor (as through they were a member of
staff) and summarising the key aspects of your planned research strategy. This will be in a form of a
discussion between you and your assessor and you should prepare a list of dot points that summarise key
aspects of your research strategy and to discuss with your assessor. You must also provide this to the
assessor as part of your assessment.

You should confirm your assessor’s understanding of your research strategy by asking relevant questions.
You should treat the presentation as though you are trying to gain a staff member’s support for the
research and strategy and so use persuasive and confident language. At the end of your presentation,
you and your assessor will discuss your planned strategy and your assessor will offer suggestions for
improvement if required and you will be required to ensure that when you carry out your research, you
implement the suggestions for improvement.

Assessment 3: Conduct and present research

This assessment requires to you to conduct your research using the research strategy you developed for
assessment A, as well as produce a research report. Your report should be typed up, written in plain
English and include all the required information as specified below.

The outcome of this assessment is a research report that reviews a human resource function within Star
Industries and recommends improvements to organisational policies and procedures and practices based
on the research conducted, as a well as a process for change.

As part of this assessment you will also be required to review the policies and procedures and ethical
requirements (such as codes of conduct) that you have identified. The research you conduct should
information your review and must include an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the policies and
procedures, as well as their overall appropriateness and relevance. It must also include a consideration of
the ethical behaviours and confidentiality requirements of human resource personnel working in the area
you are researching and a review of whether existing mechanisms for ensuring ethical requirements are
sufficient. You may need to identify additional behaviours that would be expected for working ethically in
the area you are researching.

As part of your analysis of the policies and procedures and ethical requirements, you must identify
associated relevant legislation, regulations and standards and check that the policies and procedures and
ethical requirements comply with relevant legislation, regulations and standards.

Your research should also involve an analysis of the workforce data that you have collected, including
emerging trends and critical issues.

Additionally based on the correspondence that you were provided with in relation to the human resources
issue that you chose to research, you should record all the correspondence into an Excel sheet
documenting who the correspondence is from, the issue stated, how it will be responded to and the
timelines. This will demonstrate your ability to record information as part of Star Industries human resource
information management. This should be included as an attachment to your research.

Based on your research, you must write and submit a research report that addresses the following:

 Objective/s of your research.


 A summary of the description of how you undertook the research and the information sources and
tools that you used (including the survey questions).
 A write up of the response to your interview questions (include this as an attachment).
 Analysis of the workforce data you collected, including emerging trends and critical issues. Your
report should include graphics such as charts, graphs or tables to demonstrate your analysis of the
data.
 Your research findings including current practices and thinking, as well as ethical requirements and
behaviours.
 An analysis of the strengths and/or weaknesses of the relevant Star Industries policies and
procedures in relation to the human resource issue that you researched.
 A description of the legislation, regulations and standards that apply to the human resource area of
research and the extent to which the relevant Star Industries policies and procedures address
relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
 A description of sustainability issues that apply to the human resource issue.
