In 54 206, what is the place value and value of the digit 2? _____
Yes. The place value of the digit 2 is hundreds and its value is
200.
How about the place value and value of the digit 5?
Great! The place value of the digit is ten thousands and its value is
100 000.
Try this.
Complete the table. Write the place value and value of the
underlined digit. The first one is done for you.
Number Place Value Value

24 508

Do you still remember what place value and value are?
Place value refers to the position of a digit in a number. Value tells
how much a digit represents in a number.

What’s New
4
What is it
Example 1:
Round 24 278 to the nearest thousands.
For this example, you can use your knowledge of place values to
find for the answer.
Let us follow the steps.
Step 1: Underline the digit in the indicated place value. Then
encircle the digit at the right of the underlined digit.
24 278
Step 2: Identify if the encircled digit is round up or round down.
5
Round up if the digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 6
You need to add 1 to the underlined digit 7
8
9
Since the encircled digit is 2, that is round down. Just copy the
underlined digit. It is still 4.
Step 3: Copy all the digits at the left of the underlined digits and
replace all the digits on the right with 0.
24 278 24 000
Therefore, 24 278 when rounded to the nearest thousand is 24
000.
Example 2:
Round 39 642 to the nearest ten thousands.
Step 1: Underline the digit 3 and encircle the digit 9
39 642 39 642
Step 2: Identify if round up or round down.
39 642
5
Since the encircled digit is 9 that is round up. You need to add 1
to the underlined digit which is 3. 3+1 = 4
Step 3: Copy all the digits at the left of the underlined digits and
replace all the digits on the right with 0.
39 642 40 000
Hence, 39 642 rounded to the nearest ten thousands is 40 000.

14
Just like in comparing numbers, start comparing the digits
from the highest place value, in this case, it is ten thousands.
The highest digit in ten thousands place is 9, followed by 5,
3, 2, and 1. Therefore, if we are going to arrange the numbers in
decreasing order that would be:
90 290 53 151 32 267 21 413 17 590
Given this order, we can say that Barangay Central has the
least population with 17 590 while Barangay Tandang Sora has
the biggest population with 90 290.
Example 3
Arrange the numbers in decreasing/ descending order.
24 512 23 525 23 414 26 414
Aside from using the place value chart, you may follow the
steps in ordering numbers.
Step 1. List the given numbers vertically. Align the digits in the
correct place value.
24 512
23 525
23 414
26 414
Step 2. Compare the digits in the highest place value.
24 512 26 414
23 525 24 512 All the digits in the ten thousands place
23 414 are the same. Proceed to the next place
26 414 value. The highest digit is 6, therefore 26
414 will be the first number. Followed by 4
in 24 512.
15
Hence, the correct arrangement of the numbers in decreasing
order is
26 414
24 512
23 525
23 414
What’s More
Activity 1
Arrange the following in increasing order.
1.
58 454 58 124 53 134 52 842
16
Arrange the following in decreasing order.
1. 25 322 23 117 23 177 23 384
_____________ ______________ _____________ ______________
When ordering numbers, you may use the place value chart
to compare the digits starting from the highest place value up to
the least.
We can also follow these steps in ordering numbers.
Step 1. List the given numbers vertically. Align the digits in the
correct place value.
Step 2. Compare the digits in the highest place value.
Step 3. Continue comparing the digits in the next place value.
There are two ways in ordering numbers – increasing or
ascending and decreasing or descending. Increasing or
ascending means arranging numbers from least to greatest.
While decreasing or descending means arranging numbers from
greatest to least.
