MY PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

As a teacher, providing a safe, comfortable classroom environment for student learning is

of the utmost importance. It is critical to have an engaging educational environment that includes

all students (Lynch). Maximizing student opportunities is one the most effective ways to conduct

successful classroom management.

In the classroom, students need to be in control by the teacher, but students are in control

of their own learning. This statement means that the teacher should provide the classroom rules

and act on these rules, but it is the students responsibility to oversee their own learning and if

they want to abide by the classroom rules. Giving students responsibility in the classroom is not

letting them take control but simply teaching them how to govern themselves in a learning

environment.

An educator should be a facilitator of their students learning. Facilitated learning is

predicated on the idea that students will perform better in a learning environment when they are

empowered to make their own decisions, respected as individuals, and trusted with personal

responsibility (Johnson). Teachers should create the basic rules in their classroom, such as phone

policies and/or classroom disruption. When creating rules for rewards or for classroom activities

students should be involved.

Giving students positive rewards for good behavior can encourage students to repeat the

same good behaviors. When a student receives positive feedback, they will continue to

demonstrate good behavior in the classroom that could potentially enlighten another classmate. It

develops positive habits and encourages the understanding of how their positive behaviors have

positive outcomes.

My philosophy of classroom management is more than just governing a classroom from

bad behavior and keeping students on task. Classroom management is also teaching your

students responsibility and how to be in control of their learning environment. Being an effective

teacher in the classroom requires being a facilitator of learning, giving students positive

feedback, and advance student opportunities to take leadership in their learning.
