Description: Field Manual for Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) training program. The CNA Field Manual is a
learning supplement to the classroom textbook (Hartman’s Nursing Assistant Care – The Basics © 2010
Hartman Publishing, Inc.) used in Greenfield Community College’s (GCC) 100-hour CNA-HHA-PCA six week
training program preparing participants for work as Certified Nurse Assistants, Home Health Aides and
Personal Care Attendants. The GCC CNA training program is operated as a partnership with the Tripp
Memorial Foundation, which provides instruction and curriculum design.

Why this curriculum material was developed: The CNA Field Manual was originally developed to provide a
learning aid for non-traditional students. GCC found that many of the students in its CNA training program are
recent immigrants with limited English as well as other students with low literacy and other learning barriers.
The CNA Field Manual was created as a series of handouts designed to make the classroom text more
accessible to these learners and to provide study guide materials for the key components of the curriculum
needed for CNA certification. The Field Manual also emphasizes the Tripp Memorial Foundation’s philosophy
of nursing care, aiming to prepare compassionate, knowledgeable and resilient workers for a challenging
health care occupation. DOL funding was used to revise, edit and update these materials and put them into an
easily reproducible format.

Author: The CNA Field Manual was created and revised by Sue Pratt, founder of Tripp Memorial Foundation
and Coordinator of the Nursing Assistant program at Greenfield Community College, with input and assistance
from the Tripp instructional team operating the CNA training program at GCC. The manual includes
copyrighted material reproduced under Fair Use with proper acknowledgment.
