Mario Monti Mario Monti was born in Varese, Italy in 1943.

He earned a degree in
economics and management from Bocconi University in 1965. He studied economics at Yale
University in 1968-1969. Then, from 2011-2013, he served as the Prime Minister of Italy. He
also served as a European Commissioner from 1995 to 2004, with responsibility for the internal
Market, Services, Customs and Taxation

European Commissioner means member of the 27 member European Commission. That each
member within the commission is led by the president of the European Commission. In simple
terms, they are the equivalent of national ministers. Mario has more influence than any elected
politician in Europe. In late February of 2002, Monti pushed the Chancellor to break down VW's
takeover defenses but, the chancellor resist.

Chancellor means a title of various official positions in the governments of many nations. It is
the person in-charge of financial and economic issues. Days later, Monti and his fellow
commissioners used the EU's national governments which are resisting Brussels' command to cut
state subsidies. On 2001, he found DaimlerChrysler guilty of price manipulations. Then, Monti
charged the car company for about $65 million as a punishment for not obeying rules or laws.
