1.0 Proposed Topic

“The Impact of Retrenchment That Influence the Performance of The Company in

Malaysia”

1.1 Background of the Study

An organization or a company played vital roles in this nowadays business

economy. Workers and employees usually depend on their financial income

from the company that they have been working in. This means most of our daily

lives are dependent on the company's performance. Therefore, successful

performances of the company represent a good quality of ingredients for

developing nations (Ahmed M, 2016). Based on the previous research it

mentions that the relationship between retrenchment and performance is mostly

a negative outcome. This is because the workers who remain in the company

are changing their work attitude that may lead to low performance in the

company (Sara A, 2020). In addition, there is also an increase in the workload

towards the remaining worker. Some of the workers cannot corporate with too

many workloads at a time. This action will cause failure efficiency of work. At

the end of the day it seems that between retrenchment and company

performance has significant influences towards each other. According to Lim N

(2019), in 2009 the highest percentage of unemployment workers in Malaysia

due to retrenchment was 3.69%.

Retrenchment means a termination of some employee due to some reason and

factor of the company. Nowadays, the rate of retrenchment is focusing more on

unemployment, which may lead to economic recession. A few factors that lead
to retrenchment are company restructuring, technology changes, mergers

business take over and many others. (Emmanuel L, Ellis A, Moses H, 2018).

Once the company had been retrenched, the company cannot expect for the

company performance to be more successful onwards after the retrenchment

had been implemented. There is no guarantee for the company performance to

be increased day by day (Tan Z, and Sue K, 2016). This is because Jerry F

(2017) conducted a study on the effect of retrenchment towards company

performance and it shows that the remaining staff cannot perform their job

effectively. At the end of the day, it may seriously affect the whole

organization's performance. Besides that, some companies implement revised

process strategy after the retrenchment. This action also will cost a lot of money

to the company to restructure the company back. Time consuming is also

relatable with this action.

In this study, we are going to look into the performance of the company

Malaysia. From this research overall, we will determine the impact of the

retrenchment or the effect of retrenchment that influence the performance of the

company. We will be focusing more on the impact of the retrenchment that

influences the performance of the company in Malaysia. This is because

numerous studies have been conducted in company retrenchment, but limited

had focused on identifying the impact of retrenchment that influences the

performance of the company. In addition, there is no empirical study that

focused specifically to show the relationship between the impact of

retrenchment and the company performance. Moreover, there are also limited
studies that have been performed to justify the significance between the impact

of the retrenchment and the performance of the company.

1.2 Problem Statement

1.2.1 Company survivors of retrenchment face challenges which are overload

of working in their effort to retain the efficiency job task which affects

the performance in the organization (Emmanuel L, Ellis A, & Moses H,

2018).

1.2.2 The problem that had been issued for some company is to start

considering revising the process strategy of the company due to the

retrenchment of the company (Kapparashetty B, 2020).

1.3 Research Objectives

1.3.1 To determine the impacts of retrenchment towards the company’s

performance in Malaysia.

1.3.2 To identify the interventions on how to increase the company’s

performance due to the retrenchment.

1.4 Research Question

1.4.1 What are the impacts of retrenchment influence the company’s

performance?

1.4.2 What are the suitable interventions to increase the company’s

performance sue to the retrenchment?


1.5 Research Design

In this research study, there are two research designs that have been used which

are descriptive research design (cross-sectional study) and causal research

design.

The first research design is descriptive research design (cross-sectional study).

Descriptive research design is used because this topic is the impacts of

retrenchment that influence the performance of the company in Malaysia and this

topic is related to the current situation.

The second research design is a causal research design. The causal research

design only can be used if wanted to investigate the relationship between the

variables. In this study, would like to investigate the effect and the causal

relationship between variables in which one variable is believed to affect another.

1.6 Data Collection

In the study, for the preliminary phase, primary data is used to collect the data.

Primary data is the first-hand data that have been collected during the duration

of this research period. Besides, questionnaires are used to collect the overall

data in this study. This research will be using a method of quantitative approaches

in a single case study of the impact of retrenchment that influence the

performance of the company in Malaysia. In addition, mostly the current

company in Malaysia had been retrenched due to the current economic situation.

Most of the workers in Malaysia are aware about the impact of retrenchment.
Moreover, this quantitative approach entitled the use of the survey questionnaire.

The questionnaire will distribute through google form to the respondent. This

will collect data on how the impact of retrenchment and to see if the respondents

are satisfied about the performance of the company right now which may

influence some improvement to be better in the future or not. This result will

determine whether the data that has been given to the respondent have a

significant impact on the performance of the company in Malaysia.

1.7 Unit of Analysis

The unit of analysis that is being used in this study is workers that are currently

are working in a company doing the retrenchment. Workers are suitable to be the

unit of analysis of this study. The quantity approach entailed the use of this survey

questionnaire for a total of 300 respondents.
