Method Statement for Epoxy Risen

Floor Coating System

An epoxy risen floor coating system has the ability to withstand
pressure from heavy loads and objects. Because of this characteristic,
it has been shown to be the most suitable coating system for huge
ground floor areas that would carry heavy vehicles like aircraft and
forklifts. The epoxy risen floor coating system is usually used in
hangars, warehouses, and many other places. During or prior to
construction, the construction staff is expected to submit a method
statement (MS) to the consultant handling the project.

Method statements are not always easy to write that is why the
services of a quality engineer are sometimes required in the process
of writing it. Are you trying to prepare a method statement? Here are
the things you should do in preparing a method statement for an
epoxy risen floor coating system.

1. Title

Method Statement for Epoxy Risen Floor Coating System

2. Purpose and Scope

This method statement is for the purpose of painting the concrete floor
with epoxy resin coating system.

The method statement will particularly cover the floor of the hangar
and warehouse, first floor of the working areas.

3. References

• Approved material submittal

• Specification 012340

4. Material

• Epoxy risen floor coating

5. Equipment and Tools

• Task lighting
• Test equipment
• Bobcat
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as Safety Helmet,
Gloves, Protective Footwear, Hearing Protection, High Visibility
Clothing, Eye protection

6. Methodology

6.1 Delivery of materials to the Site

6.1.1. The materials will be transported to the site by the paint factory
and the materials must meet the standard requirements meaning that
the supplier adhered to the 50kph speed limit and 11km distance while
transporting it.

6.1.2. When the materials arrive the site, the security personnel on the
ground will inspect the materials thoroughly and then the materials are
escorted to the storage area by well-trained flagmen

6.2 Materials and handling

6.2.1. The contractor must ensure that the storage is close to the
installation area and the subcontractor must ensure that the materials
are delivered on time to avoid unnecessary delay. The units in the
construction site should be arranged in such a way that loading,
transporting and unloading will flow according to the standard
requirement.

6.2.2. The epoxy coating materials must be transported using secure

trucks and delivered to the site at the right time. Also, it must be
offloaded using the right equipment or it can be offloaded manually
according to the site requirement. After offloading it is stored in a
secure storage area which should be close to the installation area.

6.2.3. The epoxy coating material is best stored in a well-ventilated

storage room that is away from direct sunlight.

6.3 Substrate Conditions & Surface Preparations

6.3.1. Make sure that the reinforced concrete slab on the ground
surface is dry and the edges of the surface are finished. The strength
of the concrete must be greater than 25N/mm2 and the moisture
content should be less than 5% making sure that it adheres to the
manufacturer’s standards.

6.3.2. Before surface preparation commences fully, the contractor

must ensure that the area is free from any form of traffic or activity.

6.3.3. The surface must be roughened using a light grinding machine

or vacuum, this also heals the open pores on the concrete surface.

6.3.4. Remove any contaminant on the surface before any other

preparation process is done, contaminants like oil and grease

6.3.5. Repair and fill up any minor surface defect using epoxy putty.
Defects like cracks, holes, and others must be filled up according to
manufacturer standard.

6.3.6. After floor preparation, the area must be cleaned by vacuum to

remove any debris or dust that is left behind.

6.3.7. Cover the free edges of the surface using a 50mm masking
tape.

6.4 Application of Top floor

6.4.1. Clean substrate again to remove dust and loose materials

6.4.2. Topcoat film is prepared by stirring Base A to disperse any

settlement, after which Hardner B is added to Base A and mixed
slowly for about 2 minutes making sure that air does not get into it,
after mixing, transfer to another container and mix again for 30
seconds.

6.4.3. After mixing, apply the top coat film on the prepared surface
using shirt hair rollers. Application speed should be 0.25kg/m2.

6.4.4. After application, the top coat must be protected using a

polyethylene sheet for a period of 24 hours before allowing foot traffic.
Vehicle traffic should be allowed five days after application.

6.4.5. The subcontractor should inspect the floor after coating before
the main contractor. After the main contractor’s inspection, the
consulting engineers will then perform the final inspection. All of this is
to make sure that the installation meets the requirements.

6.5 Demobilization
6.5.1 After the work is completed, every equipment must be cleared
out of the surface. Making sure that all of them are still in a working
state.

7. Safety

7.1. Make sure that the workers involved in the installation of the
epoxy resin floor coating are experienced and well trained.

7.2. Every stage of the installation must be supervised properly.

Check all the routes of material transportation and remove any form of
obstacle that could cause accidents. There should be frequent
cleaning during working hours.

7.3. Every equipment used must be maintained in accordance with
legal requirements.

7.4. Electrical connections should be handled by qualified and

approved electricians.

7.5. The workplace must be barricaded and well protected to prevent

unauthorized personnel.

7.6. A work permit must be issued to every person by the main

contractor before work starts on the site.

7.7. Appropriate loading and offloading equipment should be provided

by the contractor. All the equip, eats should be certified and handled
by a qualified operator.

7.8. Keep a material safety data sheet to ensure that materials star
handled well especially chemicals. Major spill kit available and
personal protective equipment must be made available to every
personnel must be worn at all times.

8. Other things you must handle

8.1. Land contamination: Make sure you remove every contaminated

soil and dispose properly in line with the Construction Environmental
Management Plan. Make sure that every equipment is free from
contamination before it is used on daily basis.

8.2. Dust: Dust infested vehicles must be cleaned properly before use.

8.3. Noise: The noise level of the work area must be monitored from
time to time. This ensures that every process is carried out within the
permissible limit of noise. If noise rises above permissible limit, ear
plugs must be employed to achieve balance. Noise level should be
monitored at regular intervals.
That’s the process you must cover when preparing a method
statement for an epoxy risen floor coating system.
