During the great Depression, America witnessed the birth of many successful and

fascinating writings. Different writers portrayed the various difficulties experienced by the

migrants. One of the well-known classics and the best read stories is ”the Grapes of Wrath”

written by : John Steinbeck.

“The Grapes of Wrath,” by John Steinbeck is a classic novel noted for its descriptive

quality and fascinating writing techniques. The Grapes of Wrath is a landmark of American

literature that portraits the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s violent

reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength. It is the story of one Oklahoma family,

the Joads, who are driven off their farm and forced to travel west to the promised land of

California. This story illustrates the hardship and oppression suffered by migrant laborers during

the Great Depression.

Then, Tom Joad and his family are in search of jobs, land, and hope for a happier

future. John Steinbeck's masterpiece is a story of human unity and love as well as the need for

cooperative rather than individualistic ideals during hard times.

After that, John Steinbeck emphasizes on the purity of man's relationship to the natural

world and to each other (which is the main theme in the story). This means: Machines have no

place in this relationship. They act as a barrier between men and the land. They are dangerous

because they perform the function of men with greater efficiency.

In John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family and the changing world in

which they live is portrayed from a naturalistic point of view. Steinbeck characterizes the Joads

and their fellow migrants as simple, insignificant creatures who are on an endless search for

paradise.

While struggling against nature and society to find a better life for themselves, the Joads

experience tremendous growth. At the beginning of their migration, they are fighting for

survival in a world which they do not understand and can barely cope with.
However, the pain they suffer along their journey eventually opens their eyes to the world

around them. Grandpa Joad becomes the first of the family who fights to survive, followed by

Grandma Joad.

Another dominate theme in The Grapes of Wrath, it is: capitalism is evil. It is the capitalist

society that drives the Joads from their farm; it is the capitalist society that keeps the dust bowl

migrants homeless and starving.

In addition, the main character in the novel is Tom Joad: Despite the fact that Tom

attacks a policeman at one point in the novel and beats a man at another point, Tom's actions,

although illegal according to the letter of the law, are morally just.

Finally, John Steinbeck‘s text “the Grapes of Wrath” clearly highlighted some of the

main important values in life as love, strength in unity and survival. Steinbeck have clearly

exemplified the extent to which the migrants had struggled for surviving. For this reason, this

story is one of the most beloved and influential stories till now days.
