Period 1

● Welcome! It’s windy, starting to feel like fall

● It's our choir week!
● Shosholoza, titanium, solos - Wednesday night concert
● Welcomed me into the classroom
● What is your favorite movie quote? Tell the movie its from and what the quote is
● Goes down the roll call list and they answer the movie quote
● Much less diversity
● Took about 15 minutes
● Announcements: tomorrow is broadway acting workshop (special zoom linked in choir
announcement), concert on wed at 7 oclock (please communicate this to your parents or
family RN, gave them the template in the chat - they have concert tickets),
● This is a live event, not a prerecorded video, live chat, supporting fellow students. Invite
people who normally wouldn't be able to come to your concert in person ($6 per person,
$15 for a whole family)
● 18 solos, small ensembles, from all the different choirs
● Share it on your social media! Let’s gain some publicity!
● Another reminder: celine, i still haven’t gotten your video yet
● Ms. Shultz, student teacher, is leading warm-ups today
● Head over heart, heart over pelvis, pelvis over feet
● Does some stretching - directed their movements
● Take a nice deep breath and hold it for 3, then “push out”, 3x
● Starts low, m-ah-m, slide, 1-5-1, keep it forward, almost in your nose, goes up by half
steps - mostly did not sing along with the piano
● I noticed some kids were not singing
● Says: women will start here on this note, men will start here
● Don't let things fall back in your throat, keep it forward, 5-3-1, descending by half steps
● Breaking up into sectionals, review what we’ve done so far, he will take the men,
● Alright men! We are working on NOT jumping down the octave. You all have to be high
baritones in this song. You can all hit these notes, but you just have to feel it in your
range (Jambo bwano), played melody and sang the lyrics to it, left hand playing
accompaniment reduc. A little
● Sing throughout the entire phrase, don't clip the ends
● Only 7 men in this choir
● Review the solo section together
● Counted the rests
● Kept them updated on where they were in the music (ok we are on page 6, m 5 now”)
● Then what happens going into page 8? Someone unmute themselves
● Yes that's true. That’s true. But I'm looking for something different here. Another person
answers. Then another and he finally gets it. There's a key change! We aren't gonna
tackle all of that right now, but it is mostly the same melody, just higher
● Went back to the solo, but then went into rehearsing the key change
● All the way from the top - ill give you four bars -sang and played with them the whole
time
● Sometimes would lag, but in general the audio was pretty clear
● This song has the men in unison the whole time
● Shouted out to remember the changing dynamic
● Contest due on friday to submit a pumpkin carving/decorating contest. But don't use a
cheating stencil! DM to tesoro choir insta, there will be voting
● Celine stick around so we can talk about your video

Period 5
● Welcome, weather is windy, movie quote attendance
● Concert/ticket announcements
● Our concerts are one of the main sources of revenue for us to purchase sheet music, etc
● Someone asked why we have to pay for something that is going to be streaming live on
youtube (chat). He responds: $30-$50,000 dollars to fund this program every year, no (or
not much of) a school budget, its entertainment, just like if you go to another type of
concert
● Went into more detail about how the concert will go - link will be up for a week, prices,
software was bought, copyright to film was bought, etc
● Normal concert tickets go for 11 or 12 dollars
● Woooow things are expensive at this school brooo
● Broadway workshop announcement, pumpkin decorating/carving contest, virtual voting
on halloween, winner will get a halloween gift basket
● Student teacher did the same warm-up
● Mr. hancock interrupted - Sarah, lilly, you have to stop the spamming in the chat!
● Again, she didn’t sing with them, just played piano. I think I would have done this
differently
● I also noticed that humming is hard to look for student engagement-you can’t tell if they
are singing because their mouths aren't moving
● Student teacher asks them to take out Ruben, Ruben
● Go over page 3. First page all unison, second and third page you split. Takes the
sopranos first, plays the melody but not any accompaniment and does not sing the
words with them. Then took the alto part, same thing. Both parts went over twice
● Played a piano reduction (just chords), sang VERY quietly with them
● Took a small break and said “next page” to flip the page
● New section: had them clap to the off beats where they don't sing and ha-ha on the
notes they did. She did this to get the rhythm in their body because it is syncopated and
staccato
● Sopranos and altos rehearsed separately, then both together
● Do beginning to where we ended, with piano
● Then stopped playing piano, started keeping rhythm by clapping for the rounds
● Asks the choir if they would rather speak through it to get the rhythm or put it on words.
One person spoke up and said “speaking”. Went through it once
Period 6
● Class is almost all males!
● Started the class at 2:03, gave them 3 minutes to come in
● Have a state of the art music lab at tesoro
● Commercial music/music production/technology
● Just did the f, c, dmin scales on the piano
● Brings up a virtual piano
● Remember our pattern wwhwwwh
● Bb is the 3rd black key in the group of 3
● Goes through the scale twice (whole step up to c, half step up to..)Two black flat notes,
eb and bb
● Instructed them to open up their online piano and practice the scale on their own
● If you need more help or I went too quickly, you can go to canvas and look under todays
module and you will see the bb scale
● Spells out notes and plays: Bb chord(135), then Fmaj, Eb chord, minor chord for this
week is G minor\
● Some songs that use these chords in the key of Bb (Plays them) : can you feel the love
tonight, a thousand years, I shot the sheriff, teenage dream, johnny be good (spanned
many different genres on purpose)
● Blue cohort will have their test on the scale and chords tomorrow, red cohort on thursday
● Assigns a project: he will give you a hypothetical budget ($5000) and you need to go
researching and shopping for an at home recording studio
● Open sweetwater.com - good customer service for an online retailer, they have tutorial
videos on different types of gear, they provide candy with every order
● Will give them a list of what they need to buy - computer, desk, audio interface,
condenser mic, xlr cable, midi controller (keyboard), set of headphones, studio
monitors/speakers, quarter inch cables, DAW software thats professional, mic stand, pop
filter, etc.
● Shares screen, sweetwater, shop by category, search by price or brand or popular, etc,
● Goes through mics, monitors, interfaces, gives general price range, look at reviews, tips
(you don't want just one speaker, you want two bc you need to hear the LR spectrum),
here is the one i use, a desktop will be more bang for your buck, mac or pc, etc
● Musiciansfriend or amazon are also good places to look online for gear
● Gives them a few minutes to start looking around the website
