2 ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS INVOLVING BASIC ARITHMETIC OPERATIONS

Example 1: Simplify each of the following

a) (3x + 5y) + (8x – y – 9) b) (6ab + 2bc + 10) – (ab + 3bc – 2)

c) (12mn – 4p) + (6 + 7p) – (10mn + p – 2) d) (4xy + 5k) – (–3k + 7) + (13xy – k)

Repeated multiplication of algebraic expressions

(a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)2
(a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)3
(a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)4

Example 1: Simplify each of the following:

a) m x m x m x m b) ( x + 5) x ( x + 5 ) c) ( p – 3q ) x ( p – 3q ) x ( p – 3q )

Example 2: Write each of the following in the form of repeated multiplication:

a) (𝑥 + 4𝑦)2 b) (9𝑝 − 3𝑟𝑞 )5

Multiply and divide algebraic expressions

Example 1: Simplify each of the following
a) 3𝑎3 𝑏 × 4𝑎𝑏4 d) – 4mn × 7m2
b) 20m 4 n 2 ÷ 5m 2 n 3 e) 4ab 3 ÷ 6a 2b

c) 21xy × 6x ÷ 14y 3 z. f) 6xy ÷ 20px 2 × (–5p 6 y)
