2 ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS INVOLVING BASIC ARITHMETIC OPERATIONS 6 OCTOBER 2020

Example 1: Simplify each of the following

a) 5 x + 7 x – 2 x b) 6 y + 4 x – 2y + 3 x

c) (3x + 5y) + (8x – y – 9) d) (5ab + 6bc + 10) – (ab + 3bc – 2)

c) (14mn – 4p) + (6 + 5p) – (9mn + p – 2) d) (4xy + 2k) – (–3k + 5) + (3xy – k)

Repeated multiplication of algebraic expressions

(a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)2
(a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)3
(a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) × (a + b) = (a + b)4

Example 1: Simplify each of the following:

a) a x a x a x a b) ( f + 5) x ( f + 5 ) c) ( p – 2q ) x ( p – 2q ) x ( p – 2q )

Example 2: Write each of the following in the form of repeated multiplication:

a) (𝑥 + 4𝑦)2 b) (2𝑝 − 5𝑟𝑞 )5
Multiply and divide algebraic expressions
