At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
1. Understand a thesis statement
2. Differentiate thesis statement and a topic sentence
3. Construct a thesis statement from a given topic
4. Demonstrate understanding of the lesson by finishing all the tasks given

In this lesson, students will learn how to organize their thoughts when writing
and communicating. Studying this lesson will help the students enhance their writing
and communicating skills for the betterment of themselves and the society.

THESIS STATEMENT

Writing is an activity that requires organization. There are two important


components to consider in writing: Thesis statement and Outline format.

● Thesis statement is the overall idea of a work. It is a general statement that


presents essentials points that will lead the readers the right direction. It is

composed of one sentence that expresses the main idea of a research paper or
essay, such as an expository or argumentative essay. It directly answers a
question or makes a claim.

▪ An expository essay/paper explains something to the audience/reader.


▪ An argumentative essay/paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies
this claim with specific evidence.

Note: A thesis statement is composed of a topic sentence with at least 2-3 or


more essential points to be discussed in the succeeding paragraphs of your
paper.

● A good thesis statement:


● Should be focused and succinct
● Must be framed as declarative sentence
● Should have at least two ideas that will be developed in succeeding
sections of the work

Example of an expository thesis statement:

diversity, rich resources and a variety of perspectives.

ESSENTIAL POINTS

● A thesis statement is different from a topic sentence in two aspects:

• First, the thesis statement is the main idea of an essay; and

• Second, the thesis statement contains at least two supporting points which are
developed in succeeding paragraphs.

1. Topic: Do you think dress code is necessary for all schools?


● When you have uniforms in schools it adds a great sense of safety since
everyone is wearing the same dress. This also means that students cannot
be identified and classed into gangs on the basis of their clothing. This
also dissipates threats such as theft and group violence.
2. Topic: What animal makes the best pet?
● While most owners are aware of the amount of joy and laughter dogs
bring to them and their family, they are unaware that their dogs love
them unconditionally and can help them have better lives.
3. Topic: Should abortion be legal in the Philippines?
● Abortion should be illegal because whatever arguments the pro-choice
side can make, it does not matter when we are discussing the life of a
human being. Abortion is murder.
4. Topic: What are the effects of Covid-19 virus?
● Because many people might be unwilling to vaccinate in country x due
to their reluctance towards a COVID-19 vaccine, the government must
ensure that mass awareness campaigns regarding the need to vaccinate
starts prior to the launch of the vaccine.
5. Topic: What are the qualities of a good public servant?
● Public servants need to be considerably more data- and tech-literate to
understand the powers and opportunities afforded by emerging

technology. They need the ability to move beyond just "tick-the-box"


programs and policies and embrace innovative approaches and
partners.
