NCEA - Have your say

Talk to us about the future of NCEA

Public Engagement: 27 May – 19 October 2018

Learners

1
Why review NCEA?

NCEA was introduced over 15 years ago.

It’s a really flexible qualification that works for many young people, but we know we can
make it better for everyone.

This year, we have a powerful opportunity to explore ways to strengthen NCEA so it

works well for all New Zealanders.

As someone who is working towards their NCEA or is a recent NCEA graduate, your voice
is critical!

Let’s review…

3
What does NCEA mean for learners?

NCEA is our national qualification. Each year,

120,000 young people gain an NCEA.
NCEA is important to us all, but it’s most
important to learners.
NCEA should give you the opportunities you
need to step into the world feeling confident
that you have what it takes to succeed in
work and further study.

Help us understand how NCEA can

support students like you to move
into the next phase of your life.
We need your voice!

Over the next few months, we hope to talk to

with thousands of New Zealanders from all
walks of life.

We really want to hear what young people

think about NCEA.

What works well? What’s not so great? What

could be better?

He aria nui ... some big
opportunities
We need to hear about your experiences
with NCEA. What works well now? What’s
not working so well?

Nothing in these big opportunities is

completely new, but we need to hear your
thoughts on whether we should use them
to strengthen NCEA.

These are not the only possibilities. Tell us

what you think would make NCEA even
better!
Tell us what you think

• Do you get to take courses in areas that interest you?

What needs to change for that to be possible?

• Can you see how the learning you do for your NCEA
will help take you to where you want to go in your
life?

• What do you think people need to learn to be ready

for life, study, and work in the 21st century?

• Is there too much assessment? Or not enough?

9
Not in scope
Some things are not in scope for the NCEA Review, but they may be
worth discussing because they affect how NCEA works:

• NCEA is standards-based

• Both achievement and unit standards count towards NCEA

• University Entrance and NZ Scholarship Awards

• Individual achievement and unit standards and resources.
