Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the “Leaf House” isn’t just for looks, as it boasts “verandas
and in-between open spaces
allow trade winds from the sea to pass trough the building, providing natural ventilation and
passive cooling.” for the first picture in gallery.

The roof acts as a big leaf that

protects the enclosed spaces of
the home from the hot sun.
With no corridors, the inside
and outside of the Leaf House
almost appear to be fused. The
architects see the design as low-
tech eco-friendly solution that
has the greatest impact.
CONCEPT
Casa Folha

This project sought inspiration in Brazilian indigenous

architectures, the result of hot and humid climates such as
the location of the house, angra dos Reis, Rio de
Janeiro. The roof serves as a large leaf that protects all
rooms in the house from the sun, as well as the free spaces
between them. These free spaces represent the essence of
the project, and of course, they are the most interesting and
most used spaces by people who frequent the house. Most
of the time they have a very high right foot and allow the
dominant southeast wind to come head-on from the sea
towards and through the house, providing all areas of the
house with open or closed ventilation and passive
cooling. Low-tech eco-efficiency, where it has the greatest
power of action in a building, the concept of architectural
design.
We understand the beach house as a means of
improving and making human interaction with
nature more pleasant. Never separate them
completely. There are no corridors. There is a lot of
transparency and integration between inside and
outside, almost a fusion between them. In this
respect, it is interesting to highlight the passage of
the landscaping on the ground floor of the house,
both due to the use of vegetation and the
swimming pool which, when crossing the house,
becomes a water mirror on the back veranda. This
balcony is called by the office staff as a “Brazilian
lounge” for the adoption of hammocks for the
sauna rest area, buried in the land that starts to
rise from this balcony.
The entire roof structure was made of laminated
eucalyptus wood, which, due to its manufacturing
process, manages to overcome large spans (20
meters is the largest in the house) with ease and
aesthetic refinement. The roof, due to its complex
geometry, is made of small pieces of wood
(pine). Eucalyptus, as well as Pinus, are species
planted for reforestation and used as raw material
considered renewable, due to the speed at which
they reach the ideal moment to be harvested. All the
finishing surfaces of the house, except for glass and
patinated copper, are natural: Slate rust in strips,
natural wood, wood cross post on the ground floor,
and bamboo wefts.
The use of these natural
materials, glass and patinated
copper, which takes on a
greenish tone and has a very
long life , and the organic
aesthetics rich in details such as
different rhythms and textures,
provoked an interesting fact: The
feeling that the house, brand new
, it seems to be there forever, in
great harmony with the exuberant
nature of Angra. The feeling of
belonging to the place.
plan
“The roof acts as a big leaf that protects from the hot sun all the enclosed spaces of the house as the
in-between open spaces, truly the most important ones.

These in-between open spaces represent the essence of the design. They are the social areas, where the the owner of the house and his guests spend
most of their time. The very generous heights of these spaces, which varies from 3 to 9 meters, allow the SE trade winds from the sea to pass perfectly
longitudinally trough the building, providing natural ventilation and and passive cooling both to the enclosed and open spaces.
