Questions:

When coaching younger Children what do you put the emphasis on, winning or enjoyment of
football?

What age do you believe developmental football should change into competitive football?

What are the guidelines sent to you by the FA on coaching?

In Iceland every coach at a football club had to be UEFA B licensed do you believe this should be the
same in the UK?

Why do you think less English talent is making it to the top of the game over here?

What  do you believe the FA should do about it?

Do you believe more foreign players coming over to England is making it harder for homegrown
talent to progress?

Tom
Why do you think that less English talent is reaching the top of the game right now?

Have you coached anyone who has been at an academy before?

Only 1 in 200 players that have left an academy and joined a team will make it to the first team, why
do you think that is?

Do you believe the increase in foreign players joining the English leagues is making it harder for
players to progress?

What is the role of Henley town FC?

While at Eastleigh FC did you see young homegrown talent going to waste?

You have said before you are keen to promote the youth at Henley, what are you doing to help
recognise the talent of youth players?

Do you believe while you were at Eastleigh players were being able to develop themselves more than
at a club higher up in the pyramid?

When do you believe that developmental Football should Turn into competitive football?

Why do you think young people drop out of Football?

How do academies look for players?

What do you think the FA can do to help grassroots football?

Has coronavirus effected players being scouted?

Jack:

So you coach youth players, what do you look for in a player?

What do you believe other clubs will look for in a player?

Youth wise do you think more needs to be done helping homegrown talent make it?

Do you believe premier league teams are wasteful with some of there younger players?

Audio Visual

Becoming a footballer is the dream of many Me speaking to the camera and B-roll footage of
young people across the UK. It is the most players playing football
popular sport in the UK, many young
children are aspiring to become the next
Wayne Rooney or Frank Lampard. Sadly,
less than 1% of players that join academies
actually make it professional that is a
success rate of 0.012%. Even if the player is
able to make it professional only 1 in 200
youth academy players will make the first
team according to former head of FA Talent
Identification, Richard Allen. So, what is
going wrong? To answer this question, we
are going to have to take a look at how
players are bought into the game and how
they are coached at grassroots level.

A very popular way for players to join an

academy is through open trials, these trials
are designed to bring in players that haven’t
been scouted by any academy, the other
option is to have been scouted by a network
set up by teams. After this they are then put B-roll footage
into a longer trial at the academy, if they are
seen as good enough then the academy will
sign them till they are 16 then offer them a
scholarship or drop them if they are not
believed to be up to standard, here is ex
Eastleigh FC coach and current Henley
Town FC town Coach Tom Guy explaining
the system

An even more important aspect in my

opinion is how kids are being coached when
first joining a football club at 6 years old or
so. I believe that lots of coaches focus on
winning and less on the enjoyment therefore
they will pick the bigger and louder players
over the smaller and quieter players that
may be better technically. A prime example
of this is when Lionel Messi was told he Footage of Tom Guy and Jack Woodley
was too small to play football and now look speaking on the subject
at him, arguably the best player in the

world.

Many young players are dropping out of
football, this included me. I found myself
not enjoying football around the age
of 11/12 as I  found it becoming less
enjoyable and more competitive, football
should be about enjoyment at that age

So this asks the question, when does

developmental football turn into competitive
football?

So from these answers it looks like 14/15

should be the age range that developmental
football changes into competitive football.
After lots of searching around, I have found
that the FA haven’t actually set out any
guidelines on when this change should be
made, leaving many coaches in the dark
which isn’t good for players either.

Now one of the biggest issues I and many

others believe is the influx of foreign
players joining the premier league. In the
2019/20 season 63% of players in the
premier league where foreign players, this
left the English top flight having the lowest
amount of homegrown players in the top 5
European leagues, while in the Spanish La
Liga 60% of players were homegrown
talent.   Errol Crawford speaking on the subject
So what can be done to stop this?

Well currently each premier league team has Voiceover with B-roll footage
a maximum of 25 players in there squad,
only 8 of these players have to be
homegrown player. If we take the current
champions of England Liverpool’s team in
the 2019-20 season only 39% of players
were of English nationality, compare this to
the champions of Spain, Real Madrid 56%
of players were Spanish. So I believe
extending the minimum amount of English
players up to 10 would help increase the
amount of English players playing for top
clubs in England.   Errol Crawford speaking on the subject

Well what is interesting is that now the reverse Stats and statistics on screen
seems to be happening as many English players
are looking to other countries on the continent
as it is too difficult for them to progress over
here

A very common way for players and

coaches alike to progress is going down the
pyramid to come back up whether that be
through loans or through signing on to a
club. Many players who aren’t getting game
time for there club will be loaned out to a
club lower down the pyramid to get
experience and game time. Jack Woodley and Errol Crawford speaking on
the topic

A prime example of this is Crystal Palace Stats on screen

and Young English talent Eberechi Eze who
wasn’t getting game time at QPR so stepped
down a few levels to, at the time, League 2
side, Wycombe Wanderers and scored 5
goals in 20 games and made a huge impact
to the team! He is now a first team player at
premier league side Crystal Palace and is
representing England at Under 21 level

So after hearing all of the issues facing

young players trying to progress, what is
being done and what have people seen being
done?
Well current Henley Coach was at Non-League B-roll footage
side Eastliegh and saw some good progression

Thank you for watching this documentary it is

greatly appreciated
