CASE STUDY 1
A 36 weeks baby weighing 1,500g was delivered via NSD. The newborn has a lusty cry, with a heart rate
of 110 beats/min. His body is pink but his extremities are blue. The newborn has weak muscle activity
but appears healthy after delivery. The infant is transferred to the nursery for further care.
1. Should the newborn be classified as a well, high-risk or sick newborn? Explain your answer.
2. Give at least 4 management for a high-risk newborn.
3. Do high–risk newborns need immediate care?
4. Would you expect the vital signs of a high–risk newborn to be normal or abnormal?
CASE STUDY 2
A 39 weeks newborn is delivered via CS after a diagnosis of fetal distress syndrome. The newborn is
cyanotic, with a heart rate of 60 beats per minute and having a very slow and irregular breathing
pattern. He does not react to irritation nor does any movement on 1 st minute after delivery.
Resuscitation was made. After 5 minutes, the newborn’s body is now pink but still with blue extremities.
The newborn’s heart rate of 98 beats per minute, cries poorly, no sounds but with facial grimace noted.
The newborn appears lethargic and at 2 hours, he suddenly had a seizure. The blood glucose is normal.
CASE STUDY 3
A full-term infant develops jaundice on the 4 th day and her total bilirubin level is 1mg/dL. Both the
mother and the baby are Type O+. Her hemoglobin level is 18 g/dL and the Coomb’s test is negative.
