THE APOSTLES' CREED

I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY,

MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH: AND IN
JESUS CHRIST HIS ONLY SON, OUR LORD;
WHO WAS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY GHOST,
BORN OF THE VI RGIN MARY, SUFFERED
UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, WAS CRUCIFIED,
DEAD, AND BURIED; HE DESCENDED INTO
HELL; THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN FROM
THE DEAD; HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND
SITS ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD; THE
FATHER ALMIGHTY; FROM THENCE HE SHALL
COME TO JUDGE THE QUICK THE DEAD. I
BELIEVE IN THE HOLY GHOST; THE HOLY

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 10

III. OUR CONVICTIONS: KNOWING WHAT WE BELIEVE
A. OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH
1. The Short Version
a) WE BELIEVE that there is ONE LIVING AND TRUE GOD, eternally existing in
three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that
this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.
b) WE BELIEVE that the SCRIPTURES of the Old and New Testaments are the
Word of God which is the wholly authoritative, and infallible rule of faith and
practice for believers.
c) WE BELIEVE in GOD THE FATHER, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in
holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs
of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all
who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
d) WE BELIEVE in JESUS CHRIST, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the
Holy Spirit. We believe in His birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings, His
substitionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, His ascension into heaven, perpetual
intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth. We believe in His
first coming, Jesus inaugurated the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.
e) WE BELIEVE in the HOLY SPIRIT, Who came forth from the Father and Son to
convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and
empower for ministry all who believe in Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells
every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide.
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all biblical
gifts of the Spirit.
f) WE BELIEVE that all MEN are Sinners by nature and by choice and are therefore
under condemnation. We believe that God regenerates and baptizes by the Holy
Spirit, those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

g) WE BELIEVE in the universal CHURCH, the living spiritual body, of which Christ
is the Head and all regenerated persons are members.
h) WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ORDINANCES to the
church: baptism; and the Lord's Supper. We believe in water baptism and communion
open to all believers.
i) WE BELIEVE in the laying on of hands for the empowering of the Holy Spirit, for the
ordination of pastors, elders, and deacons, for receiving gifts of the Spirit, and for
healing.
j) WE BELIEVE in the personal, visible, APPEARING OF CHRIST to earth and the
consummation of His Kingdom; in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and
in the eternal blessing of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked.

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 11

k) WE BELIEVE in what is termed "The Apostle's Creed" as embodying fundamental
facts of Christian faith, and endorse the historic orthodox creeds of the church.
2. The Long Version: The Association of Vineyard's Statement of Faith pamphlet (available
through the church office - call us if you are interested).

B. Our Values
1. Psalms 127:1-2 ~ “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the
Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and
stay up late, toiling for food to eat--for he grants sleep to those he loves.
House: The values, priorities and practices built into a personal, familial or corporate
life. Foundation: Followership of Jesus Christ alone. I Corinthians 3:11
Walls: Values: What we deem as important regarding the way we believe or act.
Rooms: Priorities and Practices - The actions and activities that take place given the
values a person or group holds and the purpose for which one exists.
2. Vineyard Values: The values we hold are the very roots from which our behavior
springs. Our values can be summed up in one word - RELATIONSHIP - all that we do
and say should nurture an intimate, caring and self-disclosing relationship with God and
with each other.
The values we try to hold are the same values we believe God holds. The following list
shows some of the ways to love what He loves and move away from the things He
doesn't love.
a) We value God's love for________________ Viewing each other, our leaders and other
churches with God's eyes is critical. According to John 17, unity is THE instrument by
which the lost will know God. Thus, we are to bless one another and speak the truth in
love. 1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 4:1
b) _______________________________To be like Jesus in his love for The Father, for
others, and for His holy life of communion and obedience to God is what we were
made for. Rom. 8:29, 30; Phil. 3:7-11
c) We value God's love for intimate, childlike, persevering___________________.
Living a life of simple obedience and trust in God's goodness and sovereignty is
important to us. Dan. 3; Heb. 11:6; Rom. 4
d) We value being ______________________Moment by moment responsiveness to the
direction and leading of the Holy Spirit helps us "live out the life and ministry of Jesus
Christ on the earth". Gal. 5:16ff

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 12

e) We value God's love for the _______________ . God is known through the wholeness
of family relationship. Eph. 3:14; 5:22-33; 6:1-4
f) We value God's heart for _________________________________. To serve instead
of being served is vital to Christian leaders. Humility, selflessness and care for people
should characterize the aims of all leaders. (Due to the significant authority and
responsibility the pastor and church leadership exercise, prayer for them is vital and
non-negotiable if a church is to fulfill its purpose.) Mark 10:39
g) We value God's love for _________________. Because God glorifies Himself through
His creation we are to care for and be stewards of the earth's resources. Gen. 1-3
h) We value God's heart for the __________. The poor are given special attention by the
Father as revealed in the Scriptures. Isaiah 58
i) We value God's _______________ . We believe that His mercy is fundamental to all
that God does in salvation. We therefore aim to extend mercy to one another and to all
who we minister to. Rom. 9:17
j) We value God's heart for________________________________________. We aim to
reach out to the lost, the sick and the dying, through preaching the Gospel, healing the
wounded, and by seeing God work signs and wonders. Luke 4:18, 19; Matt. 10:1-4ff;
Acts 10:38
k) Heartfelt, Expressive _______________________________.- John 4:23; Rom. 12:1-3
Priority: Worship, Prayer, Stewardship
l) Simplicity, Honesty, and _____________________________. Rom. 15:7; 1 Cor. 13:4
Priority: Relationship, Worship
m) ______________________________________________ of all Believers - 1 Pet. 2:9, 10
Priority: Ministry, Relationship
n) _____________________________Healing - Col. 2:13-16; Rom. 8:1-3; 1 Cor. 1:23; 2:2;
Priority: Prayer, Healing, Ministry
o) Persevering, faith-filled _____________________________- Luke 18; Matt. 6, 7; Is. 66
Priority: Prayer, Worship
p) The _______________________of God - Lk. 15; Jn. 5; 17:26; Rom. 8:15-16; Gal. 3:28
Priority: Worship, Relationship, Ministry, Evangelism, and Discipleship
q) Being _________________________________________To Reach This Generation For
Christ - I Cor. 9:19

V. OUR PURPOSE:
KNOWING WHO WE
ARE AND WHERE
WE'RE GOING

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 40

IV. Our Purpose: Knowing Who We Are and Where We're Going
A. Riding the Waves of God's Purposes For His Church
1. Introduction:
"Christ's church is the primary means which God intends to use to bring in His rule on
the earth". Agree or disagree? If this is true then why does the Church in the West seem
so weak and unable to fulfill its calling?

Main Point:
Any church family committed to lining itself up with the purposes for which God has
made it will experience the blessing, the empowerment, and the guidance of God to
fulfill its destiny on the earth. Why? Because God builds the Church; we simply do what
He's doing.

2. God's Love And Intentions Towards The Church

a. The Church = "The ones who have been called out or summoned."
b. The Church is _____________________________________________________
Ephesians 2: 21, 22 "And in him you too are being built together to become a
dwelling in which God lives by his spirit."
Point: God loves the Church and longs for intimacy.
c. The Church is ______________________________________________________
Ephesians 1:22, 23 "And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be
head over everything for the church which is his body, the fullness of him who fills
everything in every way."

d. The Church is the ____________________________________________________

Ephesians 3: 10 "His intent was that now through the church the manifold wisdom of
God should be known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realm ...

e. The Church is _______________________________________________________

Ephesians 2:19 "Now you are no longer stranger to God...but you are God's very own
family...and you belong in God's household with every other Christian." Galatians
3:28 "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus... ." Romans 8:16 "The
Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."
Point: God wants to father us and to bring everyone into his family; it is here where
his unconditional love and acceptance brings healing and freedom.

f. The Church is _________________________________________________________

Matthew 16:18 "... on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not
overcome it."
Point: God has chosen us as the means to roll back the darkness.

g. The Church is _________________________________________________________
Ephesians 5:25 "... Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make
her holy ...and to present her to himself as a radiant church...".
Point: Love the Church and speak no evil of Christ's Bride.

3. God Builds and Grows the Church

a. 1 Corinthians 3:7 ~ “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything but only
God, who makes things grow."

b. Removing Barriers to the Waves God Sends

1) The Church is an Organism not an Organization
a) "All living things grow."
b) The wrong question: "What will make our church grow?"
c) The right question: "What is keeping our church from growing?"

2) Making ____________________________________________________________
a) Bodies out of balance have "dis-ease" - i.e. sickness and discomfort
b) Bodies in balance simply grow without needing a command to do so

c. Conclusion
God is committed to loving, empowering, and utilizing the Church as the means
to penetrate the darkness. Only a commitment to getting the Church healthy and
balanced will enable us to participate with Him in His mission.

B. The Five Primary Purposes of the Church

1. Knowing the Purposes of God for His Church

A) Two Critical Questions:
1) "What is our business/purpose?" (i.e. "Why do we exist?")
2) "How's business?"(i.e. "Are we fulfilling our purpose?")

B) Jesus's Life and Ministry as the Window:

John 1: 18 - "No one has ever seen God, but the One and Only, who is at the
Father's side has made Him known."
John 5:19 - "... .I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can
only do what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son
does also."
John 4:34 - "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of Him who sent me and to
finish His work."

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 42

C) Exercise Sheet #1: Discovering God's Purposes For the Church
Here are just a few of the Scriptures that we'd like you to look up and try to see
which purpose of the church is being focused upon. Try to sum up a verse with a
simple word or phrase like "Worship" or "Discipleship", etc. Some Scriptures may
have more than one purpose in it.

Scripture Purpose For The Church

1. Matt. 5:13-16; 24:14; Acts 1:81 ________________________________
2. Matt. 9:35-10:1; Luke 4:18, 19 ________________________________

10. I Peter 5: 10, 11; Eph. 4:11-16 ________________________________
11. Phil. 2:1-10; Rom. 15:1-7; Gal. 6:1, 2 _______________________________
12. Col. 1:24-28; Heb. 13:7 _______________________________

2. The 5 Primary Purposes of the Church Delineated

#1 ________________________________________________________________________.
Luke 4:21, 23 ~ "Then the master of the house ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the
streets and the lanes of the city and bring in here the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame...
Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be full."

Matthew 10:7, 8 ~ "And as you go, preach saying, 'The Kingdom of God is at hand.' Heal the
sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."

#2 _________________________________________________________________________
Ephesians 2:19 ~ "Now you are no longer strangers to God... but you are members of God's
very own family... and you belong in God's household with every other Christian." (LB)
John 13:34 ~ "A new covenant I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you
must love one another."

#3 _________________________________________________________________________
John 13:14 ~"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should
wash one another's feet."
Galatians 5:13 ~ "You My brothers were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to
indulge the sinful nature, rather serve one another in love."

#4 ________________________________________________________________________
Matthew 28:18-20 ~ "...Jesus... said, 'All authority in heaven and earth has been given to
Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing... and teaching them to obey
everything I commanded you."'.
Ephesians 4: 11-13 ~"It was He who gave...(ministry gifts and offices)...to prepare God's
people for works of service so that the Body of Christ may be built up... and become mature,
attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

#5 ________________________________________________________________________
Mark 12: 28-30 ~ "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The most
important one," answered Jesus, "is this: Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and
with all your strength."

John 4:23 ~ "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship
the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks."

3. Most Churches Focus on One Purpose (Chart A, pg. 48)

Churches are driven by tradition, personalities, relationship, programs, etc.

4. "Explaining the Church's Purposes": The Purpose Driven Paradigm (Acts 2:42-47) (Chart B, pg.49 )
A. "driven" = "guided, directed"
B. Focus: Time, Money, Energy around the 5 Purposes

5. The Need for a Clear Statement of Purpose
A. A clear purpose builds morale
B. A clear purpose reduces frustration
C. A clear purpose allows concentration - Philippians 3:13
D. A clear purpose attracts cooperation- Ezra 10:4
E. A clear purpose assists evaluation- II Cor. 13:5
"Efficiency is doing right things. Effectiveness is doing things right".

6. Examples of Purpose Statements - Measurable, Attainable, Practical (Chart C, pg 49.)

Two Critical Questions
1) "What's our business (purpose)?" (i.e. Why do we exist?)
2) "How's business?"(i.e. "Are we fulfilling our reason for existing?")

7. The Salem Vineyard's Purpose Statement

We are a caring church family seeking to love God passionately and to reproduce healthy Spirit-
led followers of Christ by praying, gathering, healing, equipping, and sending people to speak the
words and do the works of Jesus Christ.
1) _________________________________________________________ - Purpose - Fellowship
We believe God desires the local body of Christ to grow in meaningful relationship and love for
one another; to do this requires a certain level of commitment, trust, accountability and
responsibility.
2) _____________________________________________________________-Purpose- Worship
Our highest value is to learn to love, obey and enjoy the God who made us. His presence heals
us, renews us and empowers us to make Himself and His purposes the foremost priority in our
lives.

3) ______Reproduce healthy spirit-led followers of Christ ______________-Purpose- All Five

The natural response of any organism is to reproduce itself. We believe healthy churches will
reproduce healthy families; healthy families will reproduce healthy individuals; healthy
individuals will reproduce healthy small groups; healthy small groups will in turn reproduce
healthy churches.
4) _____________________________________________________________-Purpose- Ministry
"Prayer is the work and ministry of the Church". Without it we will fail.
5) __________________________________________________________-Purpose- Evangelism
God's future Kingdom has invaded the present for the purpose of gathering the lost, the broken,
the prodigals and the needy into loving relationship with Him.

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 45

6) ____________________________________________________ Purpose- Ministry/Discipleship
We are always to be being healed or healing others. It is the heart of the Father as expressed through
the life of Jesus to bring people into wholeness and maturity physically, emotionally, spiritually,
socially and financially.
7) ____________________________________________________- Purpose- Discipleship
"Every member is a minister" is the Biblical understanding of normative Christian experience.
We are brought into the family, healed up, built up, trained, equipped, and then sent out to give to
others what He has given to us--the love, life and ministry of Jesus.

8) ________________________________________________________________ of Jesus Christ."

This is how we know we are lovers of Christ: we obey his commands. (John 14:15; 1John 2:6;
Matt. 28:18, 19)

Conclusion: Faith For God's Church

Proverbs 19:21 - "Many are the plans in a man's heart but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."
Psalms 138:8 - The Lord will fulfill the/His purpose for me (us).
The Lord has promised that His glory will fill all the earth; He has chosen the Church to be the
vehicle for this mission. Churches built on His purposes will fulfill what they are made to be and
do. Let's go for it!!

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH

Every building is constructed to serve a specific purpose. Some are built to house travelers. We call
them motels or hotels. Some are built to manufacture products which we consume. We call these
buildings factories. One of the first things we should ask then is what do we want to do? How do we
need to construct the building to effectively achieve our purpose? Before anything else happens we
must know the reason for our existence.
Certain issues have arisen in the history of the Church which have caused us to lose our focus. Such
things as rationalism, humanism, and materialism have taken us on a detour from our appointed
direction. The Church's real purpose and reason for existence has, to a large extent, been lost. We
need to renew and sharpen our focus to see the purpose of the Church as the Scriptures present it.
The key to the preaching of Jesus was the recurring theme, "The Gospel of the Kingdom".
(Matthew 4:23; 9:35; Luke 4:43; 8:1). This was the central message of Jesus. Wherever He went,
He preached this MESSAGE (The WORDS of Jesus) and He demonstrated the reality of the
message with His MIRACLES (The WORKS of Jesus).
The idea of the Kingdom of God is ROOTED in the Old Testament. It was announced by the
prophets. They saw and understood it to be a day when man would live together in peace ( Isaiah
2:4; 11:6). During the time of the Divided Kingdom, the prophets began to talk about a time when
God would come and purge the world of evil and sin. This they called the DAY OF THE LORD.
This event would usher in a NEW AGE in which God would rule and bring about perfect peace.
Amos described this NEW AGE with terms which were con-non to everyday life (Amos 9:13-15).
Isaiah, on the other hand, used other worldly language to describe this NEW AGE (Isaiah 65:17).
What was rooted in the Old Testament was the concept of this coming Kingdom. The terms,
however, which the New Testament uses were not coined until the Intertestamental Period. During
this period a new way to express this NEW AGE occurred. It came to be known as the AGE TO
COME and the KINGDOM OF GOD.
The Hebrew worldview or mindset saw time on a linear basis. They saw time as continuing forever.
This view of unending time was divided into two stages: THIS AGE, which was evil, out of control,
controlled by a malignant being; and the AGE TO COME, which was good, harmonious, and to be
ruled by God. This AGE TO COME concept came out of Israel's need to understand their real life
experience. (Often experience preceded understanding). They were God's people, who had fallen
apart (Divided Kingdom) and had been led into captivity. Only partially had they been restored
(Restoration). Israel lived within the domination of other pagan kingdoms. The DAY OF THE
LORD which would usher in the AGE TO COME would be the time God would come and
vindicate His children. Jesus demonstrated this same worldview at Matthew 13:36-43. Paul also
uses this same terminology (Galatians 1:4; 1 Corinthians 2:6; Romans 12:2).
What was ROOTED in the Old Testament was REVEALED in the New Testament. As we said
earlier, the Kingdom was both the WORDS and WORKS of Jesus. The Kingdom of God is
correctly defined as the RULE or REIGN of God. It is God's authority to RULE. This idea is
demonstrated by the story at Luke 19:11-12 about the nobleman. As the story is read one can see
that the nobleman did not travel to another land to receive a REALM to rule over; he already had
that. His problem was that he wasn't a king. He went away to receive the authority to RULE. This is
precisely the meaning of the Kingdom; it is the RULE of God.

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 52

THE WORDS OF JESUS. The parables teach us concerning the Kingdom of God. This is what the
third teaching section of Matthew's gospel discloses to us (Matthew 13). The background of the
Jewish audience is helpful in understanding the teaching of Jesus about the Kingdom. The mindset
of the Jewish people was built on the attitude that the Messiah, the Anointed One who was to come,
would break into the world and would bring about the NEW AGE. They expected this to happen in
a military sense. John the Baptist foretold of the Coming One using this symbolism. When Jesus did
not live up to John's expectations, he sent his disciples to question Jesus concerning this issue. Jesus
did come preaching and demonstrating the Kingdom but folks simply did not understand. The
Kingdom was here but instead of destroying human institutions, it had come to attack the
sovereignty and rule of Satan. The parables were the tools which Jesus used to teach about the
Kingdom. The Jews expected one thing, the destruction of human kingdoms. They received
something else, the destruction of an evil supernatural kingdom. What they expected was the
Messiah to come and bring judgment. Jesus did not misplace that expectation; He simply taught that
it was yet future. Let's look at a quick summary of His teaching in Matthew 13.
THE SOWER - (Matthew 13:1-9/explained 13:18-23). This parable suggests that the Kingdom has
come into the world to be received by some and rejected by others.
THE WHEAT AND THE WEEDS - (Matthew 13:24-30/explained 13:36-43). This parable teaches
about judgment and separation of those who reject the Kingdom.
THE MUSTARD SEED - (Matthew 13:31-32). The concept to visualize here is the contrast
between the smallness and the largeness of the reality of the Kingdom. The presence of the Rule of
God now is only a foretaste of what it will be in its completeness.
THE LEAVEN - (Matthew 13:33). This parable tells us that the Rule of God is the power of
transformation.
THE TREASURE - (Matthew 13:44) and FINE PEARLS - (Matthew 13:45-46). In these two
parables the Kingdom is seen as something which is of inestimable value and should be sought over
all other possessions.
THE NET - (Matthew 13:47-50). Here the same concept is taught as in the wheat and weeds,
namely, the judgment and separation of those who reject the Kingdom. The parables (the WORDS
of Jesus) teach us in pictures what the miracles (the WORKS of Jesus) act out in reality for all to
observe.
THE WORKS OF JESUS. The miracles are the demonstration of God's RULE in power to set
things right, to make the old, new. The miracles should be understood from the point of view of
CONFLICT or ATTACK. Jesus and Satan meet at the very beginning of the ministry of Jesus.
Satan is viewed as a supernatural evil being who is the head of a host of inferior evil spirits called
demons. He is called the "prince of demons" (Mark 3:22). The New Testament views Satan as the
chief opposer to God's redemptive purposes. Jesus has come to do battle with him and bring the
Rule of God where the Rule of Satan had been. In the temptation story, Satan claimed a power over
the earth that even Jesus did not question. Paul calls him the "god of this age" (2
Corinthians 4:4). His activity is printed all over the pages of the Synoptic Gospels. The most
characteristic evidence of Satan's power in the New Testament is the ability of demons to demonize
man. One of the first encounters which Mark shares concerning Jesus, is His encounter with a
demonized man in the synagogue at Capernaum. At Luke 13:16 Satan is the one who has bound a
woman and made her look like a horseshoe for 18 years. Satan and his demonic force harassed
mankind in many ways. They caused physical ailments ( Matthew 9:32; 12:22); emotional ailments
(epilepsy, Matthew 17:15, 18); mental conditions (insanity - Mark 5). Jesus took Satan seriously.

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 53

He saw himself at war with the "strongman". (Mark 3:19b-30). Every time He expelled a demon,
He was winning the war against Satan and carving out the Rule of God in the world. POWER AND
AUTHORITY. At Luke 9:1 Jesus gave His disciples POWER (dunamis) and AUTHORITY
(exousia) to cure diseases and expel demons. According to Acts 1:8 everyone can receive the same
POWER (dunamis) from the Holy Spirit. POWER is the ability, strength or might to complete a
given task. AUTHORITY is the right to use the power God has given. The policeman on the corner
does not have the power to stop cars. He does, however, stop them. He does so by the authority
invested in him by a higher authority. We live between the times, between D-Day and V-Day, as
Oscar Cullman calls it. The D-Day battle occurred at the cross, while the V-Day will occur at the
second coming of Jesus. We live between these two great events, between the times. We have been
commissioned by Jesus to proclaim the good news (i.e. the Rule of God is available). He has also
instructed us to heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead, thus demonstrating that the Rule of
God is available. We are some of the time cast in the role of the Great American Hero, Superman,
but most of the time, however, we are simply Clark Kent. Once in a while, as God graces us with
one of His gifts or gracelets, we become Superman for the moment. At that point we can use the
power given to us because of the authority given to us by God. WE receive his power and authority
to use, as members of God's army, to continue the mopping-up exercise between D-Day and V-Day.
THE KINGDOM AND THE CHURCH. If the dynamic concept of the Kingdom is correct, (i.e. the
RULE of God) then the Kingdom is not the Church. The Church is the people of God who live
under and are governed by God's RULE. The Church is the community of the Kingdom but NOT
the Kingdom itself. We belong to the Kingdom but we are NOT the Kingdom. The Kingdom is the
RULE OF GOD. The New Testament does not equate believers with the Kingdom . The Kingdom
created the Church, and the Church witnesses to the presence of the Kingdom. The Church cannot
BUILD the Kingdom or BECOME the Kingdom. It does, however, witness to the acts of God's
Kingly rule as it occurred in the PAST, as it is occurring in the PRESENT, and as it will occur in
the FUTURE. The Church then is the INSTRUMENT of the Kingdom. We are instruments in that
the WORDS about the Kingdom are spoken through us and the WORKS of the Kingdom are
performed by us. The PURPOSE then of the Church is TO WITNESS ABOUT WHAT GOD HAS
SAID AND DONE (PAST), WHAT GOD IS GOING TO DO (FUTURE), AND WHAT GOD IS
DOING NOW (PRESENT). The Church's PURPOSE is to be the Instrument through which God
can SAY and DO what He desires for His world. That desire is to bring mankind to wholeness,
spiritually, physically, socially and emotionally. Our reason for existence then, our PURPOSE, is to
be the INSTRUMENTS through which God brings about His Rule on the earth. Remember, God
called us to be an ARMY - not an audience. The war is on! We need to "fight the good fight of
faith".

HEALING

A SHORT THEOLOGY OF HEALING

A. Healing and Proclamation of the Gospel are Tied
1. Matthew 10:6-10; Luke 9:1, 2; 10:8-12; Mark 6:7-13
2. Healing is not optional.
3. WORD and DEED are joined together.

B. Healing is Based on the Father's Compassion

1. Matthew 9:35-10:2; John 1 : 1 8 ; 14:31; 17:26
C. Healing Affects the Whole Person
1. Sozo (the main Greek word for "healing") = "salvation" to deliver, free, or to bring to
wholeness.
2. Implications:
a. God sees the "big picture"; therefore pressure to heal is put on Him; we simply obey.
b. Healing of the spirit comes where sin has caused spiritual sickness.
c. Healing of the effect of past hurts (i.e. inner healing) to emotional being.
d. Healing of the demonized and mental illnesses.
e. Healing of the body.
f. Healing of the dying and the dead.

D. Healing is in the Kingdom of God

1. How do we answer the question of "Why are not all healed?
2. Two polarities
a. Extreme Calvinism
b. Pentecostal view of "Healing is in the Atonement" - Is. 53:4; Matt. 8:17; I Pet. 2:24.
3. Kingdom healing
a. Miracles and signs are manifestations and a promise of the age to come (I Cor. 15:26;
Rev. 21:4; Rev. 7:16f - re: food miracles).
b. Casting out of demons signals God's invasion into Satan's realm (Matt. 12:29; Mark
3:27; Luke 11:21f; Jolun 12:31; Rev. 20:1ff).
c. Those not healed are the result of the "ebb and flow" of the kingdom (e.g. Mark 6:1-5;
Luke 4:1, 14) - i.e. the illnesses of Ephraphroditus, Trophimus, and Timothy came
probably at a low point in the ebb and flow while Acts 19:11 records extraordinary
miracles - probably one of the high points.

E. Final Note
All prayer for healing should result in the person being loved that has asked for prayer. We pray for,
believe for, and lay hands on for people to be healed but healing is in God's hands; thus the law of
love is the bottom line.

SERVANT EVANGELISM
OPENING CLOSED HEARTS TO GOD'S LOVE
By Steve Sjogren
To earn the right to speak words of love, we must first willingly demonstrate deeds of love with the
hurting people in our cities.
It was a Friday evening before Labor Day and rush hour traffic was backed up for nearly a mile at
the corner by our church, Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Cincinnati. The temperature was 95
degrees with matching humidity. About ten of us from the church quickly went into action to touch
several hundred hot, frustrated motorists with God's love. We iced down 400 soft drinks and set up
signs just down the road: "Free Drinks Ahead". As the cars came to the stop sign, we asked, "Would
you like diet or regular?" "Diet or regular what?" was the skeptical reply. "We're giving away free
drinks to show people God's love in a simple and practical way". "Why?" "Just because God loves
you". Reactions varied greatly--some people smiled, some shook their heads, several mouths
dropped open. Most were a little stunted to receive something for free. A UPS driver drove away
saying, "But I don't even know you guys. Why would you do this for me?" In less than an hour,
we spoke with about 600 people, gave away all the drinks on hand and even made it on a local radio
station's traffic report.
A Slow Start--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I met Christ in the revival atmosphere of the "Jesus People" movement in Southern California. A lot
of evangelism was going on, but most of us doing it at the time were high on enthusiasm and low on
understanding about how people come to Christ. We had an oversimplified picture of what bringing
someone into relationship with Christ involved. Our model for evangelism worked extremely well
in Southern California, but it depended upon highly gifted leaders doing evangelism in public
meetings. Little person-to-person evangelism was going on outside of corporate gatherings. We
naively thought we could reproduce the same approach elsewhere with identical effectiveness. We
joked that you could sneeze at meetings and a dozen people would accept Christ! It doesn't take a
rocket scientist to figure out God was doing a sovereign work of evangelism then. Doing
evangelism during the Jesus Movement was like fishing during a salmon run: About anyone with
minimal availability could "catch fish".
Today we are no longer fishing in a salmon run. The day of "easy evangelism" hasn't been with us
for more than a decade. People aren't nearly as open to listening to evangelistic appeals as they once
were. In their hearts, many non-Christians say, "you have no right to tell me about your God until
you have shown me you have integrity". The scandals of prominent leaders in the body of Christ
have made it more difficult than ever to share the gospel. For whatever reason, unchurched people
are jaded. It's tough sharing Jesus with skeptics.
Ten years after I came to Christ, I found myself in a very different spiritual environment than the
fertile fields of the Jesus Movement era. After receiving training at a large Vineyard church in
Southern California, I moved my family to Cincinnati, Ohio, to plant a new church. We began in
this conservative, Midwestern community with five people. Cincinnati is friendly, in it's own
skeptical way. New ideas don't catch on quickly here. That mindset prompted Mark Twain to write
over one hundred years ago, "When the end of time comes I want to be in Cincinnati, because
everything happens ten years later there".
During my first 18 months in Cincinnati, I shared my vision for planting a church with 1,000
people. Yet for all that effort we started our first Sunday with 35 people. That's enough rejection to
give Norman Vincent Peale a
Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 60
challenge. At that point we were unenthusiastic about evangelism. Mentioning the "E-word" caused
us to feel guilty and reminded us of our failure at reaching out to the community.

Seeing Their Pain-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One day while sitting at a restaurant, having just told a visitor our vision for starting a church--and
being rejected again--I felt the Lord speak to me: "If you will befriend my friends, then you'll have
more people than you know what to do with... "
Until that day, I wondered if there would be any people to pastor. Now God was saying I would
have more people than I knew what to do with if I would befriend His "friends".
I began to look in Scripture for the kinds of people Jesus spent his short ministry interacting with. I
began to see something new; though Jesus loved everyone, he apparently enjoyed spending the
better part of his time with three types of people: the poor, the sick and the lost. Even the apostles
carne from the hurting society. All the apostles came from Galilee, the most hurting part of
Palestine.
I began to see Jesus' friends as the ones who are in pain--pain from bad decisions they have made,
pain from rejection, and pain from living in a fallen world that knows little of God's acceptance,
forgiveness and love. Everyone has their own version of pain--those tension points that make life
somewhere between difficult and impossible to live.
I realized that almost no one is having a good time in life. I went to the mall one day to go people
watching. As I looked into the faces of person after person, I realized almost everyone is
experiencing a significant level of misery. Jesus desires to touch and heal their pain. Somehow my
job was to be around and minister to those people. But how? I'm too shy to go door knocking.
Besides, people seemed more skeptical than ever. I already had several hundred people tell me "no"
to the invitation of being involved in this new church.
Then the idea began to form. If we could somehow lighten some of the pain these people are going
through--even for a moment--maybe we would get their attention. By serving our way into their
hearts, maybe we could gain their ear.
As the idea of servant evangelism crystallized, we organized an "absolutely free car wash". We
stationed a couple of former cheerleaders on the corner with signs to direct dirty cars to the rest of
the people. We had several washers, some doing windows, some vacuuming, and a couple of
"designated evangelists" to share with people why we were doing this. Amazingly, many wouldn't
believe we would do something for free--no strings attached. The first car was a station wagon
driven by a single mom with six squirming kids. She cried as we shared with her and prayed for her.
The owner of the second car turned out to be a well-known Cincinnati businessman. We told him
we were doing this for free. He said, "That's nice..." As we finished he asked, "To whom shall I
make out my check?" "No sir," someone replied, "We aren't receiving any money for washing your
car. We did this just because God loves you". It was one thing to see the mother cry, but I wasn't
ready to see this powerful businessman wipe away the tears.
I believe he was touched because we went around all of his established defenses that had kept
people-and God away from his life. If we were to "battle" at a philosophical or theological level we
would not have gotten through to this sophisticate. In a sense we broke the rules and were not

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 61

"fighting fair". We sneaked in the back door of his life when he was least expecting it--his heart--
and made a significant impact.
When the afternoon was over, we had washed forty plus cars. Surprisingly, almost everyone
accepted prayer when we offered it. Our group stood in a circle, prayed and cried together. We
began to feel the pain of those we had served that day.
Since that time six years ago we have tried over forty creative outreaches. Almost all of them have
worked extremely well at putting us in touch with the community.
Reaching out to touch the community has been the key to the significant growth we have
experienced. Last year alone we touched over 60,000 people in our community. Our fellowship has
grown from 35 people six years ago to about 1,600 in three services on Sundays. We have also
planted six other fellowships in the Cincinnati area. What has happened here has caused us to see
evangelism with new eyes.

Seeing The "Process"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul's statement in I Corinthians 3:6 transformed our view of evangelism: "I planted, Apollo
watered, and God gave the increase..." Paul saw evangelism as a process, a view unlike our
American mindset that focuses mainly on "closing the deal". According to Paul's agricultural
analogy, harvesting comes after much planting and watering. Americans naturally value the harvest
aspect of evangelism. Our culture extols results and "the bottom line". Paul, however, valued the
early stages of evangelism groundwork, as well as the final loop of the evangelism process.
Paul states a general principle of farming: the more you plant and water, the more you will
eventually harvest. Because of the American church's credibility gap, we must first willingly
demonstrate love before we'll earn the right to share the words of love with our society. We must
learn to value what I call the "first 90%" of evangelism--the planting and watering--before we begin
to see significant harvesting.
I define evangelism in this simple way:
Deeds of God's love
+
Words of God's love
+
Time
Deeds of kindness and love give us entrance into people's hearts. We design our deeds to relieve
their pain and cause them to ask us, "Why are you doing this for me?" The deed of love or service is
the initial seed planted in the hearts of people. As we serve people we tell them of God's love by
sharing the gospel message to whatever level they are open. Then, after a season (that amount of
time is unique to each individual), the Holy Spirit begins to work on the hearts of those seekers.
This approach to evangelism puts the pressure squarely on God instead of pressuring people or a
program. I don't think people can take that sort of pressure--I have found that people become quilt
ridden when pressure for doing evangelism is put on their shoulders. We determine to have fun
when going out to serve the community

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 62

and leave the results with God. We have adopted a motto coined by George Bernard Shaw:
"Anything worth doing is worth doing wrong".
To date we have seen many come into relationship with Christ. By coming to "pre-Christians" with
a desire to serve them and relieve their pain we avoid battling in a mental or verbal arena and go
right to their hearts. I haven't seen fruit in trying to convert people at a head-to-head level--
apologetic, telling, arguing--but a heart-to heart witness is hard to resist. As we go for the hearts of
people we bypass their defenses.
Paul echoed this thought in Romans 2:4 "...it is the kindness of God that leads to repentance...".
Kindness is a key that opens hearts. Kindness opened one man's heart to God when we were doing a
"Free Lawn Care" outreach. We had loaded a couple of mowers and rakes into a truck and drove
around until we saw long grass. We approached his house and knocked on the door to tell him what
we were up to. Through the screen door this man barked, "What do you want?" We gave him the
brief explanation: without even looking up, his response was simply, "Yeah, whatever...".
He sat motionlessly in front of the TV watching a Red's baseball game. We mowed enthusiastically-
-we sometimes call it "Power Mowing" in the Vineyard--and finished in about thirty minutes. We
stopped by to tell him we were done and ask if we could pray for any needs in his life. He said he
didn't have any needs. As we stepped away from the door, one young man in the group said he was
sure this man was in great emotional need and that we ought to insist on praying for him. We turned
around and prayed a simple little prayer, "Come Holy Spirit and touch this man's pain, whatever it
is". The response was instant and surprising--he erupted in deep sobbing, grabbing the nearest
person in the circle and wetting his shoulder with tears for some minutes. As the crying died down,
he told us his son had been arrested the night before for stealing a car to support a drug habit. That
day God's presence and power penetrated this man's pain and isolation in a tangible way.. .because
we were willing to cut a little grass.

Getting Started----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You and your church can begin to reach out to your city in significant ways through Servant
Evangelism outreaches. This approach can be condensed in the phrase: "Low Risk-High Anointing"
activity.
Risk has to do with the "cost" of given outreach. Cost comes in a variety of ways other than money-
-emotional, time, energy. The "anointing" factor has to do with how much of God's blessing and
presence in the given outreach is necessary for something significant to happen. I have done
ministry that has been so heavily programmatic, there was little need for God to show up to ensure
success in the ministry. We need to sponsor outreaches that are easy enough for the average lay
person to succeed in and almost impossible to fail at. If our approach to ministry requires an
Olympic level of skill then we will have only a small percentage of our people reaching out.
In other words, it doesn't take much gifting, or much money, or even much boldness to begin to
affect large numbers of people. But as we step out to do these acts of love, God in His mercy shows
up in "high anointing" ways. So how do you get started in opening closed hearts to God's love?
First, begin to ask the Lord to show you the pain of your city------------------------------------------
Ask the Lord for the gift of knowing and identifying your community's pain. Every city is unique in
its problems, hurt and pain. What Cincinnatians feel as a need will differ from the needs of your
city. Cincinnati has long and wet winters that leave road salt on cars. During the cold weather
months we offer free de-salting washes. Cold weather also gives us a chance to give out free coffee

at grocery stores. There's a park in Toledo where many parents walk about with their families on
pleasant summer days. A Vineyard pastor there has photo teams that walk about the park offering to
take a picture of the families for free--"Just because God loves you". They place a sticker on the
back of the picture with the church name and phone number. I believe those families will save
pictures taken of them for years. Every time they look at their picture they will recall the kindness
of the Christians that served them.
One thing is for sure: As you begin to address that pain with the mercy and compassion of the Lord,
you will draw a crowd. Few of the unchurched are looking for church. Everyone is looking for relief
from their pain.
Second, begin to meet the practical needs of your city----------------------------------------------------
In other words, scratch them where they itch. Robert Schuller says, "Find a hurt and heal it". As you
begin to look at the needs in each stratum of your city, you'll begin to see some of what God sees.
A friend of mine pastors a church in a college town in Colorado. They do servant evangelism by
going door-to-door in the dorms offering to clean dorm rooms for free "just because God loves
you". They have a second outreach to the students of providing free tutoring to students and then
praying for success on the upcoming test.
Third, you step out first-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most pastors I know aren't natural evangelists. However, we have all been called to do the work of
an evangelist (I Timothy 4:5). Your people will listen to all you teach and talk about, but they really
won't do more than you do as the primary leader. By nature, pastors are often more Bible "studiers"
than Bible "doers". When I take personality inventories I consistently come up a borderline
introvert, but I find these low risk outreaches feasible for me.
I look forward to mobilizing more outreaches into the community. We are now using our small
groups as our primary force for doing these projects. Just think what could happen if it became
commonplace for each small group to do an outreach like that monthly. It's exciting to consider the
sort of impact a church could make if it's organized to serve it's way into the hearts of the
community.

Purpose: Fellowship, Worship
Key Verse: "Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are
members of God's very own family... and you belong in God's household with every other
Christian." - Eph. 2:19 (LB)
"In Christ we who are many form one body and each member belongs to all the others."
Rom. 12:5

We believe God desires the local body of Christ to grow in meaningful relationship and love
one for another; to do this requires a certain level of agreed upon commitment, trust,
accountability, and responsibility.
Circle of Commitment Targeted: Moving the Crowd Towards the Congregation
Identified by:
1) Commitment to Christ
2) Baptism
3) Completion of Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard (5 weeks, 2 hours each

good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him." - Acts 10:38
(NKJV)
"Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don't drift along taking everything for
granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere heresay, that
Christ is in you." - 2 Corinthians 13:5 (The Message Bible)
We believe God wants to bring wholeness and healing to his people who've come from broken
families and backgrounds. Healing, however, is both an ongoing process and is only a part of
God's intent to mature us into the likeness of his Son Jesus.

without, frilly alive like Christ." - Ephesians 4:11, 13 (Message Bible)
"We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do." - Ephesians. 2:10

of the Lord" Luke 4:18
We believe God is establishing His Kingdom reign and rule over Satan in the earth; the Lord has
chosen the Church as the primary means to break Satan's power. As we go to proclaim God's rule over
sin, death and darkness His power is released for ministry and service. We are called simply to speak
the words and to do the works Jesus did while on the earth, thus cooperating with Father to bring His
children into freedom. (John 5:19)
Circle of Commitment Targeted: Moving the Core toward the Community, Crowd, Congregation,
and Committed
Identified by:
1) Completion of Class 401: Discovering My Mission
2) Overseeing in a ministry capacity as the primary leader or is part of a recognized team-

C. The 3 Primary Vehicles for Transporting Our Strategy
#1__________________________________________________________________________
a. The Acts "20:20" Approach - (Paul speaking) "I have...taught you publicly and from
house to house."

b. Acts 2:46 - "Daily they met in the temple and from house to house."

c. Our Sunday service is to be a corporate gathering of all our body to celebrate God's
goodness. It is to intersect our society in a culturally relevant way so even unbelievers
can experience God's presence in the worship, the fellowship of believers together, the
preaching of the Word, and the prophetic prayer and healing ministry. The Bible
declares that in such a celebration service unbelievers will be saved. (c.f. 1 Cor. 14:24,
25; John 17:23)

The priority of the Sunday service cannot be understated or minimized since worship
"releases" God to reveal himself to us and thus do his "Plan A" in our midst (2 Chr. 22;
John 4). Thus we as a body are called to "prepare him a dwelling place" where he might be
pleased to "hang out". When God's presence "hangs out", freedom of every kind is
released (1 Cor. 3:17). During the week we are individually to do this but Sundays and at
other large group gatherings we replace our individualistic priorities for the corporate
priority of worship unto the Lord.

c. Our small groups are the backbone of the church. It is in the home, office, or other
more intimate settings where the biblical priorities of fellowship, ministry (healing),
discipleship, and training can best take place.

Small groups are like families in that they are to provide loving care and acceptance; here
the blessing of the Father can be more individually released so one's spiritual identity and
gift-mix can be identified, nurtured and released.

Small groups are also like compact fighting units where one can be trained in safety,
provided for when in need (Acts 2:44, 45), and set loose to undo Satan's works of darkness
(Acts 10:38).

In short we believe that a person's spiritual maturity is more greatly enhanced by heartfelt
participation in a small group. We even go so far as to say that one will most likely become
"spiritually dwarfed" and kept back from God's best without the meaningful relationship
and accountability a small group provides.

a. Key verse: 2 Timothy 2:2 (Paul speaking) "And the things you have heard me say in the
presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach
others."

b. Training in informal, inservice, and formal environments.

• "Informal Training" happens in small groups and/or one-on-one.
• "Inservice Training" happens in the "hands-on" doing of ministry.
• "Formal Training" happens in the classroom usually with curriculum.

c. The need to be a continual learner is acute in the body of Christ. When you stop learning you
stop growing. Thus we believe that our ongoing educational (formal) track of classes
is necessary to all Vineyard participants. The best kind of class incorporates both the
knowledge (facts and comprehension) and the hands on experience.
The Life Development Process classes are the basic educational expressions of the priority in
our body. These classes are required of all persons desiring to move forward into ministry
through the Vineyard.

Other important strategy vehicles:

• V.A.L.T. (Vineyard Advanced Leadership Training) This is a once a month meeting open to
those who've completed class 301 and who are overseeing or leading a ministry at Vineyard.
The meeting includes worship, testimonies, training, and personal
ministry.

VII. Our Structure
Introduction
While we all know the wrong kind of structure in an organization can be cumbersome and hinder
growth, we must understand structure is still necessary and a gift from God. Structure is like the
skeletal bones of our body upon which our skin lives and has form. Without this important
structure our bodies would be an incredibly chaotic, lifeless pile of flesh.

So it is with the Church; without the leadership, membership, and the heart standards for these
entities, a church would flounder and fall.
A. Our Leadership
1. Heart Standards
a. Key Verse: Mark 10:41-45 "...Instead whoever wants to become great among you
must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the
Son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a
ransom for many.

b. Key Verse: Philippians 2:5-7 "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ
Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God
something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness."

c. Servant leaders must...

be teachable, able to receive correction.
be flexible and able to flow with unforeseen circumstances.
have integrity and keep true to themselves and to their commitments.
be willing to serve in some of the "lowest" places.
have a heart to love God above all others.
be accountable so as to avoid traps of Satan.
be gifted at the level of influence to which one is released.

d. Servant leaders...
don't force people into submission but through their own lifestyle bring others
into active participation in the life and ministry of Christ and his church.
have a desire to understand the hurts, pains, joys and temptations, and real needs
of the people they are serving.
are team players and seek to see the ministry go forward through the team he or
she builds or through others.
seek to develop others to lead rather than do the ministry by themselves.
are models for others to follow. They are to "set an example for others in speech,
in life, in love, in faith, and in purity". (I Timothy 4:12) No one's gifts or abilities
can make up for a lifestyle that betrays ones call from the Lord.

e. Spiritual Authority as Servanthood and Sanctification

Reference: Tale of Three Kings

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 79

2. The ______________________________Challenge Of Leadership
a. Matthew 9:36-38 "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the
Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

b. II Timothy 2:2 "The things you have heard me say in the presence of many
witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."

c. Salem - 128,000 unchurched (extended boundaries) _ 1000 (people an

evangelical church can service generally speaking) = 128 new churches
needed.

d. The US? The Nations?

3. The Definition of Leadership

"A leader-is a person (1) with a God given capacity and (2) with God given
responsibility to influence (3) a specific group of God's people (4) toward God's
purpose for the group."

B. Understanding Vineyard Leadership Basics

1. Church Government
a. Present Day Church Government
1) Presbyterian: Board (Presbytery) decides issues including who is Pastor.
2) Episcopal: Priest/pastor is ultimately responsible for final decisions.
3) Congregational: People decide; vote for Pastor.

b. Vineyard - Fluidity of what circumstances require - "There is no form or

order to God's government; there is only a man with a contrite heart." –
Presently Episcopal/Presbyterian mix.

2. The Role Of The Pastor

a. Prayer and the Word - Acts 6:3,4 "We will...give our attention to prayer and
the ministry of the word."

b. Equipping - Ephesians 4:11, 12 "It was he who gave...pastors and teachers to

prepare God's people for works of service... ."

c. Training and Releasing - II Timothy 2:2 "The things you have heard me say
in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be
qualified to teach others."

3. Financial Integrity and Philosophy

a. Financial spending should reflect ministry values. 50% Pastoral/Equipping
Staff; 25% Buildings/Opperations; 25% Giving - Benevolence, Missions,
Outreach, Training.

b. Biblical Basis For Church Finances

1) Staffing Pastors and Leaders - I Corinthians 9:14; I Timothy 5:18
2) Giving to those in need - Acts 2:45, 4:34, 35; James 1:27
3) Tithing rooted in the Fatherhood of God - Malachi 3:6-12; Numbers
18:21; Genesis 14:20, 28:22; Hebrews 7:4-10; Matthew 23:23, 24;
Luke 11:42

5. Local Pastoral Accountability

D. Our Church Family

1. What it Means to be a Member
a. Ephesians 2:19 "...you are members of God's very own family ...and you
belong in God's household..."

b. We are called not only to ____________________ but __________________.

Romans 12:10 ~ "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love."

c. "Membership" today usually means paying dues, performing meaningless

rituals, and ridiculous rules and having your name on a roll card somewhere.

d. Biblical "membership" however meant to be a _____________ ____________

__________________ of a body that can't live apart from other believers in a
local church (Rom. 12:45, 1 Cor. 6:15, 1 Cor. 12:12-27).

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page – 81

e. Detached organs attempting to live apart from the body shrivel and die; so it is
with Christians who are uncommitted to any specific congregation.

f. Membership, then is an ___________________________ by a group of

believers to know and love each other, to serve the rest of the Body, and
willingly contribute their spiritual gifts to the Body. "Bottom line" –
membership = The giving of one's time, money, and energy (T.M.E.) to the
cause of Christ through committed relationship with a local body of believers.

2. The Benefits of "Biblical Membership"

a. It identifies a person as a genuine, growing believer (Eph. 2:19, Rom. 12:5).

b. It provides a ______________________ to support and encourage us in our

walk with Christ (Gal. 6:1-2, Heb. 10:24-25).

c. It provides us with a place to and our gifts in ministry (I Cor. 12:4-27).

d. It places us under the _________________________of godly leaders (Heb.

13:17, Acts 20:28-29).

e. It gives us the _________________________ we need to grow (Eph. 5:2 1).

3. Declaring The Call To Membership

a. A "declaration of membership" to a local body of believers is an ________sign

or statement of the _________ _____________ _____________taking place.
This "stake-in-the ground" experience can be beneficial and edifying to the
person participating in it. While it is not required by us, we do strongly
encourage you to pray about it and consider participating in it.

b. Making agreements or commitments in Bible times often entailed having signs

or symbols to remind the parties involved of the commitment they had made
(cf. Genesis 31:45 Jacob and Laban; I Samuel 18:1-5 David and Jonathan; Acts
21:18-24 Paul's vows).

c. Some Options to Declare The Call To Membership at the Salem Vineyard

Reading, praying over and signing the Vineyard Family Agreement (VFA)
Journaling a prayer of commitment to God
Share with another person regarding the commitment you are making and
have them pray with you.
Post your written commitment or the VFA somewhere you frequently pass
by - Others ?

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 82

d. If we commit ourselves to follow and obey Jesus regarding what He asks us to
do in relating to and serving in the Body of Christ, we have His personal
guarantee to give us the ________________ and ________________to do it.
(cf. Acts 5:32; II Cor. 3:17, 18; Hebrews 13:5, 6, 20-21; II Peter 1:3-11)

The Vineyard Family Agreement

Having received Christ as my Lord and Savior and been baptized, and being in
agreement with Salem Vineyard’s purposes, strategy, and structure, I now feel led
by the Holy Spirit to unite with the Vineyard church family. In doing so, I commit
myself to God and to the other members to do the following by God's
empowering grace:

1. I will protect the unity of my church

...by acting in love toward other members. .by refusing to gossip.
...by following the leaders.
...by submitting to church discipline if needed.

"So let us concentrate on the things which make for harmony, and on
the growth of our fellowship together" (Romans 14:19 PHILLIPS).

"Have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with
all your heart" (1 Peter 1:22 TEV).

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only
what is helpful for building others up according to their needs" (Ephesians
4:29).

"Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you
as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work, will be a
joy, not a burden, for that would be no advantage to you" (Hebrews 13:17).

2. I will share the responsibility of my church

...by praying for its growth.
...by inviting the unchurched to attend.
...by warmly welcoming those who visit.

"To the church--... We always thank God for you and pray for you constantly"
(1 Thessalonians 1:1, 2 LB).

"The Master said to the servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes, and
urge the people there to come so my house will be full" (Luke 14:23 NCV).

"So, warmly welcome each other into the church, just as Christ has warmly
welcomed you; then God will be glorified" (Romans 15:7 LB).

Class 101: Discovering Life in the Vineyard Page - 84

3. I will serve the ministry of my church
...by discovering my gifts and talents.
...by being equipped to serve by my pastors.
...by developing a servant’s heart.

"Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you.”
(I Peter 4:10 PHILLIPS).

"[God] gave…some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and

teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of
Christ my be built up.” (Ephesians 4:11, 12).

"Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the
interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who… [took on] the very nature of a servant." (Philippians 2:3, 4, 7).

2. I will support the testimony of my church

...by attending faithfully.
...by living a Godly life.
...by giving regularly.

"Let us not give up meeting together…but let us encourage one another."

(Hebrews 10:25).

"Whatever happens, make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the
gospel of Christ." (Philippians 1:27 PHILLIPS).

"Each one of you, on the first day of each week, should set aside a specific
sum of money in proportion to what you have earned and use it for the
offering." (I Corinthians 16:2 LB).

"A tenth of [all your] produce…is the Lord’s, and is holy." (Leviticus 27:30
NCV).

Recognizing that I can only do the above through the power of God’s Holy Spirit
and that when I fail I can readily avail myself of God’s forgiveness extended to me
through Christ’s sacrifice and righteousness, I now sign this agreement.
