PASSAGE 1
PLASTIC AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Plastic is a material we use every day. The first plastics were made more than 100 years ago from parts of plants. Plastics are now made from oil,
coal and natural gas. We are using up these things so fast that the Earth’s supplies may run out. Because of this, scientists are investigating new ideas for
making plastics from plants such as sweet potato, bamboo and flax.
Things made from plastic can be useful for people but bad for the planet. Some plastics can last for a long time without wearing out, and can be
difficult to get rid of when they are not needed. They can remain in rubbish dumps called landfill sites for hundreds of years. Landfills can be smelly,
ugly, and harmful to our planet.
Recycling is a good way to get rid of unwanted plastics. Recycled waste materials can be used again to make new products. This can be difficult as
different types of plastic need to be recycled in different ways. Some kinds of plastics can be melted down and used to make new things such as bags and
bottles. Others can be made into fibres (strands of material) for clothing.
Another way to protect the environment is to use canvas bags for shopping rather than plastic ones. A lot of plastic objects can also be reused.
Plastic bottles can be refilled many times, rather than throwing them away once they are empty. Unwanted plastic goods such as CDs and toys can be
sold or given away to charity shops.

Urbanization programmes are being carried out in many parts of the world, especially in densely populated religions with limited land and
resources. It is the natural outcome of economic development and industrialization. It has brought a lot of benefits to our society. However, it also poses
various problems for local authorities and town planners in the process of maintaining sustainable urbanization, especially in developing countries.
When too many people cram into a small area, urban infrastructure can’t be effective. There will be a lack of livable housing, energy and water
supply. This will create overcrowded urban districts with no proper facilities.
Currently, fast urbanization is taking place predominantly in developing countries where sustainable urbanization has little relevance to people's
lives. Their houses are just shabby slums with poor sanitation. Their children only manage to get basic education. Hence, the struggle for survival is
their first priority rather than anything else. Only when the quality of their existence is improved, can they seek for other high values in their life.
Thus, sustainable urbanization in different regions should start from different levels. For more developed regions, the focus could be on achieving
a more sustainable urban life. But for less developed regions, urban development should really start with the provision of the basic human needs such as
sufficient energy, clean water, housing with proper sanitation, and access to effective social infrastructure.

Marriage nowadays is a choice people make on their own. But this has not always been the case in society. Thousands of years ago, there were
fewer people living in the world. The average lifespan was shorter than it is today. There were many wars, many illnesses, and people had to protect
themselves by making more children while they were still young. The parents lived through their children.
Marriage was not so much a romantic love story but a business transaction. Most marriages were arranged between parents while their children
were still very young. It was the customs that the fathers chose who their children were going to marry, and, most importantly, they chose the
bridegroom very well. Usually, it was someone who came from a good family or who was rich. It was unlikely that people married outside their social
class.
The practice of arranged marriages is still common in some countries in the Middle East, such as India or Pakistan. Here, social classes are still
strongly divided and very well kept. Often, however, arranged marriages are a sign that people do not want to let go of the past. The past gives them
comfort and security in an ever-changing world.
The 20th century saw marriages opening up. But marriage and family still played an important role in society. In the 50s, families were very
closely knit and tight since the Second World War had done a lot of damage to society. A traditional nuclear family consisted of a working father and
stay-at-home mother, as well as their two or three children. Divorce was frown upon, and many women stayed in an unhappy marriage out of shame to
ask for a divorce.
The feminist movement of the 70s brought an end to this situation. Unfortunately, a large number of marriages end in divorce nowadays. Also
more children are born out of wedlock since it is no longer shameful to give birth without being married. In fact, many people choose to stay single or
get married in their late thirties. Often, marriages are common-law, with two people sharing the same house and bank account without being formally
married. There are a lot of single parents raising their children, while countries like Canada, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands have recently legalized
gay marriages.

PASSAGE 4
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions
The seashore or coastline is the unique area where seawater borders land to create a diverse and very important ecosystem. It is special in that the
freshwater carried along by rivers and streams flows into the ocean and mixes with salt water to provide rich nutrients and food to a variety of marine
plants and animals. The wildlife along the coast is part of a never-ending food chain as each tiny insect depends on its nourishment on other even smaller
creatures; therefore, any human interference in the life cycle of the seashore will cause irreplaceable damage to the environment in the long run.
Seashores are ever-changing environments that depend on the constant movement of tidal waves. When the sea rises and drowns the land, there is
high tide, while the reverse is a low tide. The area of the seashore that is submerged during high tides and above water is called the inter-tidal zone.
Subtidal zones are always under water. Both these areas, as well as the upper shores support an abundance of marine wildlife. Several crabs and prawns
feed on seaweed, while humans also use this plant as food, fertilizer or medicine. Sea otters often wrap their bodies with seaweed before dozing off so as
not to accidentally move into the ocean while sleeping.
Other fascinating creatures are sea anemones, sponges and corals, which may look like delicate and colourful flowers, but are actually animals.
Anemones catch and eat other animals with their parts like flowers, while corals are indeed hardened colonies of marine creatures, which offer rich
feeding grounds for fish and also regulate the water’s carbon dioxide content.
Seashores are popular areas for people to come and collect shells, which used to provide protection for soft-bodied creatures called mollusks.
Besides mollusks, people also gather sea urchins, which look like balls covered with many long and sharp needles. The small sea urchins use their
needles to scrape and dig holes inside rocks, where they lay their eggs. These eggs are a very sought-after restaurant delicacy.
Seashores are a haven for a variety of birds and mammals. Many seabirds live in large colonies on rocky cliffs. Each bird species builds its nest at a
different height, where it gathers in spring and early summer to lay eggs. As soon as fall arrives, cliff birds abandon their nests and migrate to warmer
climates. Human settlements have wreaked havoc amongst many bird species by destroying nests or hunting them down.
