Imagine t hat you are a shallow wat er scuba diving inst ruct or

You are t aking your st udent s for t heir final diving class

You put up t he gear, you give t he inst ruct ions…

And you dive wit h t he group

10 feet ...

20 feet ...

30 feet ...

30 feet was t he dept h you had in mind for t he class

But since it ’s t he last class, your st udent s want t o go deeper

You oblige

You go furt her deep

40 feet ...

50 feet ...

You reach 60 feet !!

That ’s t he maximum you have gone personally as a diver and as an inst ruct or

But your st udent s want more

They are enjoying t he experience

They urge you t o go deeper

You are in a dilemma….

“Should I take them deeper even though I have never gone that deep?”

Your st udent s insist

They are ready t o t ake t he chance

Can you take them really that deeper?

Hell NO!!
You cannot t ake t hem deeper

Why?

Because you have not experienced those depths yourself

You don’t know t he wat er pressure at t hose dept hs

You don’t know how rapidly oxygen will get deplet ed at t hose dept hs

So you say NO!!

And don’t worry. You did t he right t hing!

This is t rue when it comes t o managing t eams as well

A great leader always coaches t he t eam members t o help t hem grow and succeed

However, real transf ormation happens only when you can coach your t eams deep enough...

..Deep enough t o help t hem shift  mindset s, beliefs, t hinking pat t erns

But you cannot coach your teams deep enough, if

YOU have not been coached powerfully
Just like t he scuba inst ruct or, who cannot t ake st udent s t o dept hs where he/she has not gone before

This is a very import ant dist inct ion in leadership coaching.

Infact , my own journey int o coaching began when I had t he opport unit y t o work wit h my own coach during my
corporat e career
