Abstract:
The paper attempts to investigate urban design efforts by reviewing case studies. The paper
puts forth a critical study of urban case studies for the application of urban design principles.
The study reviews how application of urban design principles and theories in practice help to
generate citizen pride and stewardship which are the key goals of urban design.
Keywords: Urban design, citizen pride, stewardship
Introduction
Urban Design is tool which shapes a city and citizen behaviour. Appropriate amalgamation of
the built space, public spaces, amenities and the transport system creates liveable, healthy and
sustainable cities. Urban design principles are discussed and highlighted in various ways by
many Urban Designers and City planners. According to Kevin Lynch, elements of help in
creating the image of a city. Character, movement, adaptability in elements such as buildings,
streets and landscape go to make a successful urban design as per Albandari A. Urban design
is the thread which connects the citizens to the city, built spaces and transportation, buildings
to nature. It leads to idealistic space making, economic up gradation and citizen pride. All
urban design efforts aim to meet the needs of the community and the city.
Carefully selected case study demonstrates the various aspects which make urban design
successful. These case study examples are from vibrant urban cities with motivated and
opinionated citizens. The process and strategies of policy thinking and actual action on site
are exhibited in these case examples.

Flyover in the busy area of Hadapsar of Pune is transformed into a large art installation. The
art installation by local artists gives the passer-by citizens an experience of being part of the
art scene. It has generated employment opportunity for local artisans. This instils citizen pride
which in turn encourages stewardship. Urban Design principles such as Design, Pedestrian
access, Mobility, Identity and attraction, Affordability and Engaged community are addressed
by this urban effort of the large art installation.

Local authorities initiated uplifting the roads and streets to accommodate the citizens’
aspirations. Public participation was sought with regular interactions and interviews of the
different stakeholders. The streets today have cycle lanes, public seating areas, pedestrian
walkways and street furniture which addressed the existing features appropriately. It is seen
that the citizens take pride in keeping the area clean.

It is seen that the efforts by the local authorities and the applied urban design strategies aim
for more attractive public places which initiate collaborations between the different stake
holders for mutual and longterm benefits. City streets, city square, plaza, upgrading unused
built edifices, beautifying transport infrastructures are seen as investments to attract
commercial activity and auto-maintenance. Careful efforts of urban design influence citizen
friendly outcomes which develop a strong understanding between all the stakeholders.

Conclusion
Efforts of the Local authorities with the help of public participation can strengthen the urban
experiences in a city by appropriately upgrading the underused dilapidated spaces of the core
areas of urban cities to usable and vibrant public precincts. This would in turn reinforce
citizen pride and stewardship to resolve the issue of maintenance in urban areas. Critical
application of the Urban design principles with contextual references would result in lively,
hygienic and safe public spaces which help promote economic stability of the city. Senior
politicians and real estate developers can facilitate mixed use development generating
economic activity.
