I. ELEMENTS OF ART

The elements of art are line, shape, form, space, color and texture. The elements
of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art.1

1. LINE
Line is a one-dimension path made by a moving point through space.2
• used to define the edges of shapes and forms 3
• used to communicate an idea or feeling 4
• used to add structure to a composition, frame information and divide information 5

2. SHAPE
Shapes are flat and enclosed two-dimensional (length and height) figure formed when
a line connects to itself.3
• used to add interest and substance to a piece of graphic work
• used to decorate, they can be symbolic and can be used to create patterns and
textures5

Two types of shapes:


• Geometric shapes are the shapes that can be drawn using a ruler or compass.
Whether simple or complex, these shapes produce a feeling of control or order.
• Organic shapes are shapes that can be drawn free hand or shapes found in nature.
Organic shapes wether simple or complex produce a natural feel. 5

3. FORM
Forms are three-dimensional (length, width, height) and can be viewed from many
angles.1 Spheres, boxes, and pyramids are forms.2 Form can be actual or implied.
• Actual form, is a work that you can see from all sides. sculpture
• Implied form, created with shading and modeling.3

4. SPACE
Space is used to create an illusion of depth within an artwork. It refers to the positive
and negative space between, around or within objects.1
• Space creates the visual essence and dynamic of a composition.4

5. COLOR
Color is light reflected off of objects. White is pure light; black is the absence of light.2
• used as a mechanism of organization
• create impact and create a specific look and feel in a piece of graphic design work. 4

Characteristics of color:
1. hue - the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.
2. value - how light or dark is the color
3. intensity - how bright or dull is the color

Primary colors are the only true colors (red, blue, and yellow). All other colors are
mixes of primary colors.
Secondary colors are two primary colors mixed together (green, orange, violet).
Intermediate or tertiary colors are made by mixing a primary and secondary color.
Some examples of intermediate colors are yellow green, blue green, and blue violet.
Complementary colors are located directly across from each other on the color wheel
Complementary pairs contrast because they share no common colors. For example,
red and green are complements, because green is made of blue and yellow.2

6. TEXTURE
Texture is the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel. Textures can be rough or
smooth, soft or hard.1 Textures are created by using patterns.2
• used to create a visual tone
• can influence the look and feel of a piece of graphic design work
• used to attract or repel interest to an element depending on the pleasantness of the
texture.1
There are two types of texture in art:
1. Actual Texture is the way the surface of an object actually feels.
2. Visual Texture is the way the surface of an object appears to feel3

II. PRINCIPLES OF ART


1. BALANCE
Balance is the distribution of visual weight in an artwork.4 In design, one should attempt
to place visual elements in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement, or particular
arrangement to fulfill a purpose or achieve a particular look and feel.1
• used to add stability, add structure, create emphasis and to create dynamics1

Understanding these three types of balance will help achieve the right type of visual
effect in your design.1

2. CONTRAST
Contrast is the difference between elements in a composition. This can happen
through a variety of elements such as value change, size difference, etc. 1
• we use contrast to generate impact, highlight importance, create exciting graphics
and create visual interest and dynamics.2

3. EMPHASIS
Emphasis is the creation of a focal point in an artwork.
• Emphasis draws the viewer’s eye to particular areas of the artwork first. 1

4. UNITY
Unity is the wholeness that is achieved in a piece of art through the effective use of the
Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, to create a feeling of completeness. It can
also be referred to as Harmony.3
A unified artwork will just look right, complete, and pleasing. Unity is not necessarily
just a repetition of the same element over and over again, but it is the pleasing combination
of elements to create the big picture.4

5. PROPORTION
Proportion is a measurement of the relative size and quantity of elements within an
artwork. Scale is similar to Size. Size is how large or small an item is, while Scale is the
relationship, or comparison, of the size of two or more items in an artwork. 1
• scale can be used to illustrate sizes of objects in real-life

it can also be used as a form of art exaggeration.2

6. RHYTHM (Repetition, Pattern, Movement)


Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of
elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
RHYTHM is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to
create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like
music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential. 3

7. MOVEMENT
Movement in a work of art that create a sense of action or implied motion.4 Movement
is how the eye travels through an artwork.5
