MODULE 6: CHECK IN ACTIVITY 2

A health researcher is interested in comparing 3 methods of weight loss: low calorie diet, low fat
diet and high exercise regimen. He selected 15 moderately overweight subjects and randomly
assigned 5 to each weight-loss program. The following weight reductions (in lbs) were observed
after a one-month period. Test the hypothesis that the extent of weight reduction does not differ
by type of weight-loss program.

FAT CALORIE REGIMEN

FORMULATION OF THE HYPOTHESES:

Ho: The extent of weight reduction does not differ by type of weight-loss program.
Ha: The extent of weight reduction differs by type of weight-loss program.

SIGNIFICANCE LEVEL:
Alpha = 0.05

COMPUTATION FOR F: (used Excel)

ANOVA TABLE:

Sources of Sum of df MSS F-value

Variations Squares

Between 11.2 2 5.6 3.57

Within 18.2 12 1.57

Total 30 14

DECISION RULE:
Since F-value = 3.57 < F crit = 3.89 at 0.05 significance level, do not reject Ho or accept the Ho

CONCLUSION:
The extent of weight reduction does not differ by type of weight-loss program.
