Abstract- In this paper, a new design of a compact ultra-

wideband monopole antenna covering 3.1-12 GHz with four
band-notched characteristics is presented. The proposed antenna
utilized three circular split-ring and a square split-ring to create
four electromagnetic interference notched-bands including
WLAN(5.15-5.35 GHz and 5.725-5.825 GHz), C-band(3.7-4.2
GHz) and X-band(7.3-7.8 GHz) satellite communication system
and . Simulated results show that the designed antenna with
compact size of 26h30 mm2 has an impedance of 3.1-12 GHz for
VSWR less than 2 except the four frequency stop-bands to the
UWB communication system. The results show that proposed
antenna are very suitable for various portable UWB system.

I. INTRODUCTION
since the federal communications commission(FCC)
authorized the unlicensed use of 3.1-10.6 GHz spectrum for
commercial use in 2002[1], UWB monopole antennas have
gained more and more attention due to its advantages such as
high-speed date rate transmission in short range, extremely
wide operation bandwidth, low cost, low profile and ease of
fabrication etc. However, the UWB antennas designers are Fig. 1 geometry of the four-band-notched UWB antenna

Fig. 2 shows the basic UWB antenna's VSWR. It can be
seen the basic antenna can operate at the whole UWB range
very well. As is known to us, to obtain multiple notched-bands,
to embed multiple circular split-ring on the radiators is
available[8]. However, it is difficult to designed multiple
notched-bands respectively for the coupling effect of the split-
rings. Based on the above analysis, we consider embedding
three circular split-rings on the radiator at the same time, just
adjust the placement and the radius of the circular split-rings,
the corresponding three notched-bands(WLAN, C-band
satellite communication systems) are obtained easily. Fig. 3
shows the VSWR of the tri-band-notched UWB antenna using
three circular split-rings, it can be seen that every notched-
band's VSWR is more than 7.5

antenna's radiation, to embed split-rings in the ground plane
can also obtain notched-bands characteristics[6]. Based above
analysis we, embed a square split-ring onto the ground plane
expect to obtain another notched-band characteristic. Fig. 4
shows the VSWR of the proposed four-band-notched UWB
antenna. By adjusting the gap of the square split-ring, The
center frequency of the notched-band of can move and finally
get right place. The whole optimal parameters for the
proposed antenna are H=30 mm, H1=12.5 mm, H2=17 mm,
H3=6.2 mm, W=26 mm, W1=2.8 mm, W2=22 mm, W3=2 mm,
W4=0.6 mm, g=0.2 mm, g1=0.6 mm, g2=1.2 mm, g3=0.4 mm.
III. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
Fig. 5 shows the simulated maximum realized gain of the
proposed UWB antenna. It can be seen that the gain of the
proposed antenna decrease at these four band-notched
frequencies and have high values away from them. Therefore,
the proposed UWB antenna are good enough for UWB
