SEMINAR ON TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE

ABSTACT : Light transmission [Green buildings ] and aesthetical appearance the

two main features which provide the optical fibres to concrete and make the
formation of translucent concrete . Translucent concrete is a concrete based material
with light-transmissive properties, obtained due to embedded light optical elements
like Optical fibres in it. Light is conducted through the stone from one end to the
other. Translucent concrete is also used in the smart construction. Therefore the fibres
have to go through the whole object. Transparent concrete [LITRACON] is also
known as the translucent concrete and light transmitting concrete because of its
properties. It is used in fine architecture as a facade material and for cladding of
interior walls. Light transmitting concrete is one of the fibre reinforced concrete
which is used for aesthetic application by incorporating the optical fibres in concrete.
Optical fibres are one which helps for transmission of light through fibre. The end-lite
type of fibre is used to increase the aesthetic appearance of the concrete.
Concrete has been used since Roman times for the development of Infrastructure and
housing but its basic components have remained the same. Three ingredients make up
the dry mix: coarse aggregate, consisting of large pieces of material i.e. Stones or
gravel, fine aggregate, sand, Cement, very fine powder material that binds the mix
together when water is added.
In this paper the main work done is we used the plastic optical fibres of different
diameter ranging from 0.5mm to 3.0mm and tests were mainly done by Casting
methods and light transmission by varying the percentage of plastic optical fibres in
concrete. In initial stage the cost of translucent concrete is high as there is the use of
plastic optical fibre [To study the properties and to compare the compressive strength
between normal mix concrete with optical fibre and normal mortar with optical fibre
after 7 days, 14 days and 28 days respectively] but in long run a lot of energy
[artificial energy] will be saved as these fibres will directly allow natural sun light
inside the buildings.

Key Words : Green buildings, translucent concrete, Aesthetical appearance, ,

Hollow Optical plastic fibres, Self- compacting concrete.
