Experiment no. 2
Object- To study the effect of solvent on absorption spectrum of phenol.
Requirements-
Glassware required-Pipette, Beakers, vol. flask (100ml).
Chemical required-Phenol, Carbon tetrachloride
Principle-
Quantum theory for electronic transition can be explained by following
equation.-
∑1-∑0=hv
∑1-∑0=hc/λ, v=c/λ
∑1-∑0=hc/λ
Where-
∑1=1stExcitational, vibrational energy level
∑0=Ground state energy level
h= Plank’s constant
v= Velocity of light
λ = Wavelength
Procedure for the determination-
(1) Prepare a 0.002% solution of phenol in distilled water and
carbon tetrachloride, separately.
(2) Measure the absorbance of each solution over wavelength(λ)
200nm to 400nm using 1 cm cell cuvette and appropriate
solvent as blank.

(3) Record λ maxof phenol in each solvent and explain change in λ

max.
