2. Thoracic 3. Lumbar
4. Sacrum 5. coccyx
Question 2: Define the following terms: Satisfactory response
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer(s): Comment:
Hypertrophy – an increase or growth in muscle cells

Atrophy – a decrease/degeneration of muscle cells

Agonist – a muscle who’s contraction moves part of the body directly

Antagonist – a muscle that produce opposing torque to the agonist muscles

Stabiliser – stabiliser muscles help coordinate and stabilise the movement in

addition to restricted movement of joints to help prevent injury during movement

Isometric – a contraction of a muscle whereby the muscle doesn’t noticeably

change length

Eccentric – a contraction of a muscle whereby the muscle is lengthened when

contracting

Concentric – a contraction of the muscle whereby the muscle is shortened

Question 3: Identify the muscles that form the following muscle group(s): Satisfactory response
A) Quadricep Yes ☐ No ☐
B) Hamstring
C) Hip Flexor

E) Calf
Answer(s): Comment:
Quadricep –
Rectos femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius
Hamstring – Biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus

Hip Flexor – rectos femoris, iliacus, psoas, iliocapsularis, sartorious

Rotator Cuff – Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Subscapularis

Calf – gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris

Question 4: Identify the muscles that are referred to as the ‘Posterior Chain’. Satisfactory response
Identify three (3) exercises that focus on the development of the
‘Posterior Chain.’ Yes ☐ No ☐

Answer: Comment:

The Posterior Chain consists of the Hamstring, Gluteus Maximus and erecter
spinae muscle groups.

Barbell Goodmornings
Back extensions
Romanian deadlifts

Question 5: What is the ‘Posterior Chain’? Explain its role in force Satisfactory response
production.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: Comment:

The Posterior Chain refers to the structures at the back of the leg and spine.
The main muscles that make up the Posterior Chain are the calf muscles,
hamstrings, gluteus maximi, latissimus dorsi and the erector spinae
muscles.

Question 6: List the human body’s ‘primal or bio-motor’ movement/motor Satisfactory response
patterns.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer(s): Comment:
Upper Body – push, pull

Lower Body – squat lunge

Trunk – bend, resist rotation

Locomotion – walking,

Question 7: Why is the ‘scapulo-thoracic’ joint defined as a ‘pseudo-joint’ Satisfactory response

and not a ‘true’ joint?
Yes ☐ No ☐

Answer: The scapula-thoracic is not a true anatomical joint as it has none of the Comment:
usual characteristics of a true joint such as union by fibrous, cartilaginous or
synovial tissues.

Question 8: If humans did not have a scapula, please explain how this would Satisfactory response
effect the range of movement at the shoulder joint.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: Comment:
The scapula is integral to shoulder mobility, it engages in the 6 types of motion
which allow for a fully functional upper extremity movement known as
protraction, retraction, elevation, depression, upward rotation and downward
rotation.

Question 9: Explain the anatomical process known as the ‘Lat/Glute’ sling. Satisfactory response
Highlight it’s benefit for the human body.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: A process by which the body is able to transfer large force from upper Comment:
and lower extremities. Thus transferring force using a cross body mechanism.

Question 10: Explain the process of ‘abdominal hollowing’ or ‘TVA Satisfactory response
recruitment’, identify the muscles involved and identify one
exercise that will condition this process. Yes ☐ No ☐

Answer: Comment:
Abdominal hollowing involves pulling the belly into the spine where the transverse
abdominis wraps around the region, exercise that practices this is knee to elbow crunch

Question 11: Explain the process of ‘abdominal bracing’, identify the muscles Satisfactory response
involved and identify one exercise that will condition this
process. Yes ☐ No ☐

Answer: Comment:

Abdominal bracing is when once contracts the muscles around the midsection to
create rigidity and stability across the spine. The muscle involved are transverse
abdominals, obliques, quadratus lumborum, spinal erectors, rectus abdominals.
A plank would condition this process.

Question 12: Explain the musculo-skeletal benefit of using the swiss ball or Satisfactory response
BOSU in abdominal conditioning (ie crunches).
Yes ☐ No ☐
CRS170
Revision 101
July 2017

Answer: Comment:
The swiss ball eliminates the impact of the hard surface on the spine as well as
helping keeping the lower black protected thus reducing the risk of back injury
by promoting better posture

It also allows for increasing the range of motion for clients and the ability to use
the process of reciprocal inhibition

Question 13: Explain the importance of Vastus Medialis in relation to the knee Satisfactory response
joint/patellar control.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: the vastus medialis helps stabilise the kneecap and keep it inline when Comment:
one bends their knee joint.

Question 14: Explain the importance of scapula stability in relation shoulder Satisfactory response
(gleno-humeral joint) movement and control.
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: Comment:

The scapula is integral to shoulder mobility, it engages in the 6 types of motion

which allow for a fully functional upper extremity movement known as
protraction, retraction, elevation, depression, upward rotation and downward
rotation.

Question 15: When training consistently above 90%RM (Strength training) Satisfactory response
explain the impact on the Central Nervous System and identify
one strategy that you can use within your exercise prescription Yes ☐ No ☐
to address this concern.
Answer: Comment:
Training above 90% RM consistently is taxing on the central nervous system, thus it is
important to rest 5 minutes when programming a lift that is in the 90% RM range as the
central nervous system needs time to recuperate before lifting again

Question 16: Using the example of glute activation in SB crunches, explain Satisfactory response
the anatomical concept of ‘reciprocal inhibition.’

Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: Comment:

Reciprocal inhibition refers to the relaxation of one side of the muscles on one side of
the joint to accommodate contraction on the other side. As the Glutes are the
contracted the hip flexors turn off thus allowing the abdominals to do more of the work
as wanted in a SB crunch .

Question 17: Please complete the following skeletal muscle actions analysis Satisfactory response
table:
Yes ☐ No ☐
Answer: Comment:

Muscle Joint Joint Action Muscle Contraction

Rectus Abdominus Spine Extension Eccentric

Gastrocnemius Ankle Dorsi flexion Eccentric
Latissimus Dorsi Shoulder Extension Concentric
Pectoralis Major Shoulder Horizontal flexion Concentric
Rhomboid Major Scapular Medial rotation Concentric
