GLOSSARY
[The heading above is set to Heading 1 paragraph style but with the automatic number deleted.
Paragraph styles need to be used consistently so that the automatically generated table of contents
works correctly]
[This document has two sections. This is the end of Section 1and Section 2 starts with Chapter 1.
There is a section break at the end of the Glossary and before Chapter 1. Take care not to delete a
section break as this will remove the footer and page numbering from the whole document.

1.
[The heading above is set to Heading 1 paragraph style without modification. It should automatically
number itself as 1. If it shows a number greater than 1, go back to previous Heading 1 styles and
delete the automatically generated number from previous Heading 1 paragraphs. Heading1 is
intended for use as a main chapter heading and it will always appear at the top of a new page.]

[The heading above is set to Heading 2 paragraph style. It should automatically number itself
correctly if paragraph styles have been used consistently for other headings]
This is where you type your main text. Figures must have a caption associated to it. Please refer to
the example below:
1
*MEng/BEng/BSc Individual Project Report
[To insert a caption for a picture, Right-Click on the picture and click on Insert Caption, or
alternatively, highlight the appropriate picture, select Reference->Insert Caption. You are advised to
use MS Word to generate and manage figure numbers automatically. Otherwise, you’ll end up having
to manually adjust figure numbers to match List of Figures.]
[It is recommended that when you insert an image, you set the layout to "In line with text" This will
ensure that the figure moves with the text.]
[If you resize an image, take care not to distort the aspect ratio, i.e. do not stretch it or squash it
vertically. If you resize an image by dragging the corner, this will maintain the correct aspect ratio.]

2. [CHAPTER TITLE]
The main body of the report should typically contain the sections listed in the Project Handbook in
section 7. Due to the diversity of projects, students should consult their project supervisor about
the most appropriate structure for their individual projects.
Chapters may start with an introduction; number all paragraphs but do not use more than three levels
e.g. 1.2.4 but not 1.2.4.1. Use alphabets, bullet points, etc… if you feel it is absolutely necessary to
have further sub-sections. The conclusion chapter is particularly important.
Remember that the first page of chapter 1 is designated page 1 of the report such that any pages
before chapter 1 can be numbered in Roman numerals, i.e. i, ii, iii, iv, v, … There is a section break
at the end of the Glossary and before Chapter 1. Take care not to delete a section break as this
will remove the footer and page numbering from the whole document.

Equations: All equations need to be numbered. An easy way of numbering equations is to use the
chapter number e.g. Equation 2 -1 could be used to represent the first equation you use in chapter 2
of your report, etc…
e=mc 2
Equation 2-1
x+2 x
y=
z
Equation 2-2
Tables, diagrams and graphs: All tables, diagrams, charts and graphs must be referenced in the
text (using figure numbers) and need to be followed by a caption that briefly describes the table,
diagram, chart or graph; the caption should include some form of numbering.
