Chapter 11: Refrigeration Cycle

Assignment session 3

Start Time: 8:20 PM

Finish Time: 9:20 PM

Q. 1: Assume that the capacity of the cooling equipment (refrigerator) is 195 TR.
It works between the two temperature range -5℃ and 20℃. How much mass of ice
can be produced in a complete day from the water available at 20℃. Also calculate
the power input required to operate this. You can assume latent heat of ice as 335
kJ/kg, and that the refrigerator works on reverse Carnot cycle. (2+2)

Q.2: Consider aircraft cooling is required for a cabin load of 30 TR. The plan is at
a height of 3 km above the ground where atmospheric air is at pressure of 0.8 bar
and temperature of 17°C. Due to the ram effect, atmospheric air is compressed to a
pressure of 0.095 MPa and temperature of 303 K. This air is then further
compressed in a compressor to 0.475 MPa, and then cooled in a heat exchanger to
340K, and lastly expanded in the cooling turbine to a pressure of 0.1 MPa and
supplied to the cabin. After absorbing heat from the cabin, the air leaves the cabin
at a temperature of 300 K. Assume isentropic efficiencies of cooling turbine and
the compressor to be 90%. Calculate C.O.P. of the system, draw schematic as well
as TS diagram of the process.
Use cold air standard assumption: Cp= 1.004 kJ/kg K; γ=1.4. (5+1+1)
