Sufferage is a Destiny

Oedipus “ I have suffered terribly , Theseus , wrongs on wrongs, no end”(670-671)

In the book we’ve seen Odeipus go through many traumatic events since the day the prophecy

was set from the gods . Which makes me question, why do Oedipus, Creon, Ismene most of

Thebes believe in gods when thereʻs still chaos happening to everyone , wouldn't you think if

you believe in something it would be for the better good or is it its a belief if they praise them its

to try and avoid any violence and mistreatment ? Chorus: “ don't curse me too, I cry to you

Zeus,Zeus,my king!” (1681-1682). This demonstrates to me the chorus praised Zeus in a time of

need to avoid their threat , by them saying “Zeus, Zeus ,my king” its like they were trying to kiss

his ass to get out of it . And why are evil prophecy’s even made in the first place? Does that

mean our characters worship evil , since they believe in gods that create evil ? I feel the author

is conveying we can believe as much as we want and what we want but each persons life has a

set destiny good or bad . The author shows this by using Oedipus journey such as himself

almost dying after birth, while growing up he murdered his parents, got kicked out of his city

then later on his own sons wanted his body buried. Looking at the quote it states “ no end” its

because the gods continued suffering him until he was in the ground. Yet, I will never

understand why in todays world there are roughly over 4,800 different religions and why we

believe them because no one actually knows how this world was created, why bad things
happen like 911 . Iʻm sure at least one of the 2,977 people that died on 911 were Chirstion ,

attended Church on sundays, praised god then past away from one of the saddest moments of

American History. Like Oedipus he praised gods and suffered in return. So my question is , is

believing in these gods worth it ??
