Notes From The Director
W ell, if you haven’t heard by now, we
have had a great year at the Cincinnati
Zoo & Botanical Garden.
Thank goodness people love animals! Even
in an economic downturn, we have had the
best attendance in a decade, and our visitors
have really responded to our “More Animals!
More Fun!” approach that we’ve grown over
the past few years. When guests come in our
new Historic Vine Street Village entrance, they
are welcomed with a hands-on experience to
see animals “up close and personal,” and chat with one of our staff or
volunteers holding anything from an alligator to a bearcat!
This new entrance is really a great leap forward for the Zoo, allowing
us to welcome more visitors and provide a world-class experience right
here in Cincinnati. A decade in the making, Historic Vine Street Village
adds 14 acres to the Zoo, which will over time allow us room to grow
some great big new exhibits in our old parking lots. The new facility is
also our most recent step in our commitment to our Go Green initiative,
which makes us the greenest zoo in America. This new entrance is the
first Platinum Level LEED certified facility in Ohio, meaning that it uses
well less than half the energy and water of traditional construction.

The biggest advantage to the new entry
is that it places our guests right in the heart of
the Zoo. Immediately adjacent are our biggest
animals – our four Asian elephants in our El-
ephant Reserve exhibit and our Maasai giraffe
in our Giraffe Ridge experience, where you can
feed these mammalian giants on your next
visit.
Then as you wander down the hill through
the Zoo you will notice more “Meet-A-Zoo
Keeper” programs than ever. Scheduled each
day so visitors can catch them, these provide
20 different opportunities to get wildlife infor-
mation “straight from the horse’s mouth,” so
to speak, from the keepers who are like part of
their animal’s families and know them best.
At the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, our goal is to “inspire every
visitor with wildlife every day,” and I am glad to report that we have a
terrific team working hard every day to deliver on that promise. I have
had the chance to visit a handful of some of the top zoos in America
this year, and I can uncategorically say that ours is the most vibrant
and active by a mile. Between our animal shows, keeper activities, and
random animal encounters throughout the park, the Cincinnati Zoo &
Botanical Garden shows the most heart and is the most fun – for our
visitors and the animals we care for.
I have long felt that zoos everywhere reflect the community they are

in. This is because zoos are much more public places than most cultural
and art institutions. Zoos have big attendance and play an important role
in the lives of the area’s families. As a result, I believe that more than
100 cities across the country deeply believe that theirs is one of the top
zoos in America. It’s kind of like the way people have great loyalty to the
school they went to. That said, of course, only a few can actually live up
to being a top tier zoo.
The very good news is that the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
is, in fact, a good reflection of our community, thrifty and caring, with
a lot of heart. Hamilton County and our tri-state region is a remarkably
philanthropic community. That is what makes us one of the great zoos
in America. Sure, other zoos have much more money than we do, prin-
cipally from tax support, and some famous ones have great weather or
are in super-affluent cities. But none are more active than our Zoo, really
trying to inspire people to care about wildlife.
Graded on a curve, we are on the top of the list. That’s from being
thrifty, dreaming big, trying harder, believing we can do it, and knowing
that our community loves this old Zoo and is there to make it possible.

Notes From
The Chairman
I n reflecting on the past year at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical
Garden, I’m proud to note that it has been successful in many
ways. The Zoo was again awarded accreditation through the
Association of Zoos & Aquariums, providing a thorough peer
review process that helps keep us one of the leading zoological
institutions in the world. In addition, because we are not just a
zoo, we were also re-accredited in the last year as a botanical
garden and as a museum through the American Association of
Museums.
I am particularly pleased to report that our business prac-
tices and finances are in order. Thanks to the best attendance in
a decade, the ongoing support of Hamilton County taxpayers,
and generous private philanthropy, the Cincinnati Zoo is thriv-
ing. We have completed our Strategic Plan, which has lead us to
redouble our efforts to “inspire every visitor with wildlife every
day,” a goal we deliver on throughout the Zoo grounds all year
long.
A big part of our success this year is thanks to our new His-
toric Vine Street Village entry area. This modern facility allows
the Zoo to welcome many more guests, particularly on busy
days, thanks to increased and easy parking. Also, the new en-
trance is the hallmark of our ongoing effort to be “the greenest
zoo in America.” Nominated to be the first Platinum-level LEED
certified facility in our region, the entry also features our public
Go Green Garden where over 1.1 million visitors each year can
participate in fun ways to learn how to save energy and water
in their own homes and daily lives.
So, I am glad to report that the Cincinnati Zoo & Botani-
cal Garden is positioned for growth and success in the com-
ing years, allowing it to remain the #1 family attraction in our
region. And I particularly want to thank all the dedicated and
hard-working staff and my fellow Trustees who make the Zoo
such a magnificent place!
