DAY 6-7

interaction and relationship of a speaker.

Sub-competency/Sub-task:

I. What Should You Know?

History of Communicative Competence
Communicative competence can be defined as the ability to use language , or to
communicate in culturally appropriate manner in order to make and accomplish social
tasks with efficacy and fluency through extended interactions.
Two proponent of communicative competence
Noam Chomsky
 He distinguishes between competence and performance. Competence is the
knowledge of language. It states the structural properties of all the sentences of a
language. Performance involves actual real-time use and may diverge radically
from the underlying competence due to environmental disturbances and memory
limitations.
Dell Hymes
 He distinguishes the representation of ability to use language in a social
context, to observe sociolinguistic norms of appropriateness. His focus was not
language learning but language as social behavior.

Day 8
MELC: Shift in Speech Context, Speech Style, Speech Act and Communicative
Strategy affects the Role and responsibilities of the speaker,
message and delivery

Sub-competencies/Sub-tasks:
1. Define Speech Context, Speech Style, Speech Act and Communicative
Strategy
2. Explain the shift of Speech communication that affects speaker, message,
delivery and etc.
I. What Should You Know?

In public speaking, Speech Context refers to the purpose of the speech-why you are
giving the speech (occasion) and who you are giving the speech to (audience).
Speech Style refers to how you deliver your message or how you achieve
delivering your message to the audience and is usually based on the personal preference.
For instance, you may prefer to ask rhetorical questions to the audience to get them
thinking about your ideas, or you may prefer to tell a few jokes and lean on irony and
sarcasm to make your message memorable.
Speech Style is where you get to add your own individual flair in a way that will
help you deliver your message to the audience.
In Linguistics, a speech act is an utterance defined in terms of a speaker’s
intention and the effect it has on a listener. Essentially, it is the action that the speaker
hopes to provoke in his or her audience. Speech acts might be requests, warnings,
promises, apologies, greetings or any number of declarations.
Speech Acts include real-life interactions and require not only knowledge of the
language but also appropriate use of that language within a given culture.
Communicative strategy is the most effective tool in delivering and acquiring
information from both speaker and listener. This is used to efficiently share useful ideas
to provide quality of interaction in communication based on previous references.

It affects the following:

The Speaker- Chooses the most familiar topic which he is willing to discuss and
expound at the extent of his expertise. He initiates the interaction and takes control of the
success of the communication by means of proper way of presentation.
 Is one of the key elements of speech communication model
 Effective speakers are those who can most clearly delivery their message
to their recipients

Role and Responsibilities of the Speaker- These serve as the lifeline of the quality of
interaction in communication because the speaker handles the pros and cons of the
feedback received. When these are met, he creates a diversified way of thinking.

The Audience-Refers to the listeners who may react to the ideas presented. Their
reactions may enhance or diminish the flow of the communication based on how
interesting the topic is.

Relationship-The bond between the speaker and listener which may depend on how the
discussions relate to their interests and knowledge.

Quality Interaction-This is achieved when speaker and listener are able to exchange
related information which improves their reception.
The Delivery-This is affected whether the listeners are able to fully understand the
concept implied or creates doubtful remarks. Proper delivery requires techniques which
demand the speaker to express thoroughly.

The Message-This is the core concept of the interaction. When the speaker is able to
answer all the questions of the listener beforehand and received by them positively, then
the message is correct and acceptable.
 The word message comes from the Latin “mittere” means “to send”
 Messages consist of both verbal and non-verbal elements.
 People with their brainpower, experience and intellect, they need to make
sense of every message they are trying to deliver. This is why it’s so valuable
to understand the importance of the role as speaker, as initiator of
communication in the delivery of the message.

When communicative strategies are used effectively, both the speaker and listener
improve their interactive inputs and outputs.

A sudden change in communicative strategy may negatively affect the quality of

interaction, which includes the performance and organization of ideas of the speaker, the
audience, and the message of the topic or discussion.

Furthermore, instead of quality organization and successful discussion, the sudden

change in communicative strategy may distract the speakers from the particular message
to another. Lastly, respect and formalities, as well as the roles and responsibilities, will be
trampled upon.
