Define the following:

 Acoustics - It is the study of

sound in homes and other buildings,

as well as the design of such

structures for optimum acoustic

efficiency, including sound

transmission control, speech intelligibility, and soundproofing for speech

privacy. It increases the quality of music in a concert hall or recording

studio, or reduces noise in offices and homes to make them more

efficient and enjoyable places to work and live.

 Sound - is an auditory sensation, a

spatial occurrence, and a material

phenomenon all rolled into one. It

can be represented using distance,

direction, and position vectors.

Every designed space in architecture has the ability to alter, place,

reflect, or dissipate the sounds that occur there.

 Nature of Sound - It is concerned with the audible effects that sound

created in architectural spaces has.

The scale, shape, and finish materials

of enclosed spaces cause these

effects, the most well-known of which

are reverberation which echo, and are physical consequences of these

architectural features.

 Frequency - The level at which a wave

occurs in a substance (as in sound

waves) or in an electromagnetic field

(as in radio waves and light), normally

measured in seconds. It is a time and action-based dimension. Frequency

is characterized not only by conditions that allow for optimal phases, but

also by conditions that reduce interference between frequencies. The

distribution of size by rank, in decreasing order of size, is known as

frequency.

 Wavelengths - The distance between two

successive crests or troughs of a wave

can be described. A wave's length is

measured from one peak to the next, or from one trough to the next

(which may be an electromagnetic wave, a sound wave, or any other wave).
