Number of Sessions: 40

Course Review
Everything that surrounds and affects living organisms is environment .Environmental
studies pertains to a systematic analysis of natural and man-made world encompassing
various scientific, economic , social and cultural and ethical aspects.Human aspects
leading to large scale degradation of environment have aroused global concern on
environmental issues. The apex court has thus issued directives to impart environment
litracy to all.Study of environment and its human related aspects is important to create
awareness which will lead to change in attitude of environmental insensitivity and finally
lead to development of skill. The skill so acquired will be able to induce the learner to
conserve the natural resources and protect the environment.
India is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, losing about 2% of its GDP due to these
disasters. Almost every part of our country falls in atleast one natural hazard zone or other
and socio economic vulnerabilities in these areas make it difficult for the people to cope up
with impacts of these incidents without external support. Hence disasters are major
impediments on the path of economic development in India.
The purpose of this course is to capture the measures undertaken and systems established
for disaster management and environment education in the country. Study of the dynamics
of disaster management enables students to understand that there is shift in procedures
earlier adopted. Focus on relief is reduced.
More emphasis is now given on capacity building and preparedness. At the same time, a
knowledge of types of various disasters increases awareness in the students and demystify
nature and its fury which sometimes goes beyond human imagination as evident from an
earthquake in japan leading to tsunami , resulting in major fire and cascading into nuclear
emergency.

Course Objective:
A student who has taken this course should be able to:
i) Attain a thorough understanding of the causes and impacts of earthquake, floods,
Tsunamis, landslides, forest fire, volcanoes. Knowledge about other anthropogenic disaster
like nuclear explosion, riots, war, sabotage and pollution will teach students about the
vulnerability of human race. It should motivate the students to learn the existing
procedures and set up for dealing with crisis.
ii) To understand the basic concepts of environment segments, structure and functioning
and interrelationship among various components.
iii) Exchange of nutrients and energy in the ecosystem, biogeochemical cycles.and their
significances.
iv) different types of environmental degradation, role of development and technology on
natural resources
specially land degradation
v) Apply this knowledge to generate effective management of human resource and
infrastructure
vi ) Knowing the difference between a hazard and disaster. Provide recommendations for
reducing damage to the life and properties by understanding preparedness, mitigation
efforts and response mechanism.

Mode of teaching :
- 0n line lectures
- Presentations
- Newspapers articles
- Reference to research articles
-interactive on line classroom discussions
- Video clippings from You tube connected to environment and disasters

Learning outcome

-To equip the students about the knowledge about various types of disasters

and their causative agents and far reaching impacts need and objective of
disaster management
-To help them understand the structure and functioning of biotic and abiotic
components of ecosystem and how biotic component is affecting abiotic
components.
