SECTION 2: Project Details

This section covers the ideas and projects that have brought a positive change in the city through a solution to
an existing problem and relates to how and where those ideas were brought to life.
State the Project name or title: The Hunar Foundation (THF)
State the name of your new / existing project. N/A

Explain the IDEA behind your project / initiative (100 words):

ANSWER: THF was founded by a group of dedicated industrialists in Karachi, who recognized that human
resource development is the essential first step towards sustainable economic growth and so THF was formed to
initiate a movement to skill the motivated literate and semi-literate to provide training ‘with a difference’. The
vision is ‘A Skilled Pakistan’ with the goal of creating a new cadre of skilled Pakistanis, having better work
ethics and improved moral and social values and with high quality technical training. The aim is to act as a
‘catalyst’ for alleviating unemployment as well as stunted economic growth.

What are the major CHALLENGES that you seek to resolve through the idea mentioned above (100
words): *

ANSWER: This situation is extremely disruptive to the social and security fabric of Pakistan, the region and
beyond. Its implications are already evident in the youth getting involved in undesirable and destructive
behaviors. THF seeks to resolve this issue through skills training to get the youth off the streets and to give
them a SKILL, a CAREER and HOPE.

State an existing problem or gap within the community that you want to focus on and resolve through
your project / initiative.
ANSWER: Unless we are able to put our bulging youth to ‘WORK’ through Skills Training, mass poverty will
not be addressed. Our youth lacks the basic skills required to get quality jobs, leaving them unable to achieve
their full potential and limiting economic investment and growth. The challenge is further exacerbated by a
rapidly changing global economy that increasingly requires workers to be innovative, flexible and adaptive.

Foundational skills, such as literacy, deliver critical scaffolding for young people and are a prerequisite for
proficiency, problem solving, and socio-emotional skills. Unskilled workers are forced into unemployment or
are stuck in unstable low-wage jobs that offer little career mobility or growth. As they age, they become
increasingly vulnerable to job losses and labor market shocks.

The results are devastating on an individual and national level. Furthermore, low skills reduce labor force
productivity and make investment less attractive, decreasing the transfer of technology and “know-how” from
high-income countries. Low skills also perpetuate poverty and inequality because the private sector can’t
flourish in a country that doesn’t have a skilled workforce to sustain it.
Pakistan’s future economy and prosperity demands that its next generation is equipped with the necessary skills
needed by the industry to compete in the global markets and also to participate in this fast-evolving world.

4
What are the GOALS you have set for your project? (100 words) *
ANSWER:
 Provide high-quality learning environment and training of International Standards so that graduates can
seek employment in local industries, thereby improving productivity, increasing machine efficiencies
(consequently quality of product) and most importantly, lower wastages. With these qualifications,
graduates may also seek employment outside Pakistan.
 With 8 institutes established and more in the pipeline, THF plans to increase the number of purpose built
‘institutes of excellence’ and introduce more Teacher Training Institutes across the country by the year
2030
 Graduate 100,000 students, annually by 2030. Even with 80% employability, this makes a contribution
of close to Rs.70 billion per year to the economy.

What are your project OBJECTIVES? (100 words) *

ANSWER:
 Alleviate poverty by creating bread-earners through employment-focused vocational training
 Provide school leavers and other young adults having limited or no access to higher education with
opportunities to advance in professional careers
 Impart quality technical training as well as ethical, social and moral values
