Whoever Learns Ninety-Nine Names of Allaah will Enter Paradise

The Messenger of Allaah ‫( ﷺ‬peace, prayers and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah
has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one. Whoever learns / enumerates / comprehends /
memorises them will enter Paradise. And verily, Allaah is Witr*, and He loves Al-Witr [that which is
indivisible / things in odd numbers (e.g. some words of praise during prayer)].” (Bukhaari 2736, 6410
& Muslim 2677)

*(Al-Witr: The Indivisible, One, Unique, without parallel, One Who has no like or equal or partner,
the Indivisible Whose essence cannot be divided).

The Names of Allaah are not confined to Ninety-Nine

Imam Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated in Sharh Saheeh Muslim: ‘The scholars are
unanimously agreed that this hadeeth (above) does not mean that Allaah has only ninety-nine
names, or that He does not have any other names apart from these ninety-nine. Rather what the
hadeeth means is that whoever learns these ninety-nine will enter Paradise. The point is that one
may enter Paradise by learning them, not that the number is limited to these names.’

The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “There is no one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says:
‘O Allaah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your
Hand, Your command over me is forever executed / prevails, and Your decree/decision over me is
just. I ask/beseech You by every name belonging to You, which You have named Yourself with, or
revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or which You have preserved in the
knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light
of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety’ – but Allaah will take
away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.” He was asked: “O Messenger of Allaah, should
we learn this?” He said: “Of course; everyone who hears it should learn it.” (Musnad Ahmad, Saheeh
Ibn Hibbaan, Mustadrak al-Haakim, At-Tabaraani, Ibn Abi Shaybah)

Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said concerning this hadeeth in Majmoo’ al-
Fataawa (6/374): ‘This indicates that Allaah has more than ninety-nine names.’

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Tafseer of Surah Al-'Araaf 7:180: ‘It should
be noted that the beautiful names of Allaah are not limited/restricted to ninety-nine.’ (Tafseer Ibn
Katheer 2/328)

Page | 6
A FEW NAMES, A T T R I B U T E S & DESCRIPTIONS OF ALLAAH

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: ‘The beautiful names of Allaah are not limited
and are innumerable. Allaah, may He be Glorified and Exalted, has names and attributes that He
has kept to Himself in the knowledge of the unseen with Him.’ (Badaa’i‘ al-Fawaa’id 1/174-176)

Moreover, Ibn al-Qayyim also said: ‘What is included in the section of descriptions /
characteristics (Akhbaar) about Him, the Exalted, is broader than what is included in the section of
His Names (Asmaa) and Attributes (Sifaat).’ (Badaa’i‘ al-Fawaa’id 1/161)

For this reason, the word ‘few’ is included in the title of this text: ‘A Few Names, Attributes and...’
The text is a humble attempt to compile a variety of not all, but some of the Names and Attributes
of Allaah, and some descriptions of His actions - based on the Qur’aan, Prophetic Narrations
(Ahaadeeth) and Prophetic supplications.

Moreover, using a variety of sources, brief meanings have been given for the Names and
Attributes of Allaah, Who is Al-Waasi’ (The Vast, Boundless, All-Embracing). In reality, each
name/attribute has a vaster, deeper and immense meaning; entire volumes and books have been
written on them by past and present day scholars and students.

Therefore, although the Names and Attributes have been grouped into subsections in this text,
they should not be understood as belonging to a specific subsection only, but rather they could be

included in various others too. For example, ‘Rabbul-'Izzah: The Lord of Honour, Power,
Might’ – is included in the section of ‘Lordship & Governance’. However, it could also be included
in another two: ‘Power & Might’ and ‘Grandeur & Magnificence’.

Any merit and good that comes from this text is from Allaah alone, Who is Al-‘Aleem (The All-
Knowing), Al-Qudduus (The Most Holy One, All-Pure, All-Perfect) and As-Salaam (The Source of
Peace & Perfection, Impeccable). Any errors and deficiencies are entirely from the author.
“...man is forgetful and perfection is only for Allaah, may He be Exalted.” (Ibn Hajar, An-Nukat V1/473)

A Few Names, Attributes and Descriptions of Allaah

Oneness & Uniqueness

 Allaah
The only One in existence Who truly possesses the qualities of divinity and lordship. The One
Who is adored and worshipped and the One Who deserves to be worshipped by the whole of
His creation. The attributes of divinity with which He describes Himself are the attributes of
perfection. He has always existed together with His attributes eternally since before the
creation; bringing creation into existence did not add anything to His attributes that was not
already there. As He was, together with His attributes, in pre-eternity, so He will remain with
those attributes throughout endless time, forever.


‘Allaahu laa ilaaha illaa huwa’: Allaah - there is no deity or god except Him.
There is nothing worthy of worship but Him. (Qur’aan 2:255)

Al-Ilaah: The One and Only True God, the One Who alone deserves to be worshipped.
Allaah alone possesses divinity. This name comprehends all of the divine epithets in their full
perfection. (Qur’aan 43:84)

Ilaahun-naas: The God of mankind. (Qur’aan 114:3)

Al-Waahid: The One and Only – true God, the One Who was First before Whom nothing
existed, Has no partner, the Unique. The One in Essence Who is without like, the One in
attributes besides Whom there is no other. His servants are obliged to believe in His Oneness,
in belief, word and deed, by recognizing that He is absolutely perfect and is unique in His
oneness, and by directing all kinds of worship to Him Alone. (Qur’aan 12:39)

 Al-Ahad: The One and Only – absolutely singular in His essence, and utterly unique and
incomparable in His attributes and His actions in every way – there is nothing like Him in any
way. Absolute oneness, singularity and uniqueness. Unrestricted perfection. He is the One
Who is uniquely, utterly and perfectly One, with no partners in His Uniqueness. He is the One
Who is singled out in all aspects of perfection such that nothing else shares with Him in these.
(Qur’aan 112:1)


Al-Witr: The Indivisible, One, Unique, without parallel, One Who has no like or equal or
partner. The Indivisible Whose essence cannot be divided. Not one of a pair. (Bukhaari, Muslim,
Ibn Maajah, Haakim)

A FEW NAMES, A T T R I B U T E S & DESCRIPTIONS OF ALLAAH

Al-Haqq: The Very Truth, Truly Real, True One, Really-Existing. He Whose existence and
divinity are true, Whose existence is undeniable. He is the Truth in His enduring essence which
shall never perish or diminish. His nature is the truth that shall never be supplanted. He is the
Truth in and of Himself and in His attributes, and His Attributes are perfect. His existence is one
of His essential qualities; He cannot but exist. The Necessarily-Existing by His own essence.
Nothing else can exist except through Him. Everything besides Him, forever and eternally,
exists only by virtue of Him. The One Truly-Existing, from which every true thing gets its true
reality. Every reality exists only by virtue of Him and nothing has any intrinsic, inherent and
fundamental reality except Him.
His promise is true; His Word is true; the meeting with Him is true; His Prophets and
Messengers are true; Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬is true; His Books are true; His religion (deen) is true;
worshipping Him alone is true; everything that has to do with Him is true. Allaah is the
Absolute Truth and whatever else is worshipped besides Him is false.
He guides to the truth, decrees the truth, and speaks the truth. No matter what changes may
take place in the world, challenges, difficulties, or discoveries we might encounter, the Truth
that is Allaah will never change. (Qur’aan 24:25)

Al-Mubeen: The Clear and Manifest One, Evident, One Who makes things clear, One
Who makes clear His proofs and signs. (Qur’aan 24:25)


Al-Haqqul-Mubeen: The Manifest Truth, Ultimate Truth, Evident Truth, the Very
Truth that makes everything clear. (Qur’aan 24:25)

Al-Hayy: The Ever-Living. Allaah's life is the most complete and perfect life without
deficiency or weakness of any kind. Allaah is the Living Who confers life upon others. The One
Who has perfect power, existing in and of Himself and not dependant upon anyone else. He is
the Ever-Living Who never dies. He will never perish, nor come to an end, nor cease (to exist).
The name Al-Hayy encompasses all the qualities of His essence/self. (Qur’aan 2:255)

Al-Qayyuum: The Completely Self-Sustaining in His essence and existence. The
Completely Independent, Eternal, Self-Subsisting. The One Who sustains, cares for and
protects all that exists; He regulates their affairs and provisions. He is the All-Sustaining,
neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. The Self-Existing, One Upon Whom everything
depends. Nothing can be independent of Him even for the blinking of an eye. The One Who
gives life. The name Al-Qayyuum encompasses all the qualities of His deeds/actions.
(Qur’aan 2:255)

Sufficient Master - Whom all creatures need. The Everlasting Sustainer of all. Only Allaah has
complete nobility and dominion. Radically transcendent, the One to Whom things aim, and
direct themselves. The One to Whom one has recourse; that which has nothing hollow - an
indivisible Essence; being that continues forever. The Creator of everything, of Whom nothing
is independent, and Whose unity everything indicates, Who takes no nourishment. He neither
eats nor drinks. The Master Who is perfect in all aspects of power, might, prominence,
greatness, forbearance, self-sufficiency, compellence, knowledge and wisdom. He is the One to
Whom all of creation turns to and relies for all of their needs, predicaments and necessities;
for He is in and of Himself absolutely perfect, with unrestricted perfection, in His Names,
Attributes and Deeds. (Qur’aan 112:2)


‘Qayyimus-samaawaati wal-ard wa man fee hinna’:
The Holder/Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them.
[Supplication - Hisnul Muslim]


An-Nuur: The Light. The Guide, the One Who illuminates; the One Who is manifest,
clear. He is the One Who illuminates the heavens and the earth with lights that He has placed
therein. His veil is light and if it were to be removed, everything of His creation as far as He can
see would be burnt, may He be glorified. (Qur’aan 24:35)(Tirmidhi, Haakim, Ibn Maajah)
‘O Allaah, place within my heart light; and upon my tongue light; and within my ears/hearing light; and
within my eyes/sight/vision light; and place above me light; and beneath me light; and on my right
light; and on my left light; and before me light; and behind me light; and place light within my soul; and
augment/magnify light for me; and amplify/greaten light for me; and grant me light and make me light.
O Allaah, bestow upon me light; and place light in my tendons/nerves; and light in my flesh; and light
in my blood; and light in my hair and light in my skin.’ ‘O Allaah, place light for me in my grave and light
in my bones.’ ‘And increase me with light, and increase me with light, and increase me with light.’
‘And grant me light upon light.’ [Supplication - Hisnul Muslim]


‘Nuurus-samaawaati wal-ard’: The Light of the heavens and the earth.
‘Allaah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His Light is like a niche within
which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a brilliant / shining / glittering /
pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west,
whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself), even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allaah
guides to His Light whom He wills. And Allaah presents examples for mankind, and Allaah is
Knowing of all things.’ (Qur’aan 24:35)

the promise of Allaah is truth, but most of them do not know. (Qur’aan 10:55)

 And your Lord is most knowing / knows best of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And
We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to Daawuud (David)
We gave the Zabuur (Book of Psalms). (Qur’aan 17:55)

 And, [O Muhammad], you are not [engaged] in any matter or recite any portion of the Qur'aan,
and you [mankind] do not do any deed except that We are Witness (Shuhuud) over you when
you are involved in it. And not absent from your Lord is any [part] of an atom's weight within
the earth or within the heaven or [anything] smaller than that or greater but that it is in a clear
Register/Record. (Qur’aan 10:61)

 And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is

(Qur’aan 6:59)

 [He is] the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates,
and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. He extends provision for whom He wills
and restricts [it]. (Qur’aan 42:11-12)

 To Allaah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show

(Qur’aan 2:284)

 The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing
except that it exalts [Allaah] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting.

 Do you not see that to Allaah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the
earth, and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and

humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honour. Indeed, Allaah does what He wills.
(Qur’aan 22:18)

 I (Allaah) did not make them (Satan and his offspring) witness (nor took their help in) the

Allaah is over all things competent / has power over all things. (Qur’aan 35:1)

 Allaah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.
And Allaah presents examples for mankind, and Allaah is
Knowing of all things. (Qur’aan 24:35)

 Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is over all things competent. [He] Who
created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in
Might, the Forgiving. [And] Who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the
creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see
any breaks? Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled
while it is fatigued. (Qur’aan 67:1-4)

 Do you not see that Allaah has subjected to you whatever is on the earth and the ships which

the earth, unless by His permission. Verily, Allaah is, for mankind, full of Kindness, Most
Merciful. (Qur’aan 22:65)

 So exalted is He in Whose Hand is the realm/dominion/authority of all things, and to Him you
will be returned. (Qur’aan 36:83)

heavens and the earth, that he would be among the certain [in faith]. (Qur’aan 6:75)

 Say, “O Allaah, Master & Possessor of the Kingdom / Owner of Sovereignty, You give
sovereignty to whom You will, and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honour
whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your Hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over
all things competent.
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring
the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to
whom You will without account.” (Qur’aan 3:26-27)

 [Supplication of Joseph – (Yusuf)]: “My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty
and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. The (only) Creator of the heavens and earth,
You are my Waliy (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the
Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim (one who submits to You) and join me with the
righteous.” (Qur’aan 12:101)

 And to Allaah belongs the dominion/sovereignty/kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He
forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And ever is Allaah Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful. (Qur’aan 48:14)

 O mankind, fear / be dutiful to / be mindful of your Lord, Who created you from one soul
(Adam - Aaadam) and created from it - its mate (Eve - Hawwa) and dispersed from both of
them many men and women. And fear Allaah through Whom you demand your mutual
(rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allaah is Ever an All-
Watcher, Observer over you. (Qur’aan 4:1)

 He created you from one soul (Adam). Then He made from it - its mate (Eve), and He produced
for you from the grazing livestock/cattle eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your
mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allaah, your Lord; to Him
belongs (all) dominion, authority / His is the kingdom. There is no deity except Him. So how
then are you turned away? (Qur’aan 39:6)

 To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him are not
prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire. They exalt/glorify [Him] night and
day [and] do not slacken. Or have men taken for themselves gods from the earth who
resurrect [the dead]? Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allaah, they
both would have been ruined, corrupted. So exalted is Allaah, Lord of the Throne, above what
they describe. He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned. (Qur’aan
21:19-23)

 Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined
entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not
believe?
And We placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them, and We
made therein [mountain] passes [as] roads that they might be guided.
And We made the sky a protected ceiling/guarded canopy, but they, from its signs, are turning
away.
And it is He Who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly
bodies] in an orbit are swimming/floating.
And We did not grant to any man before you immortality/eternity [on earth]; so if you die -
would they be eternal? (Qur’aan 21:30-34)

 It is Allaah Who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see. Then He established
Himself above the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His Law), each running
[its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter / regulates all affairs / manages all
matters; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.
And it is He Who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from
all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in
that are signs for a people who give thought.
And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees,
[growing] several from a single root or otherwise, watered with the same water; but We make
some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who

reason. (Qur’aan 13:2-4)

 For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him/her who protect him/her by the
decree of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah will not change the condition of a people until they change
what is in themselves. And when Allaah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And
there is not for them besides Him any Waal (patron/protector).
It is He Who shows you the lightning, as a fear (for travellers) and as a hope (for those who
wait for rain). And it is He Who brings up (or originates) the clouds, heavy (with water).
And the thunder exalts [ Allaah ] with praise of Him - and the angels [as well] in awe / from fear
of Him - and He sends thunderbolts and strikes therewith whom He wills, while they dispute
about Allaah; and He is the Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment/assault / Stern in His
plan / Tremendous in might. (Qur’aan 13:11-13)

 For Him (alone) is the supplication/prayer in Truth: any others that they call upon besides Him,
hear them no more than if they were to stretch forth their hands for water to reach their
mouths but it reaches them not: for the prayer of those without Faith is nothing but (futile)
wandering (in the mind).
And to Allaah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by
compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons. (Qur’aan 13:14-
15)

 Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None
holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing. Or who is it
that could be (as) an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers
are not but in delusion. Or who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision?
But they have persisted in insolence and aversion. Then is one who walks fallen on his face
better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path? Say, “It is He Who has produced you
and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.” Say, “It is He Who has
multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.” (Qur’aan 67:19-24)

 It is He Who has created you from a single soul/person (Adam), and has given you a place of
residing (on the earth or in your mother's wombs) and a place of storage [in the earth (in your
graves) or in your father's loins]. Indeed, We have explained in detail Our signs/revelations for
people who understand.
And it is He Who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all
things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And
from the palm trees - of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens
of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when
it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe. (Qur’aan 6:98-
99)

 And He it is Who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and
crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar.

Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah - almsgiving] on the day of its
harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess. (Qur’aan
6:141)

 Allaah is the One Who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then
will give you life. Are there any of your “partners” who does anything of that? Exalted is He and
High above what they associate with Him.
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people
have earned, so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done, that
perhaps they will return [to righteousness / by repenting to Allaah, and begging His Pardon].
(Qur’aan 30:40-41)

 Say, [O Muhammad], “Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then
Allaah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allaah, over all things, is competent.” (Qur’aan
29:20)

 It is Allaah Who made out of the things He created, some things to give you shade; of the hills
He made some for your shelter; He made you garments to protect you from heat, and coats of
mail to protect you from your (mutual) violence. Thus does He complete His favours on you,
that you may submit [to Him]. (Qur’aan 16:81)

 O mankind, worship your Lord, Who created you and those before you, that you may become
righteous - [He] Who made for you the earth a place of settlement / bed [spread out] and the
sky a canopy / ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as
provision for you. So do not attribute to Allaah equals while you know [that there is nothing
similar to Him]. (Qur’aan 2:21-22)

 Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.

Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.

Then He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him the soul (created by Allaah
for that person), and He gave you hearing (ears), sight (eyes) and hearts. Little is the thanks
you give! (Qur’aan 32:7-9)

 Indeed, Allaah is not timid/shy to present an example - that of a mosquito/gnat or what is

smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as
for those who disbelieve, they say, “What did Allaah intend by this as an example?” He
misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly
disobedient. (Qur’aan 2:26)

 [Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except
its own people. Then do they await except the way of the former peoples? But you will never
find in the way of Allaah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allaah any
alteration. (Qur’aan 35:43)

 So I swear by the Lord of all points of sunrise and sunset in the east and the west, that indeed
‘Innaa la-Qaadiruun’ - We are able / We have the power / We are truly capable; of replacing
them with (others) better than them, and We cannot be prevented (from doing so) / We are

not to be outdone/outrun. (Qur’aan 70:40-41)

 Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have threatened/promised them; indeed, We
are ‘Muqtadiruun’ Perfect in Ability - We have perfect command over them / shall prevail over
them / have full power over them. (Qur’aan 43:42)

 Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he
was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back
on his heels will never harm Allaah at all; but Allaah will reward the grateful.
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allaah at an appointed term /
decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof;
and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will
reward the grateful. (Qur’aan 3:144-145)

 If you disbelieve - indeed, Allaah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve/likes not
disbelief for His servants. And if you are grateful, He approves/is pleased therewith for you;
and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return,
and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the
breasts. (Qur’aan 39:7)

 [Mention] when Allaah said, “O Jesus (‘Eesaa), indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself
and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to
Allaah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is
your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ/dispute.”
(Qur’aan 3:55)

 Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allaah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out
of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit/tradegain that will
never perish - that He may pay them their wages in full, and give them (even) more, out of His
Grace. Verily! He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense).
(Qur’aan 35:29-30)

 And [mention] Job (Ayyuub), when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me,
and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back]
his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers
[of Allaah]. (Qur’aan 21:83-84)

 They have not appraised Allaah with true appraisal / No just estimate have they made of
Allaah, such as is due to Him / They have not shown Allaah His proper reverence; while the
earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be
folded in His Right Hand. Exalted is He and High above what they associate with Him. (Qur’aan
39:67)

 But among them is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the
Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Qur’aan
2:201)

 So Allaah gave them the reward of this world and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. And

A Few Attributes & Descriptions of Allaah from

Prophetic Narrations (Ahaadeeth)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫( ﷺ‬peace, prayers and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Every important word or matter that does not begin with the remembrance of Allaah is
maimed/deprived.” (Musnad Ahmad, Fathul Bari)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “When Allaah decreed the creation He pledged Himself by
writing in His book which is laid down with Him: ‘Verily, My mercy prevails over My wrath.’”

The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “When Allaah created the creation, He wrote in a book
which is with Him above the Throne: ‘Verily, My mercy predominates over My anger.’”
In another variant, “predominated over My anger,” and in another variant, “preceded/
surpassed My anger.” (Riyaad us-Saaliheen - Muslim, Bukhaari, Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, on the day Allaah, the Exalted, created the
heavens and earth, He created one hundred parts of mercy. Each part can fill what is between
the heaven and earth. Of them, He put one part of mercy on earth; through which a mother
has compassion for her child, animals and birds have compassion for each other. On the Day of
Resurrection, He will perfect and complete this mercy.” (i.e. Allaah will use the remaining
ninety-nine parts of mercy for His servants on that Day).

In another narration, the Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Exalted, has one hundred
parts of mercy, of which He sent down one part of mercy between the jinn, mankind, the
animals and the insects; by means of which they are compassionate and merciful to one
another, and by means of which wild animals are kind to their offspring. And Allaah, the
Exalted, has kept back ninety-nine parts of mercy with which to be merciful to His servants on
the Day of Resurrection.” (Riyaad us-Saaliheen - Muslim, Bukhaari)

 Allaah is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child. (A lesson/point from a
narration of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬in Bukhaari & Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “One of the supplications of David (Dawuud), upon him be
peace, was: ‘O Allaah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the
actions/deeds which will bring me Your love. O Allaah, make Your love more beloved to me
than myself, my family and cold water.’” (Riyaad us-Saliheen - Tirmidhi)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He, said: ‘I am so Self-
Sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate/partner. Thus, he who does an action for
someone else's sake as well as Mine, will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he

associated with Me.’” (Muslim, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a
mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He,
says: ‘Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is
in awe/fear of Me. I have forgiven My servant [his sins] and have admitted him to Paradise.’”
(Nasaa’i)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, said: ‘Spend (on charity), O son of
Adam, and I shall spend on you.’” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “The Right Hand of Allaah is full and spending (the riches)
liberally during day and night will not diminish (the resources of Allaah). Don't you see what
(an enormous amount of resources) He has spent since He created the heaven and the earth,
and what is in His Right Hand has not decreased? His Throne is upon the water. And in His
other Hand is death, and He elevates and degrades (whom He likes).” (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah's Hand is full, and (its fullness) is not affected by
the continuous spending night and day. Do you see what He has spent since He created the
heavens and the earth? Nevertheless, what is in His Hand never decreases, and His Throne was
over the water; and in His Hand there is the balance (of justice) whereby He raises and lowers
(people).” (Bukhaari)

 Abu Musa (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬was
standing amongst us and he told us five things, He said: ‘Verily Allaah, the Exalted and Mighty,
does not sleep, and it does not befit Him to sleep. He lowers and raises the scale/justice. The
deeds in the night are taken up to Him before the deeds of the day, and the deeds of the day
before the deeds of the night. His veil is light. If he withdraws it (the veil), the splendour of His
Face would consume His creation so far as His sight reaches.’” (Muslim)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “....Beware/be afraid of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is
no barrier between it and Allaah.” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

 Umar bin Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “....Beware of the supplication of
the oppressed, for the supplication of the oppressed is answered.” (Muwatta - Imaam Maalik)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “The supplications of three are not turned away (i.e. not
rejected): (i) the fasting person until he breaks his fast, (ii) the just leader/ruler, (iii) and the
supplication of the oppressed person, which is raised by Allaah above the clouds, the gates of
the heaven(s) are opened for it; and the Lord, Mighty and Sublime be He, says: ‘By My might, I
will surely help you, in due time / even if after a while.’” (Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

 Among the sayings the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬related from his Lord, Magnified and Exalted be He, is
that He (Allaah) said:
‘O My servants, I have forbidden oppression/injustice for Myself and have made it forbidden
Page | 66

amongst you, so do not oppress one another.

O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and
I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food
of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed,
so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I
forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.
O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting
Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of
you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that
would not increase My kingdom/dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you
and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked
heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom/dominion in anything.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you
to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he
requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if
put into it (i.e. the minute amount of water on a needle if dipped in and out of the sea).
O My servants, it is but your deeds that I enumerate/record for you and then recompense you
for. So he who finds good should praise Allaah and he who finds other than that should not
blame anyone but himself.’ (Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah)

 Among the sayings the Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬related from his Lord, Glorified and Exalted
be He, is that He said: “Allaah has registered/recorded the good deeds and the bad deeds.
Then He clarified it, [saying]:
- ‘He who intended [to do] a good deed and did not do it – Allaah writes it with Himself as a
complete good deed; and if he intended it and did it – Allaah writes it with Himself as ten good
deeds up to seven hundred times or many times [over that].
- And if he intended [to do] a bad deed and did not do it – Allaah writes it with Himself as a
complete good deed; but if he intended it and did it – Allaah writes it as one bad deed.’”
(Bukhaari & Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, said:
‘Grandeur/magnificence is my cloak and greatness My robe. He who competes with Me in
respect of either of them, I shall cast into Hell-fire.’” (Abu Daawuud, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad)

 Allaah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Exalted and Glorious, says: ‘Glory/might is His
garment and magnificence/grandeur/pride is His cloak; he who contends with Me, I shall
punish him.’” (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said that Allaah, the Almighty, said: “There are three (types of
people) whose adversary I shall be on the Day of Resurrection: (1) A man who has given his
word by Me and has broken it; (2) A man who has sold a free man and has consumed the price

(i.e. a man who has made a slave of another and has sold him); (3) And a man who has hired a
workman, has exacted his due in full from him and has not given him his wage.” (Bukhaari, Ibn
Maajah, Ahmad)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah will say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Where are
those who love one another through My Glory/Majesty? Today I shall give them shade in My
shade, it being a day when there is no shade but My shade.’” (Bukhaari, Maalik)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Almighty, said: ‘My love is a right upon those
who love each other for my sake. My love is a right upon those who visit each other for my
sake. My love is a right upon those who sit together for my sake. My love is a right upon those
who maintain relations for my sake.’” (Musnad Ahmad)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, has said:
‘Whosoever shows enmity to a Waliy (loyal/close friend) of Mine, then I have declared war on
him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the
religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to me with
Nawaafil (supererogatory/additional) deeds until I love him.
When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, and
his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of
Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him
refuge.
I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My
faithful/believing servant: he hates death and I hate hurting/displeasing him.’” (Bukhaari, Imam
Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, said: ‘Truly of those
devoted to Me, the one I most favour, is a believer who is of meagre means and much given to
prayer, who has been particular in the worship of his Lord and has obeyed Him inwardly (i.e. he
has not been ostentatious in his obedience), who was obscure among people and not pointed
out, and whose sustenance was just sufficient to provide for him yet he bore this patiently.’
Then the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬rapped his hand and said: ‘Death will have come early to him, his
mourners will have been few, his estate scant.’” (Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, says: ‘My faithful
servant's reward from Me, if I have taken to Me his dear/best friend/brother from amongst the
people of the world, and he has then borne it patiently for My sake, shall be nothing less than
Paradise.’” (Bukhaari)

 A condolence supplication from the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬: “Verily to Allaah, belongs what He took and
to Him belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed time/fixed term, so
she should be patient and hope for reward from Allaah.” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

(“....It is mercy which Allaah has rooted in the hearts of His servants, and Allaah is merciful only
to His servants who are merciful.”) (Bukhaari, Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬related: “A man said: ‘By Allaah, Allaah will not forgive So-and-
so.’ At this, Allaah, the Almighty, said: ‘Who is he who swears by Me that I will not forgive So-
and-so? Verily, I have forgiven So-and-so and have nullified your [own good] deeds (or as he
said [it]).’” (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “A man sinned greatly against himself, and when death
came to him, he charged his sons, saying: ‘When I have died, burn me, then crush me and
scatter [my ashes] into the sea, for, by Allaah, if my Lord takes possession of me, He will punish
me in a manner in which He has punished no one [else].’ So they did that to him.

Then He (Allaah) said to the earth: ‘Produce what you have taken and there he was!’ - (the
man was resurrected). And He (Allaah) said to him: ‘What induced you to do what you did?’
He said: ‘Being afraid of You, O my Lord’ (or he said: ‘Being frightened of You’); and because of
that He (Allaah) forgave him.” (Muslim, Bukhaari, Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “A servant [of Allaah] committed a sin and said: ‘O Allaah,
forgive me my sin.’ And He, Glorified and Exalted be He, said: ‘My servant has committed a sin
and has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for them.’
Then he sinned again and said: ‘O Lord, forgive me my sin.’ And He, Glorified and Exalted be
He, said: ‘My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins
and punishes for them.’
Then he sinned again and said: ‘O Lord, forgive me my sin.’ And He, Glorified and Exalted be
He, said: ‘My servant has committed a sin and has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins
and punishes for sins. Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.’” (Muslim, Bukhaari)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Exalted, said: ‘O son of Adam, so long as you
call upon Me and implore Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind.
O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask
forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with nearly
the earth's capacity of sins and then meet Me, without associating anything with Me, I will
bring you with nearly its capacity of forgiveness.’” (Tirmidhi, Ahmad - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven (heaven of this
world) in the last third of every night, and He says: ‘Who is calling upon Me that I may answer
him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may
forgive him?’” (Bukhaari, Muslim, Maalik, Tirmidhi, Abu Daawuud)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Every one of you will have his/her supplications
answered, as long as he is not impatient and says: I have supplicated but I was not answered.”
(Bukhaari, Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “The servant will continue to have his supplications
answered as long as he does not supplicate for sin or cutting family ties and he is not
impatient.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allaah, what is impatience?” He ‫ ﷺ‬said, “It is one's
saying, ‘I have supplicated again and again, but I have not seen an answer.’ He becomes
frustrated with that and gives up supplicating.” (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “A supplication should be made in full confidence and one
should persistently express his desire (before Allaah) in his supplication, for no bounty is too
great for Allaah to bestow (upon his servants).” (Riyaad us-Saaliheen - Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah is more pleased/delighted with the repentance of
His servant than would be one of you who were to lose his riding camel in a barren desert,
which carries his provision of food and drink. Having lost all hope (of finding it), he lies down in
the shade of a tree and despairs over his camel; when all of a sudden he finds the camel
standing over him. He takes hold of its reins and then out of boundless joy blurts out: ‘O Allaah,
You are my servant and I am your Lord.’ He makes a mistake due to his extreme joy.” (Riyaad us-
Saaliheen - Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah said: ‘I have prepared for My righteous servants
what no eye has seen and no ear has heard, nor has it occurred to human heart.’” (Bukhaari,
Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah)

 On the authority of Masruq, who said: “We asked Abdullaah (i.e. Ibn Mas’uud) about this
verse: ‘And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allaah as dead. Rather,
they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.’ (Qur’aan 3:169)
He said: We asked about that and the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: ‘Their souls are in the insides of
green birds having lanterns suspended from the Throne, roaming freely in Paradise where they
please, then taking shelter in those lanterns. So their Lord cast a glance at them (i.e. at those
who had been killed in the cause of Allaah) and said: ‘Do you wish for anything?’
They said: ‘What shall we wish for when we roam freely in Paradise where we please?’ And
thus did He do to them (ask them) three times. When they saw that they would not be spared
from being asked [again], they said: ‘O Lord, we would like for You to put back our souls into
our bodies so that we might fight for Your sake once again.’ And when He saw that they were
not in need of anything, they were let be.’” (Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah will say to the inhabitants of Paradise:
‘O inhabitants of Paradise!’ They will say: ‘O our Lord, we present ourselves and are at Your
pleasure, and goodness rests in Your Hands.’ Then He will say: ‘Are you contented/satisfied?’
And they will say: ‘And how should we not be contented, O Lord, when You have given to us
that which You have given to no one else of Your creation?’ Then He will say: ‘Would you not
like Me to give you something better than that?’ And they will say: ‘O Lord and what thing is
better than that?’ And He will say: ‘I shall cause My favour/pleasure to descend upon you and

thereafter shall never be displeased with you.’” (Bukhaari, Muslim, Tirmidhi)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Satan said: ‘By Your might, O Lord, I will continue to
mislead the children of Adam, as long as their souls are in their bodies.’ The Lord said: ‘By My
Might and Majesty, I will continue to forgive them, as long as they seek My forgiveness.’”
(Musnad Ahmad)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allaah the
Blessed and the Exalted, will say: ‘Would you like anything more?’ They will say: ‘Have You not
brightened our faces? Have You not admitted us into Paradise and saved us from Hellfire?’
He (the narrator) said: He (Allaah) would then lift the veil, and of things given to them, nothing
would be more beloved to them than looking at their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious.
Then, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬recited the verse: ‘For those who have done good is the best and even
more.’” (Qur’aan 10:26) (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah does not look at your figures, nor at your
attire/appearance, but rather He looks at your hearts and actions.” (Riyad us-Saaliheen - Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah does not look at your attire/appearance or
wealth, but rather He looks at your hearts and actions.” (Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah, the Exalted, is Rafeeq (The Gentle) and He
loves gentleness. He rewards for gentleness what is not granted for harshnesss, and He does
not reward anything else like it.” (Muslim, Mishkaat ul-Masaabeeh)
 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah loves gentleness in all matters/affairs.” (Bukhaari)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Exalted and Glorious, will seize/grasp the
earth on the Day of Resurrection and He will roll up the heavens in His Right Hand. Then He will
say: ‘I am the King/Sovereign, where are the kings of the earth?’” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “The most vile man to Allaah on the Day of Resurrection,
and the most filthy and most wretched / worst person who deserves His wrath most; is a man
who was named the ‘King of Kings’ – yet there is no (true & real) King but Allaah.” (Muslim)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Every deed of a day is sealed up. When a believer falls ill, the angels
say: ‘O our Lord! Your servant so-and-so has fallen ill.’ The Lord, the Exalted, says: ‘Note
down to his credit the same deeds, he was doing before illness, until he heals up or dies.’”
(Musnad Ahmad)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “A man from among those who were before you was
called to account. Nothing in the way of good was found for him except that he used to have
dealings / mix with people and, being well-off/wealthy, he would order his servants to let off
the man in straitened circumstances [from repaying his debt].” The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah

said: ‘We are worthier than him of that (of being so generous). Let him off.’” (Muslim, Bukhaari,
Nasaa’i)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “There is no day on which Allaah frees more of His
servants from the Hellfire than the day of ‘Arafah. He draws near and then boasts of them to
the angels, saying: ‘What do these servants seek/want?’” - (so that He may pardon them,
answer their prayers, give them, etc.). (Muslim)

 ‘Aaisha (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “All praise be to Allaah, Whose hearing
encompasses all voices.” (Bukhaari, Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬mentioned about Ihsaan (excellence, good conduct, proficiency
in religion): “It is to worship Allaah as if you see Him, for you do not see Him but He certainly
sees you.” (Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Indeed, Allaah, the Exalted, is Tayyib (Pure, Good,
Perfect) and accepts only that which is good/pure. Verily, Allaah has commanded the believers
to do what He commanded the messengers, and He, the Exalted, said: ‘O messengers, eat of
the good things and work righteousness.’ (Qur’aan 23:51) And He, the Exalted, said: ‘O you who
have believed, eat from the good things with which We have provided you.’” (Qur’aan 2:172)
(Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “One day I was [mounted] behind the
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, and he said to me, ‘Young man, I will teach you words [of advice]:

Be mindful of Allaah – He will protect you. Be mindful of Allaah – you will find Him before you.
When you ask, ask Allaah. When you seek help, seek help from Allaah. Know that if the [whole]
nation assembled in order to benefit you with something, they could not benefit you except by
something Allaah had already decreed/recorded for you. And if they assembled in order to
harm you with something, they could not harm you except with something Allaah had already
decreed/recorded for you. The pens have been lifted, and the pages have dried.’”

In another narration, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Be mindful of Allaah – you will find Him in front
of you. Come to know Allaah in times of ease – He will know you in times of hardship. And
know that whatever missed you, could not have struck you; and whatever struck you could not
have missed you. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease
with hardship.” (Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith, Tirmidhi)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Purity is half of faith, and Alhamdu Lillaah (Praise be to
Allaah) fills the scale. Subhan-Allaah wal-Hamdu Lillaah (Exalted be Allaah and Praise be to
Allaah) fill what is between the heaven and earth.” (Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Indeed, Allaah, the Exalted, has imposed [religious]
obligations, so do not neglect them. And He has set limits, so do not overstep them. And He
has prohibited things, so do not violate them. And He has kept silent about [certain] things out

of mercy to you, not forgetfulness – so do not search them out.” (Daraqutni - Imam Nawawi’s 40
Hadith)

 A man came to the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and said: “O Messenger of Allaah, direct me to a deed which,

when I have done it, Allaah will love me and people will love me.” So he (‫ )ﷺ‬said, “Be
indifferent toward [pleasures of] the world and Allaah will love you, and be indifferent toward
what people possess and people will love you.” (Ibn Maajah - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Whoever relieves a believer of a distress from the distresses of this
world – Allaah will relieve him of a distress from the distresses of the Day of Resurrection. And
whoever facilitates [a matter] for one in financial difficulty – Allaah will facilitate for him
[matters] in this world and the Hereafter. And whoever covers [the fault of] a Muslim – Allaah
will cover his [faults] in this world and the Hereafter. Allaah is in aid of / helps [His] servant, as
long as the servant is in aid of his brother. And whoever follows a path seeking knowledge
therein – Allaah will facilitate for him a path to Paradise. No people assemble in one of the
houses of Allaah, reciting the Book of Allaah and studying it among themselves, but that
tranquillity descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allaah
mentions them among those with Him. And he whose deeds slow him down will not be
accelerated by his lineage.” (Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, says: Fasting is Mine/for Me and it
is I Who gives reward for it. [A person] gives up his/her sexual passion, his food and his drink
for My sake. Fasting is like a shield, and he who fasts has two joys: a joy when he breaks his
fast and a joy when he meets his Lord. The change in the breath of the mouth of him/her who
fasts is better in Allaah's estimation than the smell of musk.” (Bukhaari, Muslim, Maalik, Tirmidhi,
Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Indeed, Allaah commanded Yahya (John - peace be upon him), the son
of Zakariyya (Zechariah - peace be upon him), to abide by five commands, and to order the
Children of Israel to abide by them. But he was slow in carrying out these commands.

So ‘Eesa (Jesus - peace be upon him) said: ‘Indeed Allaah commanded you with five
commandments to abide by, and to command the Children of Israel to abide by. Either you
command them, or I shall command them.’ So Yahya said: ‘I fear that if you precede me in this,
then the earth may swallow me, or I shall be punished.’ So he gathered the people in Bayt al-
Maqdis (the Mount of Masjid al-Aqsa, Temple Mount in Jerusalem), and they filled the Masjid.
He sat on the balcony, thanked Allaah and praised Him and then said: ‘Indeed Allaah has
commanded me with five commandments to abide by, and to command you to abide by.

(1) The first of them is that you worship Allaah and not associate anything with him. The
parable of the one who associates others with Allaah, is that of a man who buys a servant with
his own gold or paper/silver, then he says to him: “This is my home and this is my business so
take care of it and give me the profits.” So he takes care of it and gives the profits to someone

other than his master. Which of you would like to have a servant like that? Allaah created you
and sustains and provides for you. Therefore, worship Him alone and do not associate anything
with Him.
(2) And verily, Allaah commands you to perform prayer (Salaah). And when you perform
prayer, then do not turn away, for Allaah directs His Face towards His servant’s face, as long as
he does not turn away.
(3) And He commands you with fasting. For indeed the parable of fasting, is that of a man in a
group with a sachet containing musk. All of them enjoy its fragrance. Indeed, the breath/odour
of the fasting person is better / more pleasant to Allaah than the scent of musk.
(4) And He commands you to give charity. The parable of that, is a man who was captured by
the enemy. They tied his hands to his neck and brought him forth to cut off his neck. The man
says to them: ‘Can I pay a ransom for myself?’ He kept ransoming himself with small and large
amounts until he liberated himself.
(5) And He commands you to remember Allaah much. For indeed the parable of that, is like a
man being pursued at speed by the enemy until he reaches a protected/impermeable fortress
in which he protects himself from them. Likewise is the servant, he does not protect himself
from the Shaytaan (Satan) except by the remembrance of Allaah.’

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “And I command you with five that Allaah has commanded me:
(1)to listen, (2) to obey, (3) Jihaad, (4) Hijrah (emigration), and (5) the Jamaa'ah (community). For
indeed whoever parts from the Jamaa'ah the measure of a hand-span, has cast off the yoke of
Islaam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of / uses the slogans of
Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance), then he will be from the coal/rubble of Hell.” A
man said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Even if he prays (performs Salaah) and fasts?” He ‫ﷺ‬
replied: “Even if he prays and fasts. So call with the call that Allaah named you with: Muslims,
believers, servants/worshipers of Allaah.” (Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad, Tafseer Ibn Kathir - Volume 1)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah has overlooked for me from my nation
[what is done in] error/mistakes, and forgetfulness, and what they are compelled/coerced to
do.” (Ibn Maajah, Bayhaqi - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah is Jameel (The One Full of Beauty) and He loves beauty.”
(Muslim)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah is Jawaad (The Magnanimous, Bestower of Good) and He loves
magnanimity. He loves excellent moral character and detests meanness/low morals.” (As-Sunan
al-Kubraa – Bayhaqi. Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Imaan. Musnad Ibn Abi Shaybah)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Indeed, Allaah is Hayyiy (The Shy, Possessor of Modesty), and Kareem
(The Generous). He is Shy when His servant raises/outstretches his hands to Him (in

supplication), to return them empty, disappointed, with nothing.” (Tirmidhi, Abu Daawuud, Sunan
Ibn Maajah)

 The Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Indeed, Allaah, the Exalted, is Hayyiy (The Shy, Possessor of
Modesty), and Sitteer [The Coverer/Concealer [of people’s faults/shortcomings/sins)]. He loves
modesty, shyness and concealment, covering. Therefore when any of you bathe, let him cover
himself (i.e. from the sight of people).” (Sunan Abu Daawuud, Sunan an-Nasaa’i, Musnad Ahmad)

 The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah is Muhsin (The Doer & Giver of good, One Who does
perfect good), and He loves Ihsaan (good conduct, excellence, fairness).” (Mu’jam at-Tabaraanee
al-Awsat 5735)

 The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Verily, Allaah has enjoined Ihsaan (excellence, good
conduct) for all things.” (Muslim - Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith)

Thinking Good and Positively of Allaah (Husnudh-Dhann Billaah)

Husnudh-Dhann Billaah: To think positively of Allaah, assuming good about Allaah, having good
thoughts of Allaah, to hope good from Allaah, having good expectations of Allaah – all with sincere
and strong certainty.

Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the
mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He Who is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most
Merciful.” (Qur’aan 39:53)

[Ibraaheem (Abraham)] said: “And who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are
astray/misguided?” (Qur’aan 15:56)

[Ya'quub (Jacob) said]: “O my sons, go and find out about Yuusuf (Joseph) and his brother
(Binyaameen - Benjamin) and do not lose hope / despair not of mercy/relief from Allaah. Indeed,
no one despairs of mercy/relief from Allaah except the disbelieving people.” (Qur’aan 12:87)

[Allaah] said, “My punishment - I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses / embraces
all things.” (Qur’aan 7:156)

The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, Mighty and Sublime be He, said: ‘If My servant loves
to meet Me, I love to meet him; and if he dislikes to meet Me, I dislike to meet him.’” (Bukhaari,
Maalik, Nasaa’i)

The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Whoever loves to meet Allaah, Allaah loves to meet him.
Whoever dislikes/hates to meet Allaah, Allaah hates to meet him.” (Muslim)

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Almighty, said: ‘I am as My servant thinks I am / expects
Me to be (1). If he thinks good of Me, he will have it. If he thinks evil of Me, he will have it.’” (Musnad
Ahmad) (1) One must always truly think positively of Allaah, the Exalted.

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Allaah, the Almighty, said: ‘I am as My servant thinks I am / expects Me
to be. I am with him when he makes mention of/remembers Me. If he makes mention of Me to
himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an
assembly/gathering, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to

Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to
him at speed/running.’” (Bukhaari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah)

Ibn Hajar comments on this narration: {Allaah says, “I am as my servant thinks of Me.”} Meaning:
I am capable of behaving towards him in the manner he assumes I will behave with him.
Al-Karmaani said, “In this wording, there is encouragement to give precedence to one’s hope (in
Allaah) over fear (of Him).” Perhaps he says this as it pertains to the issue of whether one’s hope
and fear should be equal. When any rational person hears such hadeeth, he would not first
assume and expect Allaah’s threat of punishment, which would be the side of fearing of Allaah,
because he would not initially choose that for himself. Rather, he would lean more toward
expecting Allaah’s promise of reward, the side of hoping in Allaah. (Fathul Baari)

An-Nawawi comments: Regarding His statement, {“I am as my servant thinks of Me”}, Al-Qaadi
reports that it has been said to mean, he will be forgiven when he seeks forgiveness, his
repentance will be accepted when he repents, he will be answered when he supplicates, and he
will be sufficed when he asks for what he has to be sufficient for him. It has also been explained as
hope and expecting to have one’s sins pardoned, and this is more correct. (Sharh Saheeh Muslim)

Ibn al-Qayyim said: One of the greatest sins in the sight of Allaah is to assume the worst and have
bad thoughts about Him. Were someone to think badly about Allaah, they would have assumed
things about Him that contradicts His holy perfection, and that contradicts the reality of His names
and characteristics.
(Qur’aan 41:23): ‘And that was your (evil, false) assumption which you assumed about your Lord.
It has brought you to ruin/doom, and you have become (this Day) among the losers.’

Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: ‘Verily the believer thinks positively of his
Lord, therefore he does righteous deeds; and the evildoer thinks negatively of his Lord, therefore
he does evil deeds.’ (Narrated by Ahmad in Az-Zuhd P. 402)

Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬say, three days
before his death: “None of you should die except thinking positively of Allaah / having good
thoughts about Allaah, the Exalted and Glorious.” (Muslim)

An-Nawawi comments: Regarding the statement of the Prophet ‫“{ ﷺ‬None of you should die
except while he is having good thoughts about Allaah”}, scholars have said that this is a warning
against losing hope and despairing (of Allaah’s mercy), and an encouragement to have hope
especially at the time of death.

Page | 82
A FEW NAMES, A T T R I B U T E S & DESCRIPTIONS OF ALLAAH

Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He, also said in the previous hadeeth {“I am as my servant thinks of
Me.”} and (considering both hadeeth) scholars explain that {“having good thoughts about Allaah”}
means that an individual should expect Allaah to have mercy on him and pardon him. (Sharh Saheeh
Muslim)

The Messenger of Allaah ‫ ﷺ‬said: “When one of you supplicates, let him be determined (ask
in full confidence) in the supplication and one should not say: ‘O Allaah, give me if you will’ – for
none can coerce Allaah.” (Bukhaari & Muslim)

Ibn Hajar comments on this tradition, saying: ‘The meaning of determination is to be persistent in
the supplication and to affirm that what is asked will occur.’ (Fathul Baari)

An-Nawawi writes: ‘It is to have ‘Husnudh-Dhann’ – thinking good and positively of Allaah, good
expectations that Allaah, the Exalted, will answer you.’ (Sharh Saheeh Muslim)

Concluding Supplications

‘Exalted and Glorified is Your Lord, the Lord of Honour, Power and Might – above what they
ascribe to Him.

And peace be upon the Messengers.

And praise be to Allaah, the Lord, Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds.’
(Qur’aan 37:180-182)

“Our Lord, do not condemn / impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.”
(Qur’aan 2:286)

‘How perfect You are O Allaah, and I praise You. I bear witness that none has the right to be
worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.’
[Supplication - Hisnul Muslim]

All praise and thanks are due to Allaah alone, the Lord, Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds.
Peace, blessings and prayers of Allaah be upon all the Prophets and Messengers. Peace, blessings
and prayers of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, the final prophet, and upon his family, his
companions and all those who follow in their footsteps until the Day of Judgment.
