1. GENERAL DESCRPTION

The Model PE20 Alarm Annunciator monitors the status and status changes of isolated alarm contacts. Changes
are indicated by flashing LED’s. Momentary changes are also detected and latched in until acknowledged. First Out
indications can be detected by setting up the unit during the power up cycle. This unit is designed for industrial
applications using microprocessor based CMOS technology, which ensures low power consumption and high
reliability.

The number of alarm points monitored is 20. The sequence of operation is either ISA ”A” or “F1A”. A Common
Alarm and Horn Relay output are generated whenever there is an alarm. Each alarm input can be configured to
allow operation from a N/O or N/C field contact.

Power input to the unit is specified at time of order and can be 24, 48, 125Vdc or 115/220Vac. The power supply is
mounted internal to the unit.

The PE20 Annunciator is supplied as a panel mounted unit ready for the customer to drop into a single cut out.

Caution: All Wiring by Qualified Personnel Only, Hazardous Voltages May be Present.
Note that the Screw Terminals can be removed and wired separately from the unit and then snapped firmly onto the
unit after the wiring is complete Contacts are usually wired first and then the Power Inputs.

ALARM OPTO
The PE20 Annunciator uses low current Opto-Isolator CONTACT
circuitry for all Alarm Inputs. Both NO and NC Inputs are INPUT
supported on a point by point basis. Inputs are filtered by a
fixed bounce eliminator lasting 0.2 seconds. Only when Cx
this period is finished will a logic change be recognized on
a corresponding input.
Rx
Factory default is for internal 24Vdc Wetting voltage to
energize the users Dry Contacts.

7. POWER INPUTS

Caution:
Always check the PE20’s Rear Panel for the correct Power Input Voltage.
The PE20 only accepts the correct voltage as listed on the Rear Panel.
Wiring the wrong Voltage can seriously damage the unit.

Exercise Extreme Caution when working with Hazardous AC or 125 Vdc!!!

PE20 Models are available with Power Options for 110, 220 Vac, 125 Vdc, 48 Vdc, and 24 Vdc.
Power Inputs are always wired to Screw Terminals 16 & 17.

Important:
A 1/8 Amp external Fuse in series with the “L” or + VDC Screw Terminal is Required.
Wire the appropriate voltage for your model as shown below.

8. RELAY OUTPUTS / EXTERNAL PUSHBUTTONS – OPTIONAL USE

HORN RELAY
The Normally Open Horn Relay (screw terminals 1 & 2) are active whenever one or more Alarm points are active
(flashing window) and have not been Acknowledged. An Acknowledge will Reset this Relay.
An internal Factory RC snubber circuit is across the Relay contacts. The purpose of this circuit is to reduce the
possibility of the contacts welding together when switching high current DC loads. When solid state AC Horns are
used, low AC current passes thru the snubber allowing very efficient (minimal current) Horns to produce a constant
low-level sound. To correct this, place a Diode in series with the AC horn (Solid State type only) as shown.

COMMON ALARM RELAY

The Common Alarm / Power Fail Relay (screw terminals 3 & 4) are active whenever any Contact Input is in the
Alarm State. It only Resets when All Contact Inputs are return to the Normal Cleared State (No Alarms). An

9. TESTING
On Power Turn-On, all 20 Red LED’s light for ~ 2 to 3 Seconds. Horn and Common Relays are Off.

Test Pushbutton

The Test Pushbutton when pressed will activate All Alarm Point LED’s Flashing simultaneously and activating the
Horn Relay (Common Alarm Relay remains Off).

Verify the correct response when the Test Pushbutton is activated. Press ACK to Reset all Alarms / Relays.

One at a time, simulate each Alarm Contact.

Verify that the corresponding Red LED is Flashing and both Relays are On.

Press the ACK Pushbutton.

If the Contact is still in Alarm (Non-Momentary Alarm);
Verify that the Flashing Red LED turns Solid Red.
Verify Common Alarm Relay is still On and Horn Relay is now Off.

If the Contact has returned to Normal (Momentary Alarm);

Verify that the Flashing Red LED turns Off.
Verify both Relays are now Off.

10. PROGRAMMING - NO/NC INPUTS AND ISA SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

The PE20 allows a mixture of Normally Open or Normally Closed dry contact alarm as inputs. Factory default is
Normally Open.

To reconfigure the Inputs to Learn the current NO/NC Status;

1) Connect all the inputs and verify that they are in their normal state of no alarm.
2) Power up the unit,
3) On the Rear Panel, use an opened Paper Clip to Press the recessed “SET” Pushbutton and hold for
5 seconds.

Verify that the unit is configured properly for NO/NC Contacts.

The PE20 can be configured for the standard sequence ISA-A (default) or ISA-F1A as shown;

To change from one sequence to another:

1) Turn Power off.
2) Wait a few seconds for Power to fully discharge.
3) Turn Power on while holding down ACK and TEST buttons simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.

Simulate at least two (2) alarms to verify sequence:

If both points flash, unit is in ISA-A mode.
If one point is flashing and the second point Alarm comes on steady, unit is in ISA-F1A mode.

11. REMOVING THE ALARM LEGEND FROM THE FRONT PANEL

To remove the front panel to access the alarm labels:

1) Insert a small screwdriver into the half circle on the front panel and carefully bend the lip of the frame partially
away from the front panel.

2) Place a second small screwdriver, between the half-circle and the upper tab and carefully pry the tab releases.

3) Once the upper tab releases place the second screwdriver between the lower tab and half-circle (keeping the
first screwdriver in the place in the half-circle) and carefully pry unit the lower tab releases.

Once these two tabs release the panel will easily slide out the tabs on the numbered side of the front panel.
Remove the legend strip and label with your alarm points.
