SAFETY

2.1 Safety in Plant

Company has more safety at plant site. The pipeline for hydrant runs with the
boundary wall and they install fifteen (15) hydrants at site. The underground tank
for firefighting storage has a capacity of 432m3. Hydrants keep maintaining the
pressure of 6-8 bars which helps them to a long covering area in case of fire.

There are two types of reels for hydrants, HOSE REEL and HOSE REEL HOSE.
Hose reel hose has a triple function i.e. on/off, Jet and smuggling. There is a retention
pit for recycling of water in case of fire which has an area of 400m3. Also has a diesel
storage tank both underground and above ground has a capacity of 16000 liters and
1620 liters for emergency supply. There is a CO2 gas suppression system for die
fumes high temperature. They also install scrubbers for ammision of gases to protect
the environment. Every time they test the scrubbers. Recently Company has install
Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. There is also a pump room for hydrants in case power
failure it works on emergency plan. A SUZUKI van stand by for emergency
casualities.
There are some safety measures given below

CHAPTER 03
INTERNSHIP

3.1 Internship Program

During My internship period I was part of maintenance department. 1st

week I was given the safety information and 6s training, next week I was
given a project on energy consumption of the company and I calculate the
total number of energies consume by the company.

3.2 Introduction of Department

The responsibilities of the department are as follows:

3.2.1 Inspection

Routine Inspection include to check the facilities of the plant and needed repairs.
This ensures the efficiency and condition of the equipment. Inspection depends on
the use of the equipment. During maintenance items inspected and check the
feasibility of repairs. Maintenance items fitness to be checked when received by the
vendors.

3.2.2 Engineering

This included to minimize the breakdowns by means of alterations and repairing

the equipments. Department responsible for the constructional projects which is the
part of the plant. Consulting also included about the plant’s improvements.

9|Page
3.2.3 Preventive Maintenance

This involves the maintenance of the existing plant. Minor installation of the
equipment and maintenance before it gets out of order. Responsible also to prevent
the breakdowns by applying lubrications, repairs and adjustments.

3.2.4 Clerical Jobs

Maintenance department also responsible for:

1. Keep the record of purchasing.

2. Work orders by giving other departments
3. Administration and supervision of labor
4. Pertain to important features about building, electrical systems, cranes,
cooling water tower, water and air flow lines, vacuum lines and oil
lines.

However, maintenance department focuses on the two types of the maintenance:

1. Preventive Maintenance
2. Safety, Maintenance and corrective operations

3.3 Preventive Maintenance

maintenance department very passionate to their work. The workers and technicians
give their full efforts to keep the plant from the breakdown. Preventive maintenance
is all about their passion. I learn many things in this department. My supervisor and
maintenance technician Mr. Asif and Mr. Farhan give me full support to learn as I
can.

During my internship we did preventive maintenance of many extruders and

granular mixer and high-speed mixer. When we work, we check first:

 To off the main supply.

 Then install the preventive maintenance board

10 | P a g e
 Then log out tag out system install
 Check the amperes of the Solid-State Relay (SSR*)
 Check the solenoid valves* as they working properly.
 Check the extruder’s safety shields.

Then we repair or maintain the any other accessories. Sometimes we change the SSR
and sometimes we change the solenoid valves. During preventive maintenance we
also changed the vacuum pump pipes. Sometimes we change the heating element of
the different heating zone. During preventive of the granular mixers, we change the
magnetic safety switch and check the rpm of the mixers to ensure that it work
properly. To check the rpm of the mixer we paste a strip on it then use solar gun after
starting the mixer.

After maintenance we hand over the machine to the related operator. Then he checks
and if it works properly, he said ok. Then we documented the maintenance and check
list fill up provided by the clerical staff. When machine is ok then operator signed it
and as well as we signed. The typical preventing hours on machine is 8 hours.

3.4 Safety, Maintenance and Corrective Operations

It is same like preventive maintenance. Only difference between them is preventive
actions take place after weekly, quarterly, semesterly or annually before the machine
or equipment gets out of order. SAMACO does when the machine or equipment gets
out of order.

During my internship days we did many SAMACO of the extruders, pelletizer,

granular mixer and high-speed mixer. The essential steps before going on this
operation same as in preventive maintenance. Then we change or repair the
equipment or machine.

3.5 Conclusion
Avient is multinational company and working very accurately. Maintenance Department is playing very
important role here and the team is also very talented and enthusiastic. And specifically Team Leader
Head of Engineering Mr. Rizwan. Here I learn many thing which i never knew and experience new things,

11 | P a g e
Specially SAMACO and Preventive Maintenance, which play very important role in meeting the required
target and Health and Safety of employees. I also take part in project and share some ideas and learn
how a project is done what are necessary things to do. In the end i suggest that Lock out and tag out
should be installed by the machine operator and uninstall by Maintenance operator.
