POST-ACTIVITY 4
Choose one from among the environmental problems that you identified in the pre-activity and
state your own solution for it.

SOLUTION FOR: WATER POLLUTION

 Dispose of Toxic Chemicals Properly- Household chemicals, pesticides, and cleaners

may appear harmless at first glance. Bleach, paint, paint thinner, ammonia, and a variety
of other chemicals, on the other hand, are becoming a serious problem. When millions of
people dump dangerous substances down the drain or flush them down the toilet every
month, the effects add up. It is why proper waste disposal is critical. Many chemicals
found in the home can be recycled. Your neighborhood may have a recycling facility
where you can recycle old paint, used motor oil, and other chemicals. In some areas,
community collection centers and drop-off sites are also available. Your community may
even have a toxic waste collection day where you can drop off those hazardous old
chemicals for safe disposal. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other
automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Both of them end at
the river.
 You can avoid problems with household fertilizers and pesticides by avoiding products
that contain persistent and dangerous chemicals. Non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners,
as well as pesticides, are now widely available. Spending a little more money on those
items reduces water pollution instantly. DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications,
or other drugs down the toilet.
 Do Not Pour Grease and Fat Down the Drain - Grease, fat, and used cooking oil
should be thrown away or kept in a "fat jar" to be disposed of with several other solid
waste. It's possible that your pipes will clog, causing sewer pipes to clog and back up
into yards and basements. Local bodies of water are also contaminated by the waste.
 Dispose of Medical Waste Properly- Don't ever flush medications down the toilet, and
never throw them away in a pond or creek. The drugs build up in the water, as well as in
fish and other wildlife. Hormones and other compounds contaminate drinking water used
by people and livestock, causing a variety of health problems in fish and birds.
 Report Water Polluters- Many incidents of illegal waste disposal as well as other forms
of water pollution go unnoticed, and they are frequently not cleaned up. People who pour
oil down storm drains, throw trash bags into streams, and so on should be reported.
 Try to Avoid Plastic Containers- Plastic bags and plastic rings from six-packs of
beverages pollute the nation's lakes and seas to a great extent. In the water, plastic
water bottles can last for decades. Instead, invest in some reusable cloth or plastic
grocery bags. Drinks should be stored in reusable, insulated containers, and filtered
water should be made at home.
 Keep Your Vehicles from Leaking- Vehicles leak oil and other fluids, which end up in
the local water table or run off into creeks and streams. This runoff problem is simple to
solve; simply maintain and repair your vehicles on a regular basis. Leaky seals, hoses,
and gaskets are prone to causing costly mechanical problems in the first place, so
replacing them can save you money.
