QUIZ No. 5
Solve the following problems completely and correctly. Box your final answers.

Situation 1 – The tied column shown has dimensions of B = 300 mm and T = 375 mm. It is to be used in a frame braced
against sidesway. The column is hinged at both ends and bent in single curvature about y-axis and has an unsupported
length of 4 m. The column carries an axial factored load 𝑃𝑢 = 488 kN, service dead load = 151.5 kN, and a service end
moment of both 𝑀1 and 𝑀2 = 116 kN-m. Use magnified moment method by using interaction diagram. If 𝑓𝑐′ = 27.6 MPa
and 𝑓𝑦 = 414.6 MPa.

a. Compute the moment magnifier factor. (3 pts)

b. Compute the eccentricity. (3 pts)
c. Determine the reinforcement needed using 20 mm bar. (3 pts)

Situation 2 – The 350 mm x 500 mm column shown is reinforced with 8 – 28 mm ϕ bars arranged around the column
perimeter. A factored load 𝑃𝑢 = 1300 kN is to be applied with eccentricities 𝑒𝑦 = 75 mm and 𝑒𝑥 = 150 mm. 𝑓𝑐′ = 27.6 MPa
and 𝑓𝑦 = 415 MPa. Check the adequacy of the column using Bresler’s Equation. (10 pts)
Situation 3 – A short rectangular, reinforced concrete column is 300 mm x 375 mm is shown in the figure. It is reinforced
with 6 – 28 mm ϕ bars. 𝑓𝑐′ = 27.6 MPa and 𝑓𝑦 = 414 MPa. Neglect the area of concrete displaced by the compression
steel bar.

a. Determine the balance load. (3 pts)

b. Determine the balance moment. (3 pts)
c. Determine the balance eccentricity. (2 pts)

Situation 4 – A 600 mm diameter column contains 20-28 mm ϕ bars arranged in a circle. It has a spiral bar diameter of
10 mm which has a clear cover of 40 mm. Maximum size of aggregate is 25 mm. 𝑓𝑐′ = 21 MPa and 𝑓𝑦 = 345 MPa.

a. Determine the spiral steel ratio. (4 pts)

b. Determine the required spacing of the spirals. (3 pts)
c. Determine the clear spacing between longitudinal bars. (4 pts)

Situation 5 - Using the alignment charts, determine the effective length factors for columns CD and DE for the braced
frame shown. Assume that the beams are 300 mm × 500 mm and the columns are 300 mm × 400 mm. Use NSCP 2015
Approximation for First Order Analysis. Assume 𝛹𝐶 = 10. (12 pts)
