1. WHAT IS THE MAJOR ROLE OF THE FOREIGN TRADERS IN
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ART IN THE PHILIPPINES?

Foreign traders create a vital role to the development of arts in the Philippines.

Trading is a concept involving the buying and selling of goods and services or the

exchange of goods or services between two or more parties. In the early stage, some

Chinese potteries found in the Philippines are from the late Tang and Northern Sung

dynasties in the 10th century A.D. By this, the early Filipinos was able to absorb certain

changes and apply it to their daily lives. Most common finds made by Chinese ceramic

artist and technicians are figurines, ceramics, dishes, bowls, vases and boxes. Such

artworks have also been found in the graves of Pre-Spanish Filipinos, as well as in the

homes of mountain people.

Moreover, with these influences by the foreign traders’ arts in the Philippines

carries on some varied characteristics and creates great influence to the evolution of

arts. In the long run, Filipinos tend to improve and development this influences and able

to give more reasonable and artistic arts which we still have today. Foreign traders’ arts

stand to be the base of arts wherein Filipino try to think on how they can be more

useful and should be in accordance with our cultures and beliefs.

2. Describe the female and male art of the southwestern
Philippine art.

The southwestern side of the Philippines is under Islamic influences which their

religion is Islam and they called their God “Allah”. Way before the Spanish colonizers

arrive here in the Philippines and spread Christianity, Islam is the main religion in our

country given the fact that our neighboring countries like Indonesia have the same

religion with us. These are mainly the maranaos, Tausug, badjao and maguindanaoans.

They called their decorative and ornamental art as “Okir” or “Okil”. As the time goes by,

Islam influences to arts have formed a distinct and developed descriptive characteristics.

Hence, male arts are commonly in curvilinear design contained by or consisting

of a curved line or lines. Masculine decorative arts compose of circle, bird, leaf, fern, and

flowers. This picture is an example of Islamic male art which is carved in a wood. This are

consisting of ferns and curvy structures and has flowers shape figures.
Furthermore, female art focuses in geometric forms defined by two-dimensional

faces enclosed by lines that connect a set of vertices. Female decorative compose of

circle, artificial moon, square, rectangle, diamond and zigzag. This is an example of

female art which we obviously see that it consist of geometric shapes like squares and

rectangles.

4. Describe the major works of art from minor arts.

Major arts involve man skill to create works of art that are in form, content, and

execution. It is notable and conspicuous in effect dignity. Examples of major arts are

painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music, and dance. On the other hand, Minor

arts have aesthetic factor of minor arts is styling and sight. Examples of minor arts are

decorative arts, popular arts, graphic arts, plastic arts, and industrial arts.

In differentiating both major and minor, in my own understanding major arts

are the raw arts meaning it includes the bases of the minor arts. When the major arts

establish their artworks, minor enters the stage wherein base on the definition he/she

put some decorative ideas and improve its states through styling. The best example of

major and minor arts is a crown because the major arts that involves in here is the

making of the base on the crown which including of sculpting while minor arts enters

where all the gems and added form in the crown are being placed.
5. What did the artist want to show in his work? What is the
artwork for?

Every artist has its reason in every artwork that they did. Some of them maybe for

personal reasons or just a lending voice in a significant matter for the other people to

hear. Artist carries his reasons to her heart up to his mind which help him to produce

object which we call artwork. The artist wants to show in his work those reasons. For an

example, I consider myself as an artist because I paint watercolor landscapes. I want to

express my feeling through landscapes every time if I feel sad, happy, anxious and many

more. Sometimes I was able to make an image wherein that conveys to other people

especially what we are struggling right now, the coronavirus.

Apparently, those reasons have different races that us viewers could establish a

connection between the artist. It identifies his character, skills, personality, talents and

many more that help us to distinguish his very true self. The artwork for people who

vital to listen to the ideas and reason of the artist. It serves to be an eye-opener both for

the artist and people. Music and dance are for people who loves to involve with it while

other people enjoy reading novels and books. Artworks creates a form of

communication and connection that drives the people to see and feel reality or outside

of reality.
6. What is the personality or individuality of the artwork?

Artwork conveys a meaningful message to each and everyone of us. These

personalities formed artwork on how it is used before up until today. For me, I can

describe the personality of artwork in two forms. It might be in its structural form or in its

expressive form. Structural form involves on how art should be done based on its

tangible features like shapes, depth, letters, tune and melody, movements and many

more. While expressive form is in lined with intangible features like feelings, emotions,

ideas, imaginations and creativity that helps to express and communicate. These

personalities give a distinctive purpose of artwork to everyone not only for the artist.

Nevertheless, the individuality of an artwork is distinguished on how impact can

make an art to people. It might be through their emotions, feelings, opinion and beliefs.

This made the art remarkable to everyone because we cannot separate ourselves to art.

It makes us who we are today. Art is the evidence of everyone existence that’s why its

uniqueness conquers great influence and impact to our daily lives. It can be through

music or dance, novels and books, drawings and paintings or architectural designs as

long as it provides meaningful characteristics, it will always be vital to people from pre-

historic era up to 20th century.
