Purcell School Wi-Fi

You will see a Wi-Fi broadcast named ‘Purcell School’ available across much of the site.

Staff and Students can connect to this Wi-Fi with personal devices, without the need to pre-register equipment, or
needing to input any proxy settings.

The service provides filtered and time-based web browsing, based on the permissions of the user credentials entered.

2 steps to connect your device…

1. JOIN THE ‘PURCELL SCHOOL’ WI-FI BROADCAST:

• Select the ‘Purcell School’ Wi-Fi broadcast, and provide your school network username and password.
Please simply type your username, NOT your full school email address.

• If asked: - Some devices refer to username as Identity.

- Anonymous Identity should be left blank.
- EAP method is PEAP.
- Phase 2 authentication method set to Automatic or MSCHAPv2.
- Set Client Certificate or CA Certificate to Do Not Validate.

2. INSTALL THE FILTERING CERTIFICATE:

• You need to make your device ‘trust’ our Smoothwall filtering system by installing a small security
certificate. Please refer to the additional guidance pages, following the instructions that are relevant
for your particular device(s).

If you skip this step, a large number of websites and services WILL NOT WORK properly.

Install the filtering certificate on…
Apple iOS (iPhone / iPad etc)

• Open Safari, and go to this address/URL: 192.168.8.1/swca.crt

• A download popup will appear, tap Allow:

• Now go to Settings and tap on

• An Install Profile window will appear…

• Tap Install.

• Tap Install twice more…

( you may need to input your security PIN /
Touch ID )

• Back in Settings…

• Tap General…
• Tap About…
• Tap Certificate Trust Settings...

• Tap the slider next to ‘Smoothwall root

CA 2020’ . The slider will move to the right
and enable the certificate:

• Restart your device to complete installation.

Install the filtering certificate on…
Microsoft Windows 7 / 10

• Open any browser and go to this address/URL: 192.168.8.1/swca.crt

• A file called swca.crt will download…

• Open the swca.crt file, either from the ‘download complete’ prompt in your browser, or by double-
clicking it from your download location.

• An ‘Open File’ warning window will appear…

• Click Open.

• Then click on Install Certificate.

• Select Local Machine…

• Click Next:

• In the next window, click Browse.

• Click Trusted Root Certification Authorities.
• Click Open.
• Click Next.

• Click Finish to close the ‘Completing the Certificate

Import Wizard’.

Install the filtering certificate on…
Apple macOS (MacBook / iMac etc)

• Open Safari, and go to this address/URL: 192.168.8.1/swca.crt

• A download popup will appear, click Allow:

• Open the downloaded swca.crt file from your Downloads folder.

• In the Add Certificate window, make sure to

select System from the Keychain drop-down list.

• Click Add, then enter your password or Touch ID.

• Open Keychain Access (use Finder if needed).

• Within Keychain Access, click System:

• In the certificate list on the right, find

‘Smoothwall Root CA 2020’ and double-click it.

• In the next window, click the little arrow next to Trust.

• From the ‘When using this certificate’ drop-down

menu, select Always Trust.

• Close the ‘Smoothwall root CA 2020’ window, and

enter your password or Touch ID to finish.

Install the filtering certificate on…
Android (earlier versions)

• When first connecting to Wi-Fi on Android devices, you may

see a ‘limited connectivity’ notification… If it appears,
tap the notification.

• On the next popup, tick Don’t ask again for this network.

• Tap Yes.

• Open Chrome, and go to this address/URL: 192.168.8.1/swca.crt

• Tap JUST ONCE on the ‘Open with Certificate

Installer’ popup:

• A ‘Name the certificate’ popup will appear…

• Type an appropriate name for the certificate,

for example: Purcell

• From the Credential Use drop-down list,

make sure VPN and apps is selected.

• Tap OK.

• Restart your device to complete installation.

Install the filtering certificate on…
Android (later versions)

• When first connecting to Wi-Fi on Android devices, you may

see a ‘limited connectivity’ notification… If it appears,
tap the notification.

• On the next popup, tick Don’t ask again for this network.

• Tap Yes.

• Open Chrome, and go to this address/URL: 192.168.8.1/swca.crt

• Tap Close on the install popup that appears:

• Go to Settings…

• Tap Security.

• Tap Advanced.

• Tap Encryption and credentials.

• Tap Install a certificate.

• Tap CA Certificate.

• A warning screen may appear… Tap Install Anyway.

• Tap on swca.crt from your ‘recent files’ list.

• Restart your device to complete installation.
