COMPETITION
UK FILM FESTIVAL LONDON

Information about the festival:

The UK Film Festival, founded in 2011, is a film festival held annually in Soho, London, in
November of each year. The festival aims to discover new filmmakers but always mixes
established filmmakers into their screening programmes. UKFF aim to celebrate the cultural
diversity of films made in the UK and welcome films from all over the World. Within 5 years
UKFF has established a tradition of promoting films that later have gone onto to be Oscar
nominees and winners.

I am planning on entering Best Student Film. Since I have only had the last two years of
experience, I think that it would be more helpful for me to enter the student film category,
because in the Best British Short Film category, there will be filmmakers with years of
experience, which will put me at a disadvantage of winning.

Rules of Festival:
- All submitted films (except Features) must have been completed after 1 January 2017.
- The student concession fee is only applicable to filmmakers that were full time students at
the time of making the film.
- All films in a language other than English must be subtitled in English.
- Exploitation or grossly indecent genres are not eligible.

Terms and conditions:

The UK Film Festival is hereby granted the right to utilise an excerpt from any film submitted and
accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes. The individual or corporation
submitting the film hereby warrants that it is authorised to commit the film for screening and
understands and accepts these requirements and regulations. The undersigned shall indemnify and
hold harmless UK Film Festival from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and
expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by
reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or
damage to the screening videos entered. The admission fees are non-refundable.

Why you feel you could win this competition?

I do not believe that I will win, due to only having two years of experience, however, I think I
have learnt a lot over the past two years and my skills have improved and developed greatly.
I think this is a good opportunity to use all the skills I have learnt and create something to
the best of my ability and get a professional opinion on my work.

OUTLINE OF IDEA
I am planning to make a short film about a lonely ghost and his wife who is alive. The short
film follows the wife after her husband has died and her trying to cope without him.
However, she realises that she cannot live without him, so she kills herself to join him in the
afterlife. The couple now spend the rest of their days looking for each other in the afterlife.
I would like to follow the wife as she tries to deal with the loss of her husband right after his
death and follow her storyline and what leads to her killing herself. I will then cut to shots of
the husband trailing around in life, observing people, just in the corner, whilst living people
carry out their lives. We then cut back to the wife, and her decline continues.
After she has killed herself, she looks around for her husband, thinking that he would be
confined to their house in death. She starts looking around outside, and then starts looking in
different towns.
They both wander, until they meet in a field and start walking towards each other. Final shot
of them walking towards each other.

- There will be no reference to drugs, no swearing, and no nudity within your
productions.
- All practical work must be your own only 10% of your production can be found
footage (downloaded) and only if you are producing a factual programme.
- No footage or written work from previous units may be used or resubmitted for your
final project.
- All written work must be your own and any sourced work must be Harvard
referenced properly.
- The work submitted must follow the brief created at the beginning of your Final
project.

Your Target Audience

My piece is not specifically aimed at any group of people, but I think it will mainly impact
those who have been through a similar experience of my character, where they have lost
someone who they loved and had to deal with the loss. So, in this sense, it might be targeted
to an older audience, however, there is no gatekeeping to who can be influenced by a short
film.

From the response that I got from my primary research, a lot of my friends who are around
my age really enjoyed my small piece, so I think my production has the opportunity to have a
broad target audience.
