INTRODUCTION
1
The instructions and warnings given in this handbook
illustrate the fundamental safety principles for operat-
ing construction site dumpers.
They do not illustrate all the potential hazards which
may arise.
Operators must be aware of all the procedures de-
scribed in this handbook. The procedures advise
against adopting work methods which could cause in-
juries and/or affect integrity of the vehicle.
The procedures are not comprehensive. The Manufac-
turer cannot account for all the possible methods of use
156NS01
and operation, nor evaluate all the possible conse-
quences.
Consequently, operators must be responsible and
careful at all times, to prevent hazardous situations for
themselves and others.
Use of the vehicle is subjected to respecting the specifi-
cations contained in this manual and safety regulations
set forth by the law in the country where the vehicle is
used. Knowledge of local legislation is mandatory for all
vehicle users.
Read this manual carefully. Contact an expert or call the
Manufacturer if in doubt.
For the personnel and vehicle safety, read carefully the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS contained in this handbook
4 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ADT 40

and the materials used.
Keep unauthorised persons away from the vehicle, the
equipment and the materials used. 156NS02
The vehicle can only be driven by qualified personnel,
who is authorised to do so by the legislation in force.
Drivers must be physically and psychologically fit (not 2
tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, etc.).
Furthermore, drivers must be familiar with the position
and operation of all controls, instruments, gauges and
warning lights in the vehicle. The driver must also be
able to evaluate, in principle, failures which may occur
and adopt the required precautions.
Do not allow unqualified or unsuitable personnel to use
the vehicle.
Maintenance and repair operations must be carried out
by qualified personnel, who are familiar with the ar-
rangement and operation of assemblies and workshop 156NS03
tools.

PREVENTING FIRES
1
Keep a suitably sized fire extinguisher in the vehicle.
Check it regularly (Fig. 1).
The portable fire extinguisher can only be used by
skilled personnel.
Vehicle personnel must be familiar with the basic tech-
niques for dealing with fire.
Fuel and most lubricants and fluids are flammable (Fig.
2).
Do not smoke while refuelling or topping up fluids. Do
not refuel or top up near naked flames. Do not handle
fuel (Fig. 3).
174NS09
Stop the engine before refuelling. Do not refuel in
closed places.
Check for leakage or residues of fuel, lubricants and 2
fluids which could cause minor fires before starting the
engine.
Short circuits can cause fires (Fig. 4).
Regularly check conditions of battery terminals, wires
and electrical devices.
Do not store flammable substances in places which are
not suitable for the purpose. Do not pierce or burn pres-
surised container or cylinders. Do not pile up materials
soaked in flammable substances.
Be careful where you leave rags and/or replaced mate-
rials which may contain flammable residues. 156NS05

ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS
1
Prevention
Always check height and width during the various load-
ing/unloading operations. Make sure they fall within the
specified limits (Fig. 1).
Keep the wheels perpendicular to the slope when driv-
ing up or down a gradient.
Do not make a U ---turn on a gradient to prevent rolling
over.
Respect the transverse gradient permitted for the
loaded and empty vehicle. 156NS19
Respect the maximum possible gradient for the loaded
and empty vehicle (Fig. 2).
Make sure you always have a hammer in the cab to 2
smash the windows if an accident occurs.

Replacing a wheel
The wheel replacement operation requires the utmost
care. The operation must be carried out by at least two
experts, using a hoist or a crane to handle the wheel.
Stop the possibly empty vehicle in a flat area, apply the
parking brake and remove the key from the panel.
Make sure that the ground is adequately firm for the
load to be supported. If in doubt, use plates and plat-
forms to prevent sinking.
Only use the lifting points shown.
Make sure that the lifting device is suitable to carry out
the operations and respect safety requirements.
Keep away from tyres and/or brakes that show signs of
overheating. Wait for the temperature of the compo-
nents to drop.
Deflate the tyre completely, if it is not already flat.
Do not use wheels or fasteners other that those origi-
nally provided.
Excessive tightening may be dangerous: Do not use
tubes or extensions other than those provided to tight-
en the wheel nuts.
Check that the wheel nuts are tight after two or three
hours of vehicle operation.
Check wheel nut tightness regularly.

ing the brake pedal with the gearshift lever
in Forward/Reverse Handles to the pres-
ence of the converter. 2
Avoid however to maintain a long time this
position since it may cause transmission
overheating.
Parking
Observe the following precautions for parking the ve-
hicle for a long time:
D park the vehicle as far as possible on flat ground, in 269NU433
a suitable area where it is not a hindrance;
D apply the parking brake, stop the engine and re-
move the key from the ignition switch;
D fill the fuel tank to prevent the formation of con-
dense;
D inspect the vehicle to check for damage or evident
leaks.

Normal running
Check the following parameters with the instrument
(Fig. 1) while travelling:
1. alternator warning light must be off;
2. alarm warning lights must be off.
3. liquid cooler temperature must be in specified ran-
ge in normal working conditions: 269NU3A2
80<T<100 [˚C] (176<T<212 [˚F])
Stop the vehicle, stop the engine and identi-
fy the cause of the problem if the tempera-
ture is too high (the alarm warning light is
on).
4. automatic transmission oil temperature: must be
in specified range in normal working conditions:
80 < T < 100 [˚C] (176 < T <212 [˚F])

ADT 40 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE 71
Loading
The most common methods of loading are with hydrau-
lic excavators and front end loaders.
The vehicle can be loaded equally well from the rear or
side. The truck driver must facilitate loading operations
for maximum material movement. The shorter the dis-
tance the loading unit bucket must travel, the more
passes it can make in a given period and the quicker
the truck will be loaded.
Waiting vehicles should stay about two vehicle lengths
behind the vehicle being loaded to avoid any spillage
from the loader bucket or truck.
On some jobs, the loader may work more efficiently
when trucks are positioned on both sides. Thus, while
one vehicle is being loaded, the other vehicle can move
into position on the opposite side. Since the vehicle is
usually backed into the loading position with this meth-
od, the operator must be alert and careful while back-
ing, especially when not assisted from the ground.
Keep the vehicle braked by selecting Neutral or apply-
ing the tipping parking brake during loading opera-
tions.
Where possible, the vehicle should be positioned
downwind of the loader especially when dusty material
is being loaded and/or on a windy day.
A cleanup dozer or small loader is often worked in con-
junction with the main loader to keep the area clear of
bucket spillage. The truck driver must always be alert
to the position of these machines to prevent accidents
and congestion.
The following precautions should be observed when
approaching the loading area:
D Avoid rocks and other spillage which can damage
the vehicle and particularly the tyres.
D Allow the cleanup machine sufficient time to clear
up such debris.
D Do not approach the loader when the shovel bucket
is swinging overhead to avoid being hit by falling
material.
For the personnel and vehicle safety, read carefully the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS contained in this handbook
72 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE ADT 40
Hauling
When travelling on the haul road, keep a safe speed for
the haul road conditions and gradients.
Adjust your speed also to the load you are hauling if
road conditions are good. Braking distance is longer
and steering reaction slower when the vehicle is fully
loaded.
While travelling, consider that the front and rear end of
the vehicle pivot both on the vertical and on the horizon-
tal axes: this will reduce the driver’s perception of the
behaviour of the rear end of the vehicle.
The specific features of the chassis and of
the steering tend to cause understeering
when cornering at medium---to---high speed
(i.e. the front of the vehicle tends to go
straight).
This is particularly the case on slippery ter-
rain and/or when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Especially at full load, due to the high centre
of gravity, may roll over if driven abruptly or
at excessive speed in relation to operative
conditions.
Driving uphill
Check the traction capacity according to load, gradient
and road surface before facing a steep hill.
Set automatic transmission POWER PROGRAM mode
on the display.
The automatic transmission may keep shifting down
and up when travelling uphill (”gear hunting”).
In this case, it is advisable to manually select the lower
gear and reduce speed. Select the most suitable ratio
to avoid converter slipping.

Dumping
The dumping operation usually depends on the type of
material being hauled.
Overburden and waste material is dumped or piled up
in reverse.
In this case, the operation should be controlled and di- 269NU472
rected by personnel on the ground.
While backing to dump, the vehicle driver must watch
the person on the ground and respect indications while
remaining seated.
When dumping into a hopper, avoid knocking into the
protective rail with the tyres or scraping them against
the guides.
When dumping material over a spoil bank, the driver
must know how close the vehicle can approach the
edge under all weather conditions.
Before dumping, make sure that the wheels are sup-
ported by compact, flat ground.
Empty return
The precautions illustrated for hauling refer also in this
case.
Specifically, the fact that the vehicle is lighter does not
authorise you to handle it carelessly. Keep speed down
and avoid sudden manoeuvres.
Set automatic transmission ECO PROGRAM mode on
the display.
For the personnel and vehicle safety, read carefully the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS contained in this handbook
