New and Changed Features
Spotlight — Spotlight is a full-text and metadata search engine, which can search
everything from Word documents to iCal calendars to Address Book cards, as well as any
text within PDF files. The feature is also used to build the concept of smart folders into
the Finder. Spotlight will index files as they are saved, so they can be quickly and easily
found through a search-as-you-type box in the menu bar. As a side-effect, it adds hidden
folders and indexing files to removable media like USB flash drives.
iChat AV — The new iChat AV 3.0 in Tiger supports up to four participants in a video
conference and ten participants in an audio conference. It also now supports
communication using the XMPP protocol. A XMPP server called iChat Server is
included on Mac OS X Tiger Server.
Safari RSS — The new Safari 2.0 web browser in Tiger features a built-in reader for
RSS and Atom web syndication that can be accessed easily from an RSS button in the
address bar of the web browser window. An updated version of Safari, included as part of
the free Mac OS X v10.4.3 update, can also pass the Acid2 web standards test.
Mail 2 — The new version of Mail.app email client included in Tiger featured an
updated interface, "Smart Mailboxes" which utilize the Spotlight search system, parental
controls, as well as several other features.
The Dashboard allows for miniature applications called "Widgets" to appear and disappear
rapidly from the screen.
IRIX
OS family Unix
License Proprietary
IRIX is a computer operating system developed by Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) to run natively
on their 32- and 64-bit MIPS architecture workstations and servers. It is based on UNIX System
V with BSD extensions. IRIX is the origin of the XFS file system.
The current major version of IRIX is IRIX 6.5 which was released in May 1998. New minor
versions of IRIX 6.5 were released every quarter until 2005; since then there have been four
further minor releases. Through version 6.5.22, there were two branches of each release: a
maintenance release (identified by an m suffix to the version number) that included only fixes to
the original IRIX 6.5 code, and a feature release (with an f suffix) that included improvements
and enhancements. An overlay upgrade from 6.5.x to the 6.5.22 maintenance release is available
as a free download, whereas versions 6.5.23 and higher require an active Silicon Graphics
support contract, despite only running on Silicon Graphics hardware.
IRIX 6 is compliant with UNIX System V Release 4, UNIX 95 and POSIX (including 1e/2c
draft 15 ACLs and Capabilities).
IRIX has strong support for real-time disk and graphics I/O. IRIX was one of the first Unix
versions to feature a graphical user interface for the main desktop environment. IRIX was widely
used in the computer animation industry and for scientific visualization due to its once-large
application base.
IRIX was a leader in Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP), scalable from 1 to greater than 1024
processors with a single system image.
IRIX uses the Indigo Magic Desktop, which by default uses the 4Dwm X window manager with
a custom look designed using the Motif widget toolkit.
IRIX uses the MIPSPro 7.4 Compiler for both its front end and back end. The compiler was
designed to support parallel POSIX programming in C/C++, Fortran 77/90, and Ada. The
Workshop GUI IDE was used for development. Other tools include Speedshop for performance
tuning, and Performance Co-Pilot.
IRIX also supported OpenGL for graphics chips and Image processing libraries.
