CASE STUDY DESCRIPTION

For each of the case study, develop an information system (E-Commerce) that can receive
inputs from user, process the data and produce output and feedback. You may use your own
creativity and appropriate assumptions in the development process.
The report should include the description about the system and answers all the questions
given.

Case study 1

Your team would like to set up a Web site to sell towels, linens, pottery, and tableware from
Ayer Hitam Pottery and Houseware. You need to do analysis for preparing the services for
hosting small business Internet storefronts. The Web site should be able to take secure credit
card payments and to calculate shipping costs and GSTs. Initially, the website would display
photos and descriptions of 30 different products.
• Visit e-commerce hosting services and study what they offer to small businesses, their
capabilities, and costs. Also examine the tools they provide for creating an e-commerce
site.
• Compare at least THREE services and decide which you would use if you were
establishing a Web store.
• Write a brief report indicating your choice and explaining the strengths and weaknesses
of each.
• Develop an e-commerce website for the company to sell the products.

Case study 2

Your company manufactures and sells batik products and would like to start selling outside the
Malaysia. You team is in charge of developing a global Web strategy and development.
• Which of these countries would you target first? What criteria would you use?
• What other considerations should you address in your Web strategy?
• What features would you put on your Web site to attract buyers from the countries you
target?
• Develop an e-commerce website for the company to sell 30 batik’s products.

Case study 3

Tukul’s Hardware is a small family business in Batu Pahat, Johor. The owners, Lim and Sally,
must use every square foot of store space as profitably as possible. They have never kept
detailed inventory or sales records. As soon as a shipment of goods arrives, the items are
immediately placed on store shelves. Invoices from suppliers are only kept for tax purposes.
When an item is sold, the item number and price are rung up at the cash register. The owners
use their own judgment in identifying items that need to be reordered.
• What is the business impact of this situation?
• How could information systems help Lim and Sally run their business?
• What data should these systems capture?
• What decisions could the systems improve?
• Develop an appropriate MIS for the company that sells 30 types of products.
