ANALYSIS BEHAVIOR OF SYSTEM VERTICAL BAUPANEL, AS SIDING SUBJECTED TO

WIND LOAD

INTRODUCTION

Baupanel system represents a very cost effective alternative applied to exterior walls of buildings,
whether built with integrated system or as a supplement to an existing structure of reinforced
concrete or other material such as rolled steel.

Its main advantages are:

- Lightweight: Because it has a weight of about 200 Kp/m2 in gray work (panel with shotcrete
applied), compared to approximately 280 Kp/m2 weighing a traditional nasturtium wall.

-Space Saving: With an enclosure formed with a panel BPC-100, which has a thick gray work
completed in approximately 17.5 cm, we are saving about 7.5 cm in front of an enclosure to the
nasturtium with 25 cm thick , which translates to an increase in building floor space.

-Better thermal performance: It has a lot thermal resistance more than traditional enclosures,
which translates into significant energy savings.

-High resistance to wind solicitations: A Baupanel enclosure is considered as top slab

subjected to surface wind stress, with two fully interconnected layers of concrete and offering a
great inertia in the section deal with this type of solicitation. In a traditional brick of multi cladding
layers, which have unconnected between them with a limited resistance to the wind.

BAUPANEL BUILDING SYSTEM. BASIC FEATURES

Baupanel construction system represents a breakthrough in the world of semi-

prefabricated building elements.

It is based on the use of panels with expanded polystyrene core density Kp/m3 15, confined
between double galvanized steel mesh of 600 N/mm2 strength, jointed with galvanized steel
connectors, at 80 per m2 panel.

The special design of polystyrene core with waveform, favours the adherence of micro-
concrete structure of 25 N/mm2 which is projected at a rate of 3 cm. per side at least, pose after
their set, a structural part of high compressive strength when used as a bearing wall.

The polystyrene core, besides acting as a support for the structural concrete provides
thermal and acoustic insulation to the building, providing inertia to the two layers of structural
concrete work jointed because of the presence of connectors between the galvanized mesh,
which allow adhesion of concrete, at the same time preventing their shrinkage cracking. This type
of panel is called BPN (normal simple Panel).

As required by the basic rule EHE-08, a panel has been designed to complement as described
above with the addition of corrugated armor 5 mm diameter steel B-500S, of the reason of 5
units per lineal meter of panel. This feature is essential to the use of Baupanel panel as a
structural element in Spain since the EHE-08 requires the use of corrugated steel in reinforced
concrete structural elements.
The panel with corrugated steel reinforcements called BPR (Panel simple reinforced).

In other countries, where it is not necessary the

use of corrugated armor is used as a supporting
element type panel BPN, fulfilling perfectly the
mesh galvanized steel calculation solicitations. In
Spain we use the BPN panel walls and non-load-
bearing elements in general, and BPR panel for
load-bearing, complying with the EHE-08.

The panels overlap one another by extending the

galvanized mesh shall be tied with wire at various
points along its height

connectors and the design of polystyrene core as a waveform.

Baupanel system has granted DIT (Technical Approval) issued by the Eduardo Torroja
Institute. This document supports the use of the system as a structural element in Spain and
certifies that it is compatible with the basic rules of concrete structures, EHE-08.

This document gives a detailed technical description of the panels that make up the
system, providing guidelines for calculating and certifying that the system has successfully
passed several tests to support its use as a structural element in our country.

ANALYSIS OF THE RESISTANCE TO OVERLOAD OF WIND FOR WALLS EXECUTED WITH

BAUPANEL SYSTEM

Then we will analyze the behavior before wind overloads the system enclosures
executed by Baupanel System .

Wind loads, we are going to calculate as CTE DB-AE, calculating even in an extreme
case of a panel subjected to hurricane wind speed 180 km / h, focusing on the enclosure.

Let's do the calculations, assimilating the enclosure in a forged vain subjected to the own
enclosure’s weight, plus an overlay of the 1.5 cm of cement mortar and a superficial wind load
uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the vain.

Consider, for example, a building of 12 storeys high, located near the sea, so we have an
environment IIIa according to EHE-08, having to apply a coating on the exterior frame of 4.5 cm,
which resulting in an average thickness of 5 cm micro-concrete on the outside. On the inside is a
layer of micro-concrete of 3.5 cm (3 cm indoor coating as type I). The height between floors is 3
meters and the closings are considered at bi-articulated its junction with the floor slabs.

We will analyze a series of cases with different overloads of wind where we compare the
maximum moment in the centre of the vain with the moment resistance of each type of panel,
which increases with the same section. If the vain moment exceeds the resistance moment of
the panel it will to increase the wall with supplementary armor or to resort to an panel thicker

CALCULATION OF WIND LOAD

Calculate the most unfavourable wind load for the building (on the upper floors), as the CTE in
force in Spain, specifically under DB-AE (Action in the Building).

The expression of the wind load is:

q e = q b *c e *c p

Where:

Qe = Wind dynamic pressure.

We use the expression of the repealed NBE AE-88 to be more comfortable and be on the side of
v2
safety: w = Where will the wind pressure on the enclosure in terms of its speed.
16

Ce = Exposure of coefficient

Assuming that the building is in urban area (IV), values associated with the degree of roughness
are (according to Annex D.2 DB-AE):

ZONA URBANA (TIPO IV)

K L (m) Z (m)
0,22 0,30 5,00

An 12-story building has an elevation of Z = 36 meters, considering that each floor is 3 meters
high

⎛Z⎞ ⎛ 36 ⎞
F = K * Ln⎜ ⎟ = 0,22 * Ln⎜ ⎟ = 1,0532 (Selecting the largest of the 2 values of Z).
⎝L⎠ ⎝ 0,30 ⎠
C e = F ( F + 7 K ) = 1,0532 * (1,0532 + (7 * 0,22)) = 2,7311 (Value of Coefficient Ce).

Cp = External pressure coefficient

For a plane parameter we take the value Cp = 1 which is more desfavorable

⎛ v2 ⎞
Therefore, the expression of the wind load is: qe = ⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ * 2,73
⎝ 16 ⎠

EXAMPLE FOR NORMAL CASE IN SPAIN.

Let us choose any town of the region C as CTE DB-AE, which is equivalent to a basic wind speed of 29 m / s =
104.40 km / h. These are the most unfavorable conditions of Spanish rule.
⎛ v2 ⎞ ⎛ 29 2 ⎞
Subtituting: q e = ⎜
⎜ 16 ⎟⎟ * 2,73 = ⎜⎜ 16 ⎟⎟ * 2,73 = 143,49 Kp / m ,which is the wind overload applied to a

Here is another example of the same case with panel TP-120 and a vertical reinforcement consisting Ø8
every 66 cm. It has the advantage of reducing the section of floor space and win panel, but the disadvantage
of requiring labor to place the reinforcements. Large pieces of façade is more advisable to adopt a panel
section that does not require reinforcement.

CONCLUSIONS

Use of the system Baupanel as an closure element Façades is perfectly viable under conditions
that provide the Spanish rules mandatory, with the minimum thickness used for exterior panel
(BP-100).

This example was made for a building taller than the average if we applied a residential use (12
plants) and plant height of 3 m and should be studied separately in cases that have heights
greater than that provided in this case.

We see that the panel perfectly resists hurricane winds analyzed, admissible deformations and
can decide at the planning stage the thickness of the panels and make a choice taking into
account the possibility of placing additional reinforcements or to use panels of larger section.
