CAS-No.: 7646-85 -7
EINECS: 231 -592 -0
1.2 Relevant identified uses of the substance or mixture and uses advised against
1.2.1 Identified uses:
The antiseptic nature of zinc chloride has found its use in antiseptic, astringent and in treating ulcers and
pododermatitis. It is also used in preserving anatomical specimens, wood preservatives, deodorant,
disinfecting and embalming materials. The chloride is used as fluxes on copper alloys and, with hydrochloric
acid added, for stainless steels. It is also used as a mordant in printing and dyeing textiles and in the
vulcanizing processes of fiber and rubber. It is used as an electrolyte in dry cell batteries, and in metal
industry, in galvanizing iron and as an electrolyte for electroplating.
In chemical synthesis, the anhydrous zinc chloride is used as a dehydrating agent. And as a standard
saturated solution, it is used for calibration of the electro hygrometer in oil industry.

8.2 Exposure controls

8.2.1 Appropriate engineering controls
Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wearing of closed work clothing is
required additionally to the stated personal protection equipment.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures
below the Airborne Exposure Limits. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control
the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area. Please
refer to the ACGIH document, Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent
edition, for details. Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment
8.2.2 Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment:
Eye/face protection
Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible.
Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Hand protection:
Suitable are protective gloves with the following specification. The recommendation is valid for laboratory
conditions, specific workplace conditions must be taken into consideration separately.
Hand protection Material: Nitrile rubber
Break through time: > 480 min

Respiratory protection
If the exposure limit is exceeded, a full face piece respirator with dust/mist filter may be worn up to 50 times
the exposure limit or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency or
respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not
known, use a full-face piece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air purifying respirators do
not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Body protection:
Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or coveralls, as appropriate, to
prevent skin contact.
Thermal hazards
Wear suitable protective clothing to prevent heat.
Environmental exposure controls
Avoid discharge into the environment. According to local regulations, Federal and official regulations

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

11.1 Information on toxicological effects
Non-human toxikological data:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): other:
In conclusion, zinc was mainly accumulated in small intestine, liver, kidneys and large intestine after single
oral administration of zinc chloride to male Wistar rats.
A study was conducted to determine the distribution of zinc to different organs after oral administration of
zinc chloride in rats.
30 male Wistar rats were intubated with 0.1 μCi (3.7 kBq) 65Zn as zinc chloride. Animals were sacrificed after
6 and 24 h and after 2, 4, 7, 14 d of administration and various organs viz. stomach, small intestine, large
intestine without its contents, liver, kidneys, spleen, testicle, prostate, brain, blood, heart, thigh muscles and
hairs were analysed for zinc concentration.
Zinc was accumulated in the highest amount within the small intestine, liver, kidneys and large intestine and
in smaller amounts in lungs and spleen. The smallest amounts were found at nearly same level in brain,
prostate, heart, blood, skin, hairs and gonads.
In conclusion, zinc was mainly accumulated in small intestine, liver, kidneys and large intestine after single
oral administration of zinc chloride.
