British Literature – Romanticism and the Victorian Age

Assignment 1 (4p)
Select a word unfamiliar to you from a novel/ poem you have studied. Look up the word in the
dictionary; provide the dictionary definition and then quote the passage in which the word
appears (in the novel/ poem). Explain briefly how the word is used in the text by the Romantic/
Victorian author.

Assignment 2 (5p)
Provide a one-page (typed, double-spaced) response to any of the poems/ novels you have read
this semester in the British Literature class. Focus on one theme only: Romantic imagination/
industrialization/ reform/ social classes/ religious doubt/ imperial expansion/ Englishness and
Otherness/ the woman question/ education/ childhood/ the city and the country.

You are not allowed to use sources without acknowledgment! Originality of responses is
strongly encouraged!
