Directions: Solve the following problems.
1. STEP 1: Some of the vases contain 9 roses and the other vases contain 8 orchids. If Maria has
5 vases of flowers and it consist of 42 flowers in vases in total. How many vases of each type of
flower does Maria have?
STEP 2: I know that there are 9 roses and 8 orchids in some of the vases, and there are 5 vases
consists of 42 flowers.
STEP 3:

1(9) + 4(8) = n
1 1 vase 4 vases 9 + 32 = 41

3(9) + 2(8) = n
2 3 vases 2 vases 27 + 16= 43

Therefore, Maria have 2 vases of roses and 3 vases of orchids.

CHECK:
No. of Vases (No. of Roses) + No. of Vases (No. of Orchids) = Total number of flowers (n)
2(9) + 3(8) = n
18 + 24= 42

2. STEP 1: Yassi bought 7 flower pots, which will hold a total of 53 liters of dirt. If the clay lower
pots which holds 9 liters of dirt and ceramic pots which holds 4 liters. How many of each type of
flower pot did she buy?
STEP 2: I know that there 7 pots that holds a total of 53 liters of dirt, and clay pots that holds 9
liters of dirt and ceramic pots which hold 4 liters of dirt.

CHECK:
Number of pots (9 liters) + number of pots (4 liters) = total number of dirt in liter
5(9) + 2(4) = L
45 + 8= 53

3. STEP 1: A fanner has some ducks and some horses. Altogether the ducks and horses have 40
legs and 14 heads. How many ducks and horses are there on the fan?
STEP 2: I know that there are 40 legs and 14 heads of both horses and ducks altogether in the
farm, knowing that horses have 4 legs and ducks have 2 legs.
STEP 3:

16 + 24 = 40

4. STEP 1: A team from the high school went on a science-and-math quiz show. The science
questions were worth 10 points and the math questions were worth 9 points. The team
answered a total of 7 questions and earned 66 points. How many questions did the team
answer in each category?
STEP 2: I know that there are worth 10 points of science question and worth 9 points of
mathematics questions, and the teams answered 7 questions and earned 66 points.

5. STEP 1: A manager bought lunch for her co-worker. Each person picked either a salad or a
burger. The salad cost P15.00 each and the burger cost P21.00 each, if the manager spent
PI32.00 and bought lunch for 8 people. How many of each item did she buy?

STEP 2: I know that the salad cost P15.00 each and the burger cost P21.00 each and the
manager spent P132 for 8 people.
STEP 3:

6. STEP 1: The hardware store sells white buckets, which hold 1 liter of water and indigo 8 liters.
Dan bought 4 buckets. His buckets will hold 25 liters in total. How many of each type of bucket
did Dan buy?
STEP 2: I know that white bucket holds 1 liter of water and indigo 8 liters and Dan bought 4
buckets that holds 25 liters in total.

7. STEP 1: Scarlet has 15 bags of beads. Some of the bags contain 9 purple beads and the rest
contain 6 yellow beads. If Scarlet has 120 beads in all. How many of each bags of color bead do
Scarlet have?
STEP 2: I know that Scarlet has 15 bags of beads, some of the bags contain 9 purple beads and
the rest contain 6 yellow beads and having 120 beads in all.
